With Pink Out Vance County 2026 just around the corner, Sisters Speak Life, Inc. Founder and CEO Freddie Ann Harris invites the community to help spread the word – and spread the light – about breast cancer awareness.
Harris shared details with the Henderson City Council Monday about the Oct. 1 luminary event that will take place in the public space outside McGregor Hall. Luminaries are $5 – add a festive pink ribbon for another $10 – and indicate whether the luminary is in honor of, in support of or in memory of individuals who have been affected in some way by breast cancer. The luminaries will be displayed from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
There’s also a box to check that reads “My Pink Promise,” a pledge that Harris encourages individuals to make to get annual mammograms and promote awareness of breast cancer.
The luminaries will “light the way” for the Saturday, Nov. 7 Mammogram bus that will be parked outside McGregor Hall to provide free mammograms for eligible individuals between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Last year, 26 people got free mammograms and Harris said Sisters Speak Life was able to pay for five of them for clients who needed it.
Purchases of luminaries is one way the nonprofit raises money to help provide mammograms for those who are either uninsured or underinsured, she said.
Sometimes it feels that we have nothing in common, Harris said during her comments to the City Council. But if you haven’t been personally affected by cancer, chances are you know someone who has, she added. That’s one thing we all have in common, and it’s important to come together in the search for a cure.
