Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Town Talk 10/15/19: Youth Outreach Programs Aim to Prevent Violent Situations

Tara Goolsby, facilities supervisor, and Shantel Hargrove, youth services outreach administrator, with the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department were the guests of honor on Tuesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk.

In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, WIZS continues to feature local organizations each Tuesday for on-air discussions of this prevalent type of abuse that affects all genders, races, religions and socioeconomic classes.

This week’s segment focused on the prevention of domestic violence situations through youth outreach and how to find the best criminal lawyers in Atlanta to help you sue your offender quickly to avoid more issues.

Goolsby and Hargrove discussed the various youth services offered by the H-V Rec. Department, including Teen Court for older youth, and Project Youth Outreach for elementary and middle school children.

Teen Court is a program for first-time offenders – typically between the ages of 11-17 – run by teenagers who serve as the defense, prosecution, jury and bailiff. Licensed judges and lawyers preside over the cases.

Teens are sent to the court, with a professional criminal defense lawyer assigned to each case, for offenses such as fighting at school and will maintain a clean record if sanctions imposed by the court, such as community service, are completed.

Teen Court meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Vance County Courthouse.

Project Youth Outreach is an in-school program offered to fourth and fifth-grade students at L.B. Yancey Elementary, Carver Elementary and E.O. Young Elementary School. Services are also offered to sixth and seventh-grade students at Vance County Middle School. An eighth-grade after school program is also in the works.

Representatives meet with students once a week during their special electives time to work on areas such as self-confidence, good hygiene, bullying and character-building.

These outreach programs aim, in part, to prevent youth from becoming either a victim or a perpetrator of domestic violence.

Tri-City Seahawks to Hold Games, First Homecoming Event

Bring your friends and family out to enjoy some great football games hosted by your Tri-City Seahawks on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Vance County Middle School, 293 Warrenton Road in Henderson.

Game times: 8U – 4 p.m.; 10U – 6 p.m.; 12U – 8 p.m.

Cost is $5 for adults; $2 for school-age children. Kids under age 6 are free.

There will be a tribute to breast cancer survivors, a halftime performance by the Vance County High School Showtime Marching Machine, vendors, concessions and Tri-City Seahawks merchandise available for purchase.

T-shirts in sizes small – 3XL will be available for $10.

‘Cops on Top’ Fundraiser TOMORROW at Henderson Chick-fil-A

The annual “Cops on Top” Fundraiser, postponed from its original September date due to expected inclement weather, will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2019, from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Chick-fil-A of Henderson.

Officers and deputies from the Henderson Police Department and Vance County Sheriff’s Office will be collecting donations at the restaurant’s drive-through and side entrances. Money raised will cover the expenses Vance County athletes incur while participating in the Special Olympics.

A bouncy house and face painting will be provided by BoHo the Clown with Character Antics. Guest appearances by kid-friendly characters are also scheduled.

Vance Co. Properties Committee to Hear on Eaton Johnson Building Progress

Please be informed that Vance County’s Properties Committee (Brummitt, Taylor, Wilder) is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at 3 p.m. in the Administrative Conference Room of the Vance County Administration Building located at 122 Young Street in Henderson.

The committee will receive an update from the architects on the former Eaton Johnson Middle School’s building progress.

Registration is now underway for the Seventh Annual Tour de Vance bike ride, scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2019. The ride has been growing steadily since its inception, drawing families and first-timers in addition to the most seasoned of cyclists for four separate cycling events.

This year’s ride will help VGCC’s Endowment Fund to support scholarships for students enrolled in Health Sciences programs at the college. Programs include Associate Degree Nursing, Radiography, Practical Nursing, Histotechnology, Medical Assisting and Pharmacy Technology.

Proceeds from this year’s ride will also go to the Vance County United Way. The organization’s goal is to support the work of local public service agencies such as the Addition Recovery Center for Men, Community Partners of Hope, Smart Start, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, LifeLine Outreach and the Harold Sherman Adult Day Center.

Several different options are available for cyclists. The 9-mile “fun ride” is ideal for youth, families and beginners. A 20-mile course suits riders ready for a bit more distance. Experienced cyclists can choose a 31-mile “Forest and Farmland” circle route through the country or a 62-mile “metric century” that adds to that 31-mile circle route an out-and-back spur to the Kerr Lake area.

The rides will start and finish at VGCC’s Main Campus, located off Interstate 85 and Poplar Creek Road at 200 Community College Road in Henderson.

All riders can register through the Vance-Granville Community College website at vgcc.edu/tourdevance. Online registration will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. On-site registration will be an option at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event.

