Granville Sheriff Brindell Wilkins Indicted for Obstruction of Justice

100.1 FM / 1450 AM WIZS; Local News broadcasts M-F 8am, 12pm, 5pm

-Press Release, Wake County District Attorney’s Office

On Monday, the Grand Jury of Granville County returned indictments against elected Sheriff Brindell Wilkins for two counts of felony obstruction of justice. These charges come following a ten-month investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, at the request of Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman.

District Attorney Freeman adopted the case at the request of District Attorney Mike Waters, whose district includes Granville County, following a determination by Waters that he had a conflict in the matter.

Wilkins was voluntarily served with the indictments by agents with the State Bureau of Investigation, assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and processed on the charges. He appeared before a magistrate and released on a $20,000 unsecured bond.

His first court date will be October 9, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. in Granville County.

A second investigation into allegations concerning the Granville County Sheriff’s Office’s accounting practices and controlled substance interdiction efforts remains pending.

WIZS will bring you more on this story as it develops.

Corbitt Preservation Assoc. Finds ‘Golden Treasure’ in Rare Automobile

Excerpt from the Corbitt Preservation Association August Newsletter:

About two weeks ago, Charles Powell received a call from a lady saying she had a Corbitt Automobile. Charles asked everyone at the end of the Corbitt Preservation meeting if anyone would want to go with him to check it out and, of course, Steve Rosemond and Curtis Paul said “yes” right away.

So Saturday morning, August 10, Charles Powell, Steve Rosemond, Curtis Paul, Jerry Capps and Bruce Essick met at the lady’s house in Greensboro, NC.

When they opened the old barn door, there sat a Corbitt Automobile Body all nice and dry with its interior intact. The car even has the original VIN plate on the dashboard. This 4-door touring car was most likely built in 1911-1912. This is an amazing find, and we had to have it no matter what.

The lady agreed to sell it to the Corbitt Preservation Association for $1,500. We took the $1,500 out of our general fund in order to take possession of this golden treasure of ours.

We are now going to ask for donations to help replenish our $1,500 back to our general fund account. This was something we just could not live without.

The car body will be on display at our Corbitt Truck Show & Reunion in downtown Henderson on Saturday, October 19, 2019, for everyone to see and enjoy. We don’t know as of this moment how it will be displayed after the show, all we know is we are PROUD owners of a Corbitt Automobile body!

This also proves the importance of our website; without it, the lady would have never known who to contact about a Corbitt Automobile.

There is only one thing left to find, and that is a Corbitt Buggy. We believe we will find one, one day!

The Corbitt Preservation Association is strong and we have lots of dedicated people who love our brand. We will keep digging and digging until we find the next treasure. You never know what will happen next!

VGCC Introduces Online Career Coach Program for Students

100.1 FM / 1450 AM WIZS; Local News broadcasts M-F 8am, 12pm, 5pm

-Press Release, Vance-Granville Community College

Vance-Granville Community College recently introduced a new web-based service that will help students explore careers and make plans for their future.

Through the interactive “Career Coach” program, students can:

  • take a career assessment and get suggestions for possible career goals, based on their interests;
  • access the latest information about jobs and salaries in the region for various career fields; and
  • learn about particular VGCC education and training programs that lead to the careers they want.

By linking jobs to education, current or future students can see the potential “return on investment” of community college programs. They can even see a list of employers in the region who have posted jobs for a particular type of career within the last year.

“Not only current students, but also people who are thinking about becoming students, can use the site to learn more about various career options and the VGCC programs that prepare them for those careers,” said VGCC Director of Career Services Linda Fletcher. “Users can create accounts which allow them to save the results of their assessments and their favorite careers or programs of study. We think this will help members of our community make well-informed career decisions and get training for skills that are in demand by employers.”

Other special features of Career Coach include a tool that allows veterans of the armed services to find civilian careers that are related to their military occupations and a tool that helps users create a professional resume.

Career Coach is linked from the VGCC.edu home page and can be accessed directly at vgcc.emsicc.com.

UNC-Charlotte 49ers ‘Electrifying’ Offense Outpaces UMass Minutemen

Before kickoff on Saturday, September 14, the Massachusetts Minutemen (UMass) led 1-0 in series play against the Charlotte 49ers. UMass dominated the 49ers in the first quarter of last season’s meeting, outscoring them 28-0. Several months later, the 49ers got their revenge.

The 49ers wasted no time putting points on the scoreboard. In the opening minutes of the second quarter, the 49ers took a 28-0 lead over the Minutemen. Charlotte’s electrifying, confident offensive unit kept up the intensity, outpacing the Minutemen and piecing together an impressive stat sheet.

Superior blocking on special teams and reliable run blocking schemes paved the way for several highlight-worthy plays executed by some young talents. In total, the 49ers scored 52 points, accumulated 533 yards from scrimmage and rushed for a season-high 338 yards.

Charlotte’s defense demonstrated excellent speed off the line and intelligent positioning, limiting Minutemen’s Andrew Brito to 127 yards and forcing an interception. Brito was forced to get rid of the ball quickly as Charlotte’s defensive line continuously pushed him out of his comfort zone. The unit’s ability to consistently evade blockers resulted in an exciting five-sack performance.

With solid performances coming from the dynamic duo of Chris Reynolds (10-of-12 passing for 155 yards) and running back Benny LeMay (113 yards), the 49ers have now scored 40-plus points in back-to-back-to-back games and lead C-USA in total offense.

Up next, the 49ers will travel south to face Clemson, who is fresh off a stunning 49-6 win on the road.
