Granville Co. Government’s Summer Civic Leadership Program Underway

The Granville County Board of Commissioners’ Summer Civic Leadership Program for rising Granville County high school seniors began on June 13. The program, now in its twentieth year, gives students “hands-on” experience in the operation of local government.

Interns will work for five weeks during the summer months, rotating through Granville County departments to learn more about general government, human services, public safety and community services.

After a competitive application and interview process, five students out of the fifteen who applied were selected. Interns for the summer of 2019 include Brooklyn Pridgeon of Oxford, a student at J.F. Webb High School; Anthony Goreman of Oxford, who is home-schooled; and Tanaura Harrison, Sarah Elliott and Akoya Penny-Campbell, all of Creedmoor, who are students of Granville Early College High School.

Anahi Galven of Butner, also of Granville Early College High School, was chosen as an alternate.

Upon completion of the Summer Civic Leadership Program, each participating student will receive educational assistance in the amount of $1,400.

Granville’s Lake Holt Fireworks Celebration Set for Wed., July 3

The City of Creedmoor and Town of Butner will host a spectacular fireworks display at Lake Holt, located on Old Highway 75 in Butner, NC on Wednesday, July 3, 2019. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.

Concessions offering a selection of hot dogs, bottled water, and soft drinks are available (no alcoholic beverages are permitted), and music is provided by a DJ.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and a personal-size flashlight. Due to the loud nature of fireworks, event organizers request that all pets be left at home for this event.

Parking and security are organized by officers of the Creedmoor Police Department, the Creedmoor Volunteer Fire Department, Butner Public Safety, and Granville County Sheriff’s Office.

The event is also supported with donations from the Town of Stem, City of Oxford, and Granville County.

The Granville County Board of Education will meet for a Special Work Session for the purpose of filling the District 1 Board vacancy seat, receiving updated budget information and presentations on updated school board policies, Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. at the Granville County Public Schools Central Office, 101 Delacroix Street, Oxford, North Carolina.

The board will also meet in a Closed Session for a consultation with the Board’s attorney and to discuss confidential personnel matters in accordance with N.C. General Statute 143.318.11 (a)(6), 143-318.11 (a)(3), 143.318.11 (a)(5) and Section 115C-321 on this afternoon.

Granville County JCPC Recognizes Beeler For Years of Service

The Granville County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) recently recognized outgoing Chairman Art Beeler for his years of service to the JCPC and to the youth and families of Granville County.

Beeler has served as JCPC District 5 representative for the past six years.

Vendor Applications, Sponsorships Available for Upcoming BBQ Competition

Mark your calendars and get ready for the Tri County BBQ Competition on Saturday, August 10, 2019, at the Kerr Lake Country Club, hosted by Helping All People Excel – HAPE, a 501c3.

This fun-filled, family-friendly event will feature 10 – 15 teams competing in the BBQ Competition, along with vendors, raffles and lots of fun for the residents of Vance County and surrounding areas.

Through this event, we want to help build a stronger community while also giving back to the community. Proceeds from the Tri County BBQ Competition will be used to provide college essentials to twenty-five (25) recent high school graduates from Vance County and surrounding areas.

These items will include laundry detergent, soap, toothpaste and twin extra-long sheet – items that are essential for college but in most cases not covered by financial aid or scholarships. As we all know, getting to college is a major accomplishment. We cannot allow this accomplishment to be overshadowed by the struggle of not having what’s needed to survive while living on a college campus.