The 9-mile ride will cost $10 for each rider. The 20-mile ride will cost $20 for those who register by Sept. 9, increasing to $25 thereafter. The 31-mile and 62-mile (or “metric century”) rides will cost $30 for those who register by Sept. 9, increasing to $40 thereafter.

“Vance-Granville is honored to once again be associated with an event that has become such a success and a symbol of our college’s 50-year history of community involvement,” said Eddie Ferguson, director of the VGCC Endowment Fund. “Joining forces with the United Way means that we can make an even bigger impact, raising funds for good causes while promoting the importance of exercise and good health.”

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 19. The 62-mile ride starts at 8:30 a.m., the 31-mile ride at 9:30, the 20-mile ride at 10 a.m., and the 9-mile ride at 10:30 a.m. Law enforcement will accompany riders on the 9-mile route.

Lunch will be provided.

Youth Basketball Clinic to Focus on Gun/Gang Violence Awareness

“Soul-Out” Ministry, Henderson Optimist Club, Boyd Honda of Henderson, Alamance Academy, LLC and the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department present the 2019-2020 Basketball Season Kickoff Clinic.

The clinic will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center – 307 Carey Chapel Rd in Henderson. The clinic is designed for youth ages 6-14.

This year’s theme is “Gun and Gang Violence Awareness.”

More Than $3.4M in Grants Awarded by NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission

The N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission (NCTTFC) awarded more than $3.4 million through 22 grants fo agricultural and economic initiatives across the state. The grants place a high priority on projects that address ways to train people for new careers, stimulate the agricultural economy and help farmers with innovative ideas.

“Our Commission is dedicated to funding projects that will benefit farmers and their communities across the state,” said Bill Teague, Chairman of the NCTTFC. “In 2019 we were able to fund a diverse array of projects that will benefit a wide section of North Carolina agriculture.”

The $3.4 million supports projects that assist farmers with facility enhancements, research and educational opportunities. These projects assist with innovative on-farm projects, increase leadership skills and offer operational strategies that will help farmers increase farm income.

One project is with the N. C. Agricultural Foundation to study insect and mite management in hemp. Another project partners with the N.C. Agromedicine Institute to educate producers about managing their response to farm stress.

In addition to the grants awarded, the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission renewed its partnerships with the AgPrime and AgVentures to provide small grants directly to on-farm projects that support increasing farm profitability.

The N.C. General Assembly created the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission in 2000 to lessen the financial impact to farmers and tobacco-related businesses caused by the sharp decline of tobacco in the agricultural economy.

The commission’s original funding was established through tobacco industry annual payments as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement. Its current funding comes from a set appropriation of funds. Since 2002, the NCTTF has awarded more than 360 grants to public and nonprofit agencies that meet the goals of strengthening the rural and tobacco-dependent economies of North Carolina.

H-V Chamber, IOPL to Sponsor Televised Hometown Healthcare Debate

The North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership and the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce will host a “Hometown Debate” at Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center on Thursday, October 17, 2019, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Henderson is one of four cities selected as host communities for this televised state-wide event. The debate in Henderson will focus on issues in the delivery of medical services. The debate is free to the public.

Spectrum News Channel will be filming and Loretta Boniti will moderate the debate.

Scheduled panelists are State Representative Maryann Black (D-Durham), State Representative Donna McDowell White (R- Johnston), Henderson resident Greg Griggs of the NC Academy of Family Physicians and Jordan Roberts from the John Locke Foundation.

Spectrum News will feature the debate in its entirety on www.spectrumlocalnews.com . An abbreviated version will also air on In Focus, on Sunday, October 20 at both 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

IOPL is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate future political and community leaders in modern campaign strategy, ethical decision making, and governance, such that its participants will have a sound grounding in ethical behavior, consensus building, and cooperative and collaborative leadership.

This event is especially important to area business leaders, human resource directors, medical professionals and individuals concerned about the future of medical care.

Vance County Schools to Hold District Parent Night

Vance County Schools will be planning monthly Parent Sessions to help families learn about how they can help their children in school, find helpful resources in our county and help parents with everyday family responsibilities.

On October 17, we will be having our first Parent and Family Night at LB Yancey Elementary School from 5:30 – 7 p.m. There will be a light snack for those who attend.

There will be two topics discussed. “We are in School, Now What?” will be geared towards Pre-K and Kindergarten parents, with a focus on student experiences, academic growth and expectations.

The second topic is “Developing Good Homework and Study Habits,” geared towards parents with students of all ages, allowing them to learn tips on good study habits and organizational skills to share with their children.
