Community Partners of Hope 220 Seafood Fish Fry 4-23-18

On Monday, April 23 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Community Partners of Hope, which manages the local men’s homeless shelter and Hope House, will host its major fundraiser at 220 Seafood, 1812 North Garnett Street.

Community advocate and devoted volunteer Betty Boyd said, “Our dream is to offer a shelter that is open year-round and is able to provide employment and health resources to the men that we serve.”

Dr. Ron Cava, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Community Partners of Hope, said, “Community Partners of Hope is the only organization serving homeless men in at least the three counties of Vance, Granville, and Warren Counties and perhaps additionally Franklin.”

Boyd said, “When we closed the doors on the morning of April 1, 2018, it marked the 10th season of service for our emergency shelter for homeless men. The shelter is open from November 1 – March 31 each season. 65 men found a safe space, hot shower, warm evening meal, and a comfortable bed through the season. Hope House, our transitional home for men, was opened in April 2015. It is presently home to 6 men, five of those shelter residents this past season.”

Donations are tax deductible and will be accepted at the event or may be mailed to PO Box 1791, Henderson, NC 27536.

Cava said, “The ministry enjoys widespread support from a very diverse segment of our population. I dare say that CPOH does more with less than any other comparable ministry. ”

Volunteer opportunities are available, and your patronage at the fish fry or a gift would be most appreciated and used well to serve the community.

Dennis Jarvis

Economic Development Director Speaks at West End Community Watch

Click here to listen to the 4-18-18 edition of TownTalk, which featured Dennis Jarvis, II, the Director of the Henderson-Vance Economic Development Commission. He began this position on November 6th, 2017.

In addition, the following was submitted by Claire Catherwood of the West End Community Watch, which met Tuesday, April 17th, at which Jarvis spoke.

Jarvis noted that our area is on the edge of the fastest growing area in the southeastern United States. Changes are coming. While there are stumbling blocks in the way of Vance County’s growth, we do have many great qualities to offer. Our problems are the same as those that exist everywhere, on a national level. Realistically, it is expected to take 10-12 years for many of the plans made now to take hold in our area.

Broadband is currently being tested. Within 2 years, it is predicted that residents will have choices besides the traditional providers now in place.

The sale of Carolina Country Snacks to Wise Foods does not mean we will lose the company. The family connection remains and the company is not moving the operation.

Free Mobile Pharmacy and Health Care 4-27-18

Community Partners to Bring NC MedAssist’s Free Mobile Pharmacy and Health Care Resources to Individuals in Need

NC MedAssist will hold a Mobile Free Pharmacy Event in Henderson on Friday, April 27.  The event, which is in collaboration with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, is open to any low-income individual or family needing free health screenings, education and over-the-counter medications.  The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church (205 W Winder Street, Henderson, NC 27536).  Identification is not required to participate.

“Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is again pleased to partner with NC MedAssist on the Mobile Free Pharmacy event,” said Executive Director Val Short. “The event is expected to have a huge impact on the community.  Triangle North values the work we do in our community for those who are vulnerable and don’t have access to healthcare.  We hope to educate participants on the healthcare resources available in Vance County and surrounding communities.”

Individuals will receive up to up to 10 medicine cabinet items for their family/home.  Additionally, participants will receive other free healthcare services like information on NC MedAssist Free Pharmacy Program and community health resources.  NC MedAssist’s overall goal is to help ease the burden for those who are making the choice between buying food or purchasing medication.

The event is completely volunteer run.  Serving 800 individuals in one day takes many hands to make sure the event runs smoothly and ensures that all participants are served before the door closes. NC MedAssist is partnering with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, First Baptist Church and other safety-net organizations to recruit community members to serve in roles such as pharmacy consultation, client ‘personal shoppers’, and sorters.   If you would like to volunteer, please visit www.medassist.org to sign up.

“NC MedAssist is excited to work with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation and our area partners to give back to our neighbors in need,” stated CEO Lori Giang. “Through our collaboration we are able to reach more and more individuals and educate them on our free resources.  No one should go without medicine and this program is enabling us to reach those who are unaware of our free medications.”

There are currently more than 3,600 people in Vance County that live below the Federal Poverty Level and do not qualify for insurance.  Last fiscal year, NC MedAssist dispensed over $48 million in free prescription medication statewide.  For more information on the Mobile Free Pharmacy and NC MedAssist, please visit www.medassist.org.

About NC MedAssist: Founded in 1997, NC MedAssist is a statewide non-profit pharmacy that provides free prescription medicines to low-income, uninsured North Carolinians. NC MedAssist offers three programs that address the needs of children and adults: the Free Pharmacy Program, the Mobile Free Pharmacy, and the Senior Care Program. NC MedAssist dispenses more than $48.5 million worth of free prescription medication to 15,000 low-income North Carolinians each year. Narcan Kits Distributed in Vance Co. to Help Battle Opioid Crisis

By: Kelly Bondurant, Freelance Writer/Editor for Hire

Earlier this week, community members and leaders gathered at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson for a Town Hall meeting and to assemble Narcan kits, the treatment used to counteract a life-threatening opioid overdose.

A total of 700 kits, including a dose of the Narcan intranasal spray, were distributed to first responders, health departments, schools and interested community members in Vance and surrounding counties.

According to Elliot Clark, senior community executive with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare, the organization is “helping to distribute Narcan kits and get people resources to be able to literally help save lives and encourage people to enter into treatment for opioid dependence.”

Narcan, the only FDA-approved nasal form of naloxone, has been used to combat opioid overdoses, such as from heroin, for decades; however, it was previously available primarily through first responders. With the recent opioid crisis that has swept the nation, and proven especially hard-hitting in Vance County, the availability of the spray is becoming more wide-spread.

“Plenty of law enforcement agents are now carrying Narcan kits in their patrol cars,” said Clark. “They no longer have to wait for EMS to arrive in order to save a life.”

In addition to widely-distributing Narcan to prevent death from an opioid overdose, the local community is also ramping up efforts to promote prevention.

“It’s a community effort – not just one organization, not just first responders, or behavioral health professionals or schools; it’s all of us,” Clark said. “Education and awareness need to be at the forefront.”

According to Clark, County government is taking a very active role in addressing the health crisis. Multiple agencies have previously held, and continue to hold, community forums to discuss the crisis and educate the local area.

Initiatives such as Granville-Vance Public Health’s Project VIBRANT are focused on the opioid epidemic, specifically around the administration of Narcan. The Stepping Up Initiative that involves local law enforcement agents is also addressing the crisis.

“Prevention is hugely important and traditional methods of prevention need to revisited,” said Clark. “We need to start looking at prevention as a holistic health model and make it part of a conversation where even kids are comfortable talking about their mental health and how they are feeling.”

Cardinal Innovations is available by phone 24/7 for crisis support and treatment options. Those facing a crisis situation may call 1-800-939-5911 to speak with a licensed clinician.
