Filing Period Ends For November Elections; Stovall’s Mayor Janet Parrott Retiring After 42 Years

The town of Stovall will choose a new mayor for the first time in more than four decades in the upcoming elections in November; incumbent Oxford Mayor Jackie Sergent will face challenger Sherry Shavon Hester and the three other incumbent mayors of Butner, Creedmoor and Stem are running unopposed.

The filing period ended today (Friday) at noon for the Nov. 2 municipal elections, said Tonya Burnette, county elections director.

Janet Parrott, Stovall’s mayor, did not file for re-election. The two candidates who filed are Curtis S. Pugh and current town board member Mike Williford.

Parrott told WIZS News she is retiring from her role as mayor after 42 years. She was first elected in 1979 when she was 24 years old, she added, but will continue to work as administrator for the town of Stovall.

Eight candidates filed for seats on the Oxford Board of Commissioners – incumbents Patricia Fields and S. Quon Bridges filed for re-election and newcomers Bryan Cohn, Courtney Crudup, Walkiria Jones, Melanie Kaye Moseley, John L. Oliver and B. Seth Lumpkins also filed.

Three candidates for Stovall Commissioner are Douglas Lunsford, Jr., Carl T. Roberts and Tonya Sneed.

Susan Cope, Kevin Easter and Frank N. Shelton, III filed to run for commissioner in the town of Stem.

In Butner, Michel Branch, Judy Cheek and Tom Lane filed for seats on the Butner Town Council; in Creedmoor, Emma L. Albright and Robert Way filed for commissioners’ seats.

Butner Mayor Terry Turner, Creedmoor Mayor Bobby Wheeler and Stem Mayor Casey Dover face no opposition.

Revlon donates hand sanitizer to city employees

Revlon, a name long associated with health and beauty products like shampoo and makeup, showed up Monday to the City of Oxford municipal building with a timely donation, but it won’t make hair more manageable or lashes thicker. It will, however, keep your hands clean.

Oxford city employees gladly received 500 bottles of hand sanitizer, donated by Revlon, that city employees across all departments can use to keep them safe.

Revlon Director Tim Lumpkins presented the boxes of hand sanitizer to City Manager Alan Thornton, City Clerk Cynthia Bowen, Human Resources Director Melissa Labar, Engineering Technician Darrell Smith and Code Enforcement Officer Antwan Rice.

City officials released a press release and said, “We are truly thankful to have wonderful neighbors and are proud to serve the great City of Oxford.”

On Wednesday, City of Oxford staff took steps to receive covid-19 vaccinations.  The event took place at the Oxford City Hall Auditorium.  The vaccinations were administered now that Phase 3 is underway in North Carolina, which allows frontline workers to get the shots.

In attendance, among others, were City Manager Alan Thornton and Parks and Recreation Director Tina Cheek.  Thornton said in a news release as to why he decided to receive the vaccine, “I and the City believe it is important to receive the vaccine and encourage everyone to do so when the opportunity arises.”  He extended appreciation to Granville Healthy Systems and Granville Vance Public Health for all of their hard work during this time.

City of Oxford Commissioners Meeting Tues, Feb 13, 2018

The City of Oxford Commissioners meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13, 2018.  Please click here for the agenda.

One of the items WIZS News will be following up on is agenda item number eight, unified development ordinance, and its local impact.  In speaking with Mayor Jackie Sergent, she was not ready to offer full comments prior to the meeting or before speaking with the boards and committees.  However, the gist of what she did say to WIZS News was many communities already have this and that it’s a modern-day times thing to do.

Item 8 reads:

Consider contracting with McAdams out of Durham NC in creating a UDO (unified development ordinance). The purpose of the City creating a Unified Development Ordinance is to combine the zoning, subdivision and all other regulations into one user-friendly set of development regulations. This will be an 18-month process involving various boards and creation of a Steering Committee. The current zoning ordinance was last revised in 2003. With the downtown revitalization efforts as well as the other projects moving forward, it is necessary to have a Unified Development Ordinance that is clear and easily understood, while also creating standards that uphold the community’s vision for the future. Recommended action: Staff & Planning Board recommends moving forward with McAdams in creating a Unified Development Ordinance.
