Former WRAL-TV Anchor Bill Leslie to Speak at Annual Granville Co. Chamber Banquet

In celebration of 77 years, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors announces that the annual banquet will be held Monday evening, January 28, 2019.

Banquet sponsors are BB&T, CERTAINTEED, DUKE ENERGY; GRANVILLE HEALTH SYSTEM, HICKS AND WRENN, LLP, THE SCHOOL OF GRAPHIC ARTS and VANNESS CHEVROLET.   

The evening’s presenter is well-known, retired, WRAL-TV anchor desk personality, Bill Leslie.  “Bill Leslie is an award-winning journalist and internationally acclaimed musician and composer. He retired from the anchor desk in 2018 after 34 years at WRAL-TV.

Retired WRAL-TV anchor and accomplished musician, Bill Leslie, will serve as the presenter at the 2019 Granville County Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

Bill has won more than 70 major news awards including two Peabody Awards, considered the Pulitzer Prize of broadcasting, along with five Emmys. As a veteran anchorman and environmental reporter for WRAL Television in Raleigh, Bill produced more than a dozen award-winning documentaries.

Famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma called Leslie ‘one of the greats in modern Celtic music.’  All eight of the CD’s produced by Bill have hit at or near the top of the world music charts. Leslie, who plays guitar, piano and Celtic whistle was named ‘Best New Artist’ worldwide by the NAR in 2005. He currently plays with a Raleigh based Celtic/Folk ensemble.

Bill’s orchestral composition Tall Ships was named the official song of the 2006 America Parade of Sail. His music has been performed by the North Carolina Symphony and the Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra.

Bill is also a popular storyteller and author of a book featuring his father’s watercolors of Western North Carolina.

The evening will once again include the presentation of the Chamber’s most prestigious award, the John Penn Citizen of the Year Award, recognizing outstanding community service.

A buffet dinner will be provided. Tickets are $40 each. Corporate tables of eight, with reserved seating, are available for $300.  Corporate tables of 10, reserved seating, are available for $380. Reservations are required prior to the event. As stated in the Chamber’s By-Laws, the following will apply:

C.  Nominations by petition. Additional names of candidates for directors can be nominated by petition bearing the genuine signature of at least ten (10) qualified members of the Chamber.  Such petition shall be filed within ten (10) days after the notice has been given of the names of those nominated. The determination of the Nominating Committee as to the legality of the petition shall be final.

D.  Determination. If no petition is filed within the designated period, the nominations shall be closed, and the nominated slate of candidates shall be declared elected by the Board of Directors. Installation of the Executive Committee and the Board shall take place at the Annual Banquet with responsibilities beginning in February of the new year at the Board of Directors Meeting.

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Recognition Committee announces that the committee is accepting nominations for the 2019 John Penn Citizen of the Year Award.  This prestigious award, named for Granville County’s signer of the Declaration of Independence, is presented at the Chamber’s Annual Membership Banquet.  The 2019 event will be held Monday, January 28, 2019, in the Civic Center at Vance-Granville Community College.

Nomination forms may be obtained at a Chamber office or may be downloaded from the Chamber’s website, www.granville-chamber.com.

Leslie to Speak at Chamber’s Annual Banquet, Citizen of the Year Nominees Needed

The Chamber’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 2019 speaker and entertainer for the annual banquet is Bill Leslie, an award-winning journalist and internationally acclaimed musician and composer. He retired from the anchor desk in 2018 after 34 years at WRAL-TV.

Leslie’s award-winning documentaries, his talents as “one of the greats in modern Celtic music,” and a popular storyteller and author are expected to draw a very large attendance for the Chamber’s 77th Annual Banquet in January.

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21 at Oxford Baptist Church’s Family Life Center – 147 Main St., Oxford. The event-sponsor is Bridgestone. The speaker will be John W. Turner, executive director of Veterans Life Center.

A Southern buffet breakfast will be served. There is no charge to attend, but please bring canned/nonperishable food items for Area Congregations In Ministry (ACIM).

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s eighth annual fall seafood event – “Cluck ‘N Shuck” – has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 1, 2018, due to the rainy weather forecast for the end of this week.

The event will be held from 5:30 until 8 p.m. at The Red Barn on Golf Course Road (off Lake Devin Road) in Oxford.

Caterer Leon Nixon’s dinner menu offerings will include steamed oysters, fried shrimp, fried fish, fried chicken tenders, slaw, buttered potatoes, hushpuppies, tea, Pepsi-Cola products and cold beverages.

The event will be held at the same venue – The Red Barn – where it has been held the past five years. This location provides an incredible setting for those desiring to eat on the decks overlooking Lake Devin. Inside seating on the ground floor of The Red Barn is also available.

Residents Urged to ‘Shop Granville First’ on Small Business Saturday – Nov. 24

Now in our 4th year, the Shop Granville First event is even bigger and better than ever. What started as an idea to leverage the consumer-minded weekend and help the small, local business across Granville county has grown into an annual event. We’re excited to see just how much this program is going to benefit the business community in 2018.

“In 2017, an estimated 108 million consumers reported shopping or dining at local independently-owned businesses on Small Business Saturday — generating roughly $12 billion in reported spend.” 1

The impact that Shop Granville First has had on the greater Granville county area is significant. Participating business reported that the revenue generated on Small Business Saturday in the first 3 years is an 11% increase over past years. 2

Communities United

“As shopping small catches on in communities everywhere, Small Business Saturday goes from a cause to a day of community celebration. 90% of consumers surveyed said Small Business Saturday has had a positive impact on their community.” 3

Let’s do this again, together!

Neighborhood champions, community leaders, and volunteers are working hard to prepare for the 4th Annual Shop Granville First event to take place on Saturday, November 24, 2018. The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is taking the lead on this, and will serve as headquarters for any business or consumer who wishes more information on participating. Shopping bags, instructions, coupons and more will be distributed at the Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast.

We look forward to another successful Small Business Saturday. Remember, anything you want or need, you can get in Granville County, so Shop Granville First!

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the postponed date for the last Alive After Five event of 2018 – Thursday, October 18th – will feature the music and entertainment of JIM QUICK AND COASTLINE BAND. This very popular and well-known group of entertainers is looking forward to performing after the original date was delayed due to Hurricane Florence.

Jim Quick “is the kind of guy you genuinely want to call a friend. With the charm only a true Southerner can possess, he brings his talent to the stage with a quick-witted, knee-slapping sense of humor coupled with the clear sincerity of his love for his craft.

As a child, I was real mischievous playing pranks and makin’ jokes, doin’ stupid stuff you do as a kid. People would laugh. The more they laughed, the more I’d act a fool. It was like applause for more, more, more. I loved being the center of attention. Still do. Add music and, well, that’s spice to the concoction! That’s how I roll.”

And, “roll” he does. Quick’s been touring the Southeast US for more than 20 years, playing nearly 250+ shows per year, and has released more than 11 albums including his newest DOWN SOUTH.
