Cancer Society To Benefit From Corbitt Emporium Auction

Tomorrow’s auction at Corbitt Emporium will have a special twist, thanks to the owner of the collectibles and antiques business – he’s donated all the remaining inventory to the American Cancer Society.

Aaron Ramsey opened the business more than five years ago, which featured items from individual vendors as well as items he had collected over the years. The auction is being sponsored by Frances and Friends, a local Relay for Life team.

The auction begins at 10 a.m., but the 1508 Second Street location will open at 9 a.m. for customer viewing.

Auctioneers Dan Weldon and Tom Eaves will conduct the sale, which includes antiques, collectibles, glassware, old tools, seasonal items and much more.

Items purchased from the American Cancer Society are tax-deductible.

The Survivor Lap will take place at 6:30 p.m. and all cancer survivors are invited to participate. As a cancer survivor, you’ll be a guest of honor and cheered on by your community. Caregivers are also a major part of Relay For Life events and are honored for their support. Please plan to attend this special event!

Annual Relay for Life Survivor Dinner Set for Friday, April 20, 2018

By: Kelly Bondurant, Freelance Writer/Editor for Hire

The 2018 Relay for Life Survivor Dinner will be held at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church at 905 Americal Road in Henderson on Friday, April 20.

The evening of dinner and entertainment is free of charge to the area’s cancer survivors and one family member of their choice.

The dinner, sponsored by Maria Parham Health, begins at 6 p.m. and requires advance registration. Participants must RSVP to the American Cancer Society by Tuesday, April 10.

According to Hope Breedlove, co-chair of the Relay’s Cancer Survivor Committee, the registration process has slightly changed from previous years.

“This year’s registration process only requires a simple phone call to the American Cancer Society in Raleigh,” said Breedlove. “Sue will answer the phone or you can leave a message. She needs to know three things – your name, if you’ll bring a guest and your t-shirt size.”

To register for the dinner, participants should call the American Cancer Society at (919) 334-5221. As Breedlove explained on Monday’s Town Talk, if there is no answer, callers should leave a detailed message.

Participants may also email Sue.Cain@cancer.org to RSVP.

Survivors will receive a free Relay t-shirt at the dinner along with more detailed information concerning this year’s Relay event.

Caregivers and community members will have an opportunity to purchase a t-shirt from Relay teams over the next few months. As Breedlove explained, money raised from t-shirt sells is a large part of the fundraiser for cancer research.

“I encourage all survivors to join us,” Breedlove said. “We have a really fun time at this dinner and it gives us volunteers an opportunity to honor our local cancer survivors.”

This year’s Vance County Relay for Life will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Henderson. Specifically, the event will be held in the square between the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library and the Henderson Police Department.

This is a change in location from previous years when the event was held at Southern Vance High School.

The opening ceremony will begin promptly at 11 a.m. on June 23. Cancer survivors will walk the first lap shortly after the opening ceremony concludes at approximately 11:30 a.m. with the caregiver’s recognition to follow.

As in years past, a tent will be set up for survivors to gather for fellowship, snacks and to wait for the ceremony to begin.

A new registration process will be used for this year’s Relay event. Survivors, caregivers and walkers may register for Relay for Life online at www.RelayForLife.org/VanceNC or by calling 1-800-227-2345 and choosing option number two from the menu.

Exclusively for survivors, an on-site registration will be held at the survivor dinner and at Relay for Life. The majority of survivors will only need to verify their contact information and sign the event waiver.

According to Breedlove, the entire committee is looking forward to the Relay event and are “excited to have this time to honor our local cancer survivors.”

Preparations – Relay for Life of Vance Co. June 23

Difficult to believe Relay for Life of Vance County is just five months away.  Right now, teams are hard at work including the overall committee of people organizing this year’s event, with hearts and souls being pouring into the preparations.

One Relay for Life of Vance County chairperson, Christy Bennett, appeared on WIZS TownTalk today for the first 25 minutes of the show, and you can listen in by clicking here.

Bennett said, “Vance County has done exceptionally well over the years.  When we first started Relay for Life, I think we raised about $56,000.  By 2002, we had raised $313,000.00, which is a large amount for a small county that we are.  I think it’s an amazing amount.  We have not been as high.  We did meet our goal this past year of $75,000, which is still a good amount, but we don’t want to see Relay for Life go away.  It is something that people who fight everyday, who are fighting cancer, need that help.  They need people to work, to volunteer, to want to have hope as they have hope to have another day.  So, we’re working towards an ultimate goal, and, you know, sometimes the money may not be as high as we would like it to be, but every little bit helps.  And when we’re out in the community asking people for help and to volunteer, it doesn’t matter how small, people say I can’t contribute but so much.  It doesn’t matter.  It doesn’t matter how little it is, it still helps.  We’re still fighting for the same goal.”

Vance Relay 2018 will be changed some, moving to downtown Henderson on Breckenridge Street and lasting for 12 hours from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. on June 23.

You can view the Relay for Life of Vance County web page at https://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=88798 or simply click on the banner on wizs.com.

Bennett said the event was moved to hopefully increase participation, and she said it was a rain or shine event, that Relay is about fighting cancer no matter what just like a cancer patient does everyday.

She said a successful Relay was like trying to plan a successful wedding.  “You’ve got your entertainment.  You’ve got your food.  You’ve got you walk.  You’ve got all the things you need to have to bring all this positive energy, so that these people who are fighting (cancer) feel like they’re being embraced by their community, and you’re doing this for them.  So, it takes a lot people.  Right now, we have about 25 people who are really working at trying to plan this event, and we need more.  If we don’t get more, and things don’t change, there won’t be a Relay for Life in years to come.  And I don’t want that to happen.  I want people to embrace it and want to help with it just like any other fundraising that we have in our community,” Bennett said.

Vance Relay for Life To Proceed Friday 3p-12a at SVHS

The Relay for Life of Vance County is scheduled to proceed as planned Friday, according to Jon Charest, a community manager with the American Cancer Society.  He said this was a local decision made by the local committee.

Rain will not be an issue.  If there is lightning, that changes things for safety reasons.  WIZS will have the latest.

WIZS 1450 AM and wizs.com, along with updates on facebook.com/wizsradio and twitter.com/wizsradio, will broadcast live from the event.  This year’s RELAY will be from 3:00 p.m. Friday until 12:00 midnight at Southern Vance High School.

The following is straight from the Relay for Life of Vance County Facebook Page and is published with permission:

Just one day till Relay For Life of Vance County! We are still planning on having the event despite the rain.

The weather forecast has changed every time we’ve looked at it so this was a hard decision to make. We are hoping for no thunderstorms because if we have lightning then we need to cancel. So please keep an eye on the weather. Plan to be with us even in the rain. If you see lightning then please either don’t come out or head to your vehicle if you are at the event. We will announce any updates during the event as needed.

If we endure a little rain for Relay For Life that will be a minor concern compared to the struggle our cancer patients are going through and our survivors have been through during their fight against cancer. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to the event. Just ask people to dress accordingly and bring an umbrella.

Teams are welcome to begin to set up at the track today after 5 PM. Setup on Friday can begin anytime after 9 AM. Remember that no vehicles will be allowed on the track after 2:30 PM or depending on the weather.
