‘Pink Out’ Vance County 2026: Purchase Luminaries For October To Light The Way For Nov. 7 Mammogram Bus Visit

September 21, 2026/by Laura Gabel

With Pink Out Vance County 2026 just around the corner, Sisters Speak Life, Inc. Founder and CEO Freddie Ann Harris invites the community to help spread the word – and spread the light – about breast cancer awareness.

Harris shared details with the Henderson City Council Monday about the Oct. 1 luminary event that will take place in the public space outside McGregor Hall. Luminaries are $5 – add a festive pink ribbon for another $10 – and indicate whether the luminary is in honor of, in support of or in memory of individuals who have been affected in some way by breast cancer.

Stop by McGregor Hall on Sept. 29 between 5;30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to purchase a luminary bag in memory, in honor of or in support of someone affected by breast cancer. The luminaries will be displayed from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.

There’s also a box to check that reads “My Pink Promise,” a pledge that Harris encourages individuals to make to get annual mammograms and promote awareness of breast cancer.

The luminaries will “light the way” for the Saturday, Nov. 7 Mammogram bus that will be parked outside McGregor Hall to provide free mammograms for eligible individuals between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Last year, 26 people got free mammograms and Harris said Sisters Speak Life was able to pay for five of them for clients who needed it.

Purchases of luminaries is one way the nonprofit raises money to help provide mammograms for those who are either uninsured or under insured, she said.

Harris said she’s excited about a  partnership with Maria Parham Health and a Warren County organization to provide mammograms for any overflow clients that the mammogram bus can’t accommodate..

“It’s  all about partnerships, about people coming together,” she said.

Sometimes it feels that we have nothing in common, Harris said during her comments to the City Council. But if you haven’t been personally affected by cancer, chances are you know someone who has, she added. That’s one thing we all have in common, and it’s important to come together in the search for a cure.

“We want people to know that it’s important to get your mammograms,” Harris said.

SportsTalk: Vipers to Celebrate Homecoming with game against Heritage

October 17, 2025/by Scout Hughes

UPDATE – FINAL SCORE

Heritage 42

Vance County 33

RECAP MONDAY ON SPORTSTALK

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

The Vance County Vipers are playing at home for the first time in a month, and Coach Aaron Elliott hopes that the team is ready to bring some extra energy to the field Friday as the team hosts the Heritage Huskies in a conference matchup.

Friday is also Homecoming, as well as Pink Out Night for breast cancer awareness, so hopefully the stands will be a sea of pink for the game, which kicks off at 7 p.m.

“It feels good to be back home,” Elliott said. “I think everybody’s excited to be back home playing…we’re hoping to bring some energy to the game this week,” he said on Thursday’s SportsTalk with WIZS’s Scout Hughes and George Hoyle.

The team’s been improving its running game – rushing for about 150 yards last week, which Elliott said is a reflection of working on the running game at practice.

In preparing for Friday’s matchup, Elliott said the Huskies have a good running game themselves, and the Vipers coaching staff has been figuring out how to defend not one, but two quarterbacks that the Huskies use regularly in their offensive game.

Viper linebacker Jalen Maze broke his collarbone in last Friday’s game against Knightdale, which is a big loss to the Vipers as they continue conference play.

Elliott said he and his staff have been focused on keeping the players focused on the task at hand.

“We’ve got to eliminate the mistakes,” he said. “And we’ve got to win the turnover battle.” The Vipers had four turnovers against the Knights, and had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown.

Elliott said he’d love to see the home stands full of alumni, current students and others – all in pink – from the community out in support of the Vipers. “Hopefully we can get back in the win column this week,” he said.
