H-V Chamber to hold Ribbon Cutting for Schewels Furniture

A little history

When Elias Schewel, a Russian immigrant, began peddling household goods in a horse and buggy in 1897, he could hardly have imagined that his fledgling enterprise would have grown to 52 stores in three states.  Today the company he founded is owned and operated by his fourth generation descendants, Marc Schewel and Jack Schewel.

Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce looking for Leadership Vance Candidates

Do you have a passion for leadership and a desire to be part of something bigger where you live or work? If so, then Leadership Vance might just be what you’re looking for right now.

“We are currently seeking 15 to 20 individuals for the 2017 class,” said Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Membership Director & LV Program Director Annette Roberson. “Each class is comprised of individuals who live, work or have an interest in the Henderson/Vance County community.”

This renowned program, created in the 1980’s is a program of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce. The program runs from February to July with ten class sessions plus a Community Services project and Graduation dinner.

It is designed to provide a behind-the-scenes view of the processes, programs, opportunities and challenges that impact the City of Henderson, and Vance County. Leadership Vance gives participants a chance to meet and exchange ideas with each other and with current community leaders.

Program graduates are equipped with the knowledge and the network to assume leadership roles at a local, regional, or state level and beyond. “We’ve had many graduates of this program use what they have learned to pursue leadership roles on city councils,  nonprofits or other business board of directors, in addition to local school boards,” said Roberson.

Program cost is $325 for Chamber members and $400 for non-Chamber members.  The tuition fee includes all course materials, meals, retreat expenses, travel, graduation banquet and diploma.  This year we have available two scholarship spots in the program provided by the LV Class of 2016.  Applications for the two scholarship spots will be looked at and voted on by the LV Class of 2016.

Duke Energy Cautions Customers to be Alert of Persistent Scam

Don’t allow yourself to fall prey to a scam.  And don’t be more vulnerable now just because of snow.  Read the information below, which will help you avoid being taking advantage of.  This information is confirmed by Duke Energy District Manager Tanya Evans.

Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Statement:

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce has been notified by some of our members of a scam involving persons falsely identifying themselves as Duke Energy representatives. A caller, claiming to be a Duke Energy service technician, tells the customer that a work order has been issued to immediately disconnect service. The caller states that a disruption of service can be avoided if an immediate payment is made. The scammer provides a telephone number for the customer to call to make the payment. The customer’s call is answered as Duke Energy by a very legitimately-sounding but fake IVR system. Duke Energy emphasizes that their customers are never contacted and asked to make a payment by telephone and provides the notice below to their customers. Please share this information with your friends, families, and business associates.

Duke Energy Statement:

Duke Energy customers in five states are continually being targeted by scam artists claiming to represent the company. Phone, doorstep and email scammers claiming to be a utility company are nothing new – it happens to all utility companies throughout the U.S. and Canada. However, complaints about this particular scam have really increased over the last several months.

Scammers are calling residents and impersonating utility company staff, claiming to be collecting on late bills. They may falsify their caller ID information to make it appear as though the call is coming from Duke Energy or provide a number to call which, when answered, appears to be a Duke Energy contact.

Because we do occasionally contact our customers by phone, it can be difficult to tell a scammer from a real Duke Energy employee. Here are some tips:

 

  • If a caller specifically asks you to pay by prepaid debit card, this is a red flag. Prepaid debit cards are like cash and the transactions cannot be reversed.
  • Remember, you do not have to sign anything or give personal information to anyone calling you on the phone, sending you an email or showing up at your door.
  • If you feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call us at the number on your utility bill. This will ensure you are speaking to a real Duke Energy representative.

 

The only way to protect yourself is to be vigilant, stay informed and guard your personal information.  If you feel something’s not quite right about the situation, contact the police immediately and report the call if you feel it was an impostor.

Networking the Name of the Game at H/V Chamber’s next Luncheon

The Citizen of the Year award is presented each year by the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce to
recognize an individual for their volunteer work to make our community a better place to live.
The criteria used in making the selection includes:

  • The person must be a resident of the Henderson-Vance County community.
  • The acts and good deeds for which the award is presented must have been performed for the benefit of Vance County and its citizens.
  • The community at large should recognize, once the award is made, that it is deserved.
  • The activities resulting in the award should be regarded outside the recipient’s normal business or profession.

The recipient does not have to be a member of the Chamber.

WRAL TV’s Scott Mason to give Keynote Address at Henderson-Vance Chamber Banquet

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce will hold its 79th Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet on Tuesday, January 31, 2017.
Keynote speaker will be WRAL’s Tar Heel Traveler, Scott Mason. As a Road Scholar presenter, this project is made possible by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The event will take place at Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Express Employment Celebrates 15 Years

The HVCC Board and staff along with the Granville Chamber celebrated Express Employment Professionals 15 years serving the Local Community With a Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, September 22nd at 10:00 AM.  The Oxford Express Employment Professionals office celebrated its 15 years in business-year anniversary on August, 6 2016 said Hal Muetzel, franchisee of the Express office.

“The people and businesses of Oxford have made these last 15 years great ones,” said Muetzel. “We have enjoyed helping area businesses and job seekers with all their staffing needs, and we look forward to many more successful years.”

Vance Charter School Celebrates New Location

On Thursday, November 3rd, the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for Vance Charter School to celebrate the official opening of their brand-new building, located at 2090 Ross Mill Road in Henderson.  Students & parents, faculty and Board members, local dignitary and other supporters were in attendance.

This new facility is now home to over 645 students in grades K-9.  Once a dream shared by many, several years in the planning, then construction and now a facility that feels like home and will be around for decades to come.
