Columbine Shooting Survivor to Speak at Annual Granville Chamber Banquet

In celebration of its 78th anniversary, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce will hold its 2020 Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet on Monday, January 27, 2020, at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

The guest speaker for the occasion will be Kacey Ruegsegger Johnson, a survivor of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. Come hear her inspiring story of the devastation of Columbine and her “arduous recovery for her body and soul.”

Tickets are available for $40 per guest. Reserved seating for corporate tables of eight is available for $300, corporate tables of 10 for $380.

Nominations Requested for Granville Chamber’s 2020 John Penn Citizen Award

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Recognition Committee announces that the committee is accepting nominations for the 2020 John Penn Citizen of the Year Award.  This prestigious award, named for Granville County’s signer of the Declaration of Independence, is presented at the Chamber’s Annual Membership Banquet.

The 2020 event will be held Monday, January 27, 2020, in the Civic Center at Vance-Granville Community College.

Nomination forms may be obtained at a Chamber office or may be downloaded from the Chamber’s website, www.granville-chamber.com.

This award was designed to recognize a person(s) for outstanding service to the community. Past recipients include Dr. Joseph Colson, Mrs. Robinette Husketh, Hubert Gooch, Rev. G. C. Granville Chamber to Hold Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Thanksgiving Breakfast will be held Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at 7:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center of Oxford Baptist Church, Main Street, Oxford.

Although there is no charge to attend the breakfast, attendees are requested to bring non-perishable food donations (canned food) for Area Congregations In Ministry (ACIM).

Attendees may expect the customary Southern buffet breakfast, prepared by volunteer men at Oxford Baptist Church. No one will leave hungry as we depart to begin the Thanksgiving holiday celebration!

The School of Graphic Arts/Masonic Home for Children is continuing its tradition of providing attendees with desk calendars for 2020.

Also, the Chamber will be officially kicking off its promotion for the National SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY – SHOP LOCAL  – SHOP GRANVILLE by providing attendees with Shop Small tote bags filled with swag from Granville County small businesses. This annual event will be held on Saturday, November 30.

Bridgestone’s continued sponsorship of this annual event spans 25+ years. The November Thanksgiving breakfast began as an industry-sponsored breakfast, and Bridgestone has graciously remained the event supporter for all these years. The Chamber is grateful to Bridgestone plant manager Mark Highland and his staff for continuing their support and sponsorship.

Granville Chamber’s ‘Cluck ‘N Shuck’ Postponed Until Spring

Late last week, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Committee was notified by the event chairman of their annual Cluck ‘N Shuck event that the event caterer had contacted him regarding the very limited supply of oysters.

The recent storms in the Gulf and Atlantic have drastically limited the availability of fresh oysters. All oyster bottoms are closed in North Carolina, and all of the Gulf oysters have been drenched as a result of wind from storms. The water is too fresh, and the bottoms are closed.

Rather than move forward with an alternate menu for the Friday, October 25 Cluck ‘N Shuck event, the Chamber’s Executive Committee thought it prudent to postpone the event until spring.

The new date for Cluck ‘N Shuck is being planned for March 2020.

Ticket holders for the October 25, 2019, event may return their tickets to the 124 Hillsboro St., Oxford Chamber office for a full refund of the purchase price or they may retain and use their tickets in the spring of 2020.

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors apologizes to our ticket holders and sponsors for any inconvenience this may cause.

Late October Brings 9th Annual ‘Cluck ‘N Shuck’ Event to Granville Co.

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their ninth annual fall seafood event – “CLUCK ‘N SHUCK,” to be held Friday, October 25, 2019, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. at The Red Barn – Golf Course Road, off Lake Devin Road, in Oxford.

Caterer Leon Nixon’s dinner menu offerings include steamed oysters, fried shrimp, fried fish, fried chicken tenders, slaw, buttered potatoes, hushpuppies, tea, Pepsi-Cola products and cold beverages.

