The Local Skinny! Relay For Life To Take Place September 30th

The Vance County Relay for Life is resuming its efforts after several years of reduced activity because of pandemic restrictions. The entire community is invited to the Henderson Family YMCA on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. to participate, honor and remember.

Freddie Harris and Donald Matthews shared details about the event on Wednesday’s segment of The Local Skinny!

“I believe this will be great start for Relay for Life coming back to Vance County, said Harris, one of the organizers from St. James Missionary Baptist Church that is sponsoring the event. There will be an opening ceremony and luminaria lining the track, with lots of activities in between.

The theme is Uniting in Hope, Empowering Together, she said. The main word is hope, Harris said.

Hope is the key word, Harris said. “I’m hoping that hope will inspire people and that people will feel hopeful from this event,” she said.
“Not just cancer survivors, but the city and the county. We really need to come together.”

Donald Matthews remembers the Relay events of some years ago when thousands of people would gather to participate. He was in charge of logistics, and it was challenging to organize 75 or more teams and have them in the right place at the right time.

There are currently nine teams signed up to participate, but the event can accommodate more.

The event is open to the whole community, and Matthews invites other churches, businesses and individuals to take part.

“Just because COVID stopped (us), cancer didn’t stop,” he said. “Our goal is, one day, to work ourselves out of a job. I’d like to see (cancer) eradicated, if I’ve got anything to do with it,” he said.

Harris invites the community to come out and show support for cancer survivors.

Cancer survivors like herself, a two-time cancer survivor.

“We want everybody to come out and be a part of it,” she said.

To register a team, call the American Cancer Society at 800.227.2345 or visit https://secure.acsevents.org/site/STR?pg=entry&fr_id=105850  to find out more, make a donation or purchase a luminary.

Luminary bags are $10 each, 3 for $25 or $25 for one gold luminary.

TownTalk: Relay For Life Luminaria Ceremony To Light Up Garnett St.

The Vance County Relay for Life is sponsoring a Luminaria ceremony on Oct. 23 that is shaping up to illuminate a portion of Garnett Street with little bags of light to remember or honor lives affected by cancer.

Like so many events affected by the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and safety precautions,  local organizers said they came up with a drive-thru event that people could participate in and enjoy while following social distancing protocols.

Christy Bennett talked with John C. Rose on Monday’s Town Talk and gave details about how to be involved.

It was somewhat of a challenge, Bennett conceded – how would they go from what had become a huge event with lots of people to an event that would satisfy the safety practices and still be a successful fundraiser?

Organizers Bennett, Carolyn Williams and Jeanette Brummitt “got creative,” she said.  “It was really a group effort to try to find something we could do that would work,” she added.

“We’re keeping it real simple. It’s a good way to light up downtown.” People can drive down Garnett Street to enjoy the luminaries or they can walk along the sidewalks, if they have their masks on.

Bags are $10 each and can be purchased on the day of the event, but they also are available ahead of time so they can be decorated with names of loved ones before being returned and placed along with all the others.

They’ve already sold more than 700 so far, but Bennett said “the goal is to sell as many as we can.”

Bennett said the city is expected to add some extra illumination to the event – the underpass will be bathed in a purple glow, and the newly installed fountains will show off their multicolor light show as well.

Luminaries sometimes need a little weight to stay in place, but Bennett and her crew have thought of that, too. They will use canned foods to anchor the paper bags, which will be donated to ACTS afterward.

Town Talk 06/17/20: Support Relay For Life With $20 on the 20th Fundraiser

100.1 FM ~ 1450 AM ~ WIZS, Your Community Voice ~ Click to LISTEN LOCAL

Jon Charest, senior manager of community development for the American Cancer Society, Inc., appeared on WIZS Town Talk Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Relay For Life of Vance County is partnering with Relay teams all across the state to ask volunteers and partners to donate $20 on Saturday, June 20, 2020, in honor of the estimated 20,410 North Carolinians who will pass away from cancer this year.

With cancer patients being among the most vulnerable to COVID-19, and with the pandemic putting the mission of the American Cancer Society in jeopardy due to its impact on fundraising, the goal of the June 20 event is to raise $20,000 for research.

Many in-person Relay events have been canceled this year due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, but cancer never rests. Mark your calendar for this Saturday to rally team members, friends, family and/or your social media following to donate $20.

Donations may be made through the Relay For Life of Vance County event website (www.RelayForLife.org/VanceNC), Facebook Fundraising, or the American Cancer Society FUNdraising app.

Vance County Cancer Survivor Dinner Canceled; Relay for Life to be Rescheduled

-Information courtesy Hope Breedlove, Relay for Life Survivor Committee

The Vance County Cancer Survivor Dinner scheduled to take place Friday, April 17, 2020, at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church has been CANCELED for this year.

We know cancer patients are among those at high risk of serious illness from infection because their immune systems are sometimes weakened by cancer treatments.  We want to be as careful as we can on behalf of our patients, our volunteers, and the community at large during these uncertain times.

We are taking the coronavirus (COVID-19) very seriously and your health and safety are important to us. Due to the uncertainty of this situation, the duration of required restrictions and other associated mandates with COVID-19, we are unable to reschedule the event for this year.

We ask that you still register for the Relay for Life of Vance County event, which will be rescheduled for later this fall.  Your registration will enable us to order you a shirt that you will be able to pick up at the RFL event this fall.

Survivors, caregivers and walkers are welcome to register for Relay For Life online at www.RelayForLife.org/VanceNC or by calling 1-800-227-2345 (choose option #2 from the menu).

Thank you for your understanding. Please reach out to Hope Breedlove at (252) 436-1605 with any questions or concerns.

Vance Co. Relay for Life Set for Downtown Henderson – Sat., June 22

Jess Richards, community development manager with the American Cancer Society, was on Thursday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to discuss Vance County’s upcoming Relay for Life event in downtown Henderson.

Richards invited the entire community to join the annual event on Saturday, June 22, 2019, from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Breckenridge Street.

Relay for Life is a culmination of months of hard work by local volunteers and the efforts of numerous community fundraisers including golf tournaments, fun days and food plate sales.

In addition to food vendors, merchants, music, and a kid’s play area, participants are sure to appreciate the emotion of one of the main draws of Relay – the survivor’s lap.

“Cancer survivors walk one lap to kick off Relay for Life, with their caregivers joining them for the second lap,” said Richards. “It’s a very emotional, uplifting and wonderful thing to see and cheer on.”

Local sponsors for the event include Maria Parham Health, Aldi, Sunrock, Superior Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram FIAT, Ninja Realty and Fred’s Towing & Transport.

Many other organizations have provided “in-kind” donations of their services such as golf carts for event volunteers and security courtesy of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and Henderson Police Department.

Richards said the Relay for Life event would not be possible without the generous assistance of sponsors, in-kind donors and fundraisers.

According to Richards, of the money raised for the American Cancer Society, 79% goes to research while the remaining 21% goes to staffing. “We hope by the end of the year to get that figure to 80/20,” said Richards. “Please know that the American Cancer Society is really working hard to find a cure.”

To register for Vance County’s Relay for Life, or for additional information, please visit the website (click here) or call 1-800-227-2345.

The next – and last – planning meeting for the 2019 event will be held on Thursday, June 13 in the auditorium of Maria Parham Health in Henderson. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. for teams and 7 p.m. for all others.