The event will be held at the venue – The Red Barn – where it has been held the past six years. This location provides an incredible setting for those desiring to eat on the decks overlooking Lake Devin. Inside seating on the ground floor of The Red Barn is also available.

Advanced ticket sales – $40 per person or two tickets for $75 – includes all-you-can-eat on the premises.

Coincidentally, this concert is leading into an exciting weekend in downtown Oxford  – the annual North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest, which will be held Saturday, September 14. Plan to spend quite a bit of time meeting, greeting, visiting, shopping, dining and lodging in Oxford.

Concession vendors Chick-fil-A of Henderson will be offering their famous chicken sandwiches and soft drinks; Williamson’s Country Store and Grill from Bullock will be offering hot dogs, fried bologna sandwiches, French fries, soft drinks, etc. There will be Coca-Cola and Long Beverage products.

The Chamber’s Alive After Five outdoor event is free to attend. Come early, bring a chair, listen to the incredible music, dance and enjoy visiting with friends. The last Alive After Five event of 2019 will be a night to remember as Jim Quick and Coastline Band takes the stage!

Granville’s New Teacher Homecoming Tailgate to be Held Tues., Aug. 13

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce and Granville Health System are sponsoring a welcome event for new teachers coming to Granville County on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, from 3 until 5 p.m. on the grounds and in the cafeteria at the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College Street, Oxford.

This event will welcome and recognize new employees to Granville County who are being employed at Falls Lake Academy, Granville County Public Schools and Oxford Preparatory School.

The Homecoming Tailgate event will provide an opportunity to meet local elected officials, as well as business owners and leaders in Granville County.

Upon arrival, new teachers will be met by Chamber of Commerce staff and volunteers and will be encouraged to take selfies of their “First Day of School” with their cellphone cameras. Cheerleaders from each of the schools have been invited to greet and welcome the new teacher arrivals to the event.

Presiding will be Tanya Evans/Duke Energy, President of the Chamber, with remarks from event sponsor Granville Health System CEO John Snow.

Guests will enjoy typical tailgate food in the cafeteria and will hear remarks from Vance-Granville Community College President, Dr. Rachel Desmarais, as well as each administrator from the three schools.

The outside grounds at the Masonic Home will have a tailgate atmosphere with tents where Chamber of Commerce member businesses have been invited to set up tables with their business information and to bring interactive games to go along with the tailgate/Homecoming theme. Sponsor Granville Health System plans to have a sports medicine tent at the event.

The Chamber is preparing new teacher gift bags, provided by GHS. Reminder: Granville’s First ‘Alive After Five’ of 2019 Set for May 23

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s 16th year of Alive After Five events will begin Thursday, May 23, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. in Oxford’s downtown parking lot at Littlejohn and Gilliam Streets.

This year’s entertainers will be a band which began in 1958, 61 years ago, the incredible Embers featuring Craig Woolard.

The Embers boast numerous albums and single releases that span decades and continue to exhibit top quality showmanship, musicianship and professionalism.  Having been inducted into the South Carolina Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame, The Embers are honored to carry the moniker of North Carolina’s Official Ambassadors of Music. They have traveled the country and the world and have performed for every event imaginable, from the highest dignitaries to the hottest back yard frat parties.

The Embers were also honored to travel throughout South Korea to perform their Christmas special “Christmas with the Embers” on American Military Bases for America’s troops in December of 2007 and 2008. They were awarded Military Coins of Excellence for their distinguished service.

The Embers are widely considered a musical marvel and have laid the groundwork for what has become known as “Beach Music” in the Carolinas, Virginias, the Gulf Coast region of North America and every beach in between. They are a true musical tradition that many Americans have listened to from childhood to adulthood. The Embers consider the genre of Beach Music as “music with a memory” and have been creating lasting memories since its inception in 1958. Simply put – Heart and Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Feel Good Music.

Today, touring is commonplace for The Embers, who regularly boast an average of 225 shows per year. They also embark on a cruise each year for their friends and fans to various locations throughout the Caribbean. And don’t miss their Christmas shows – perfect to get you in the mood for the holiday season!
