Oxford Prep Readies for K-4 Expansion, 2020/2021 Open Enrollment

Applications for new Kindergarten – 12th-grade student enrollments for Oxford Preparatory School’s (OPS) 2020 – 2021 school year will be available at oxfordprep.org when Open Enrollment begins on December 2, 2019.

OPS is an independent and tuition-free public charter school that is designed to mold students into future leaders through the completion of a rigorous curriculum while focusing on community service and developing an appreciation of the arts.

To be considered for a potential lottery, all applications must be submitted online by Friday, February 28, 2020. If more applications are received than available seats in any grade, a blind public lottery will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020.

All students choosing to attend OPS will need to confirm enrollment by completing and sending in an enrollment packet by Wednesday, April 1, 2020. After February 28, applications received will be placed at the end of the waiting list as determined by the lottery.

OPS offers a college preparatory curriculum, a variety of competitive middle school and varsity athletic teams, and has a main campus located at 6041 Landis Rd. in Oxford. The school currently operates in a permanent Upper School Building (Grades 7 – 12) and a temporary Lower School Building (Grades 5 & 6) on the main campus.

The school is in the final stages of USDA loan approval for a new permanent lower school facility (K – 6) that will be constructed on the main campus on Landis Rd. in Oxford. However, in the interim, OPS has submitted a request to Granville County Public Schools to operate K – 4  at the former Joe-Toler Oak Hill Elementary School site (8176 NC-96, Oxford, NC 27565), to which shuttle busing will be provided from the main campus on Landis Rd.

This potential agreement, governed by NC Law (§ 115C-218.35. ) would benefit Granville County Public Schools by reducing their operating costs for a closed school building and provide OPS the additional space for the increased enrollment that was approved by the NC State Board of Education in February.

OPS invites families of prospective students to learn more about the unique offerings of the school. All prospective families are invited to the school’s first Winter Wonderland on Saturday, December 7 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event will provide interested families a glimpse into the curriculum and vision of the Lower School while offering children a variety of fun activities coordinated by the school’s Interact Club.

The first information session for families of rising K – 6 students will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 6 p.m. Afterwards, tours will be conducted that will allow the opportunity to meet faculty.

In addition, prospective students are invited to spend time visiting the school on three Shadow Days so they can experience our unique school program firsthand. Visiting students accompany OPS student guides through their classes during a four-hour visit. It’s a chance to meet the staff and the students and to get a snapshot view of our engaging college preparatory classes. Oxford Prep PTO to Hold Community Yard Sale This Sat.

Oxford Preparatory School’s PTO is holding a community yard sale on Saturday, October 5, 2019, from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.  There will a wide variety of items for sale by multiple families.

The school is located at 6041 Landis Road in Oxford.

The public is encouraged to come out, enjoy browsing a large selection of items and support the school!

Oxford Prep Announces MaryAnn Crews as Lower School Director

Oxford Preparatory School (OPS), a free public charter school, is pleased to announce that MaryAnn Crews will be joining the leadership team as Lower School Director beginning July 2019.

In the coming 2019-2020 school year, the OPS Lower School is expanding down to serve the 5th grade. Beginning in August 2020, the school will again expand to become a full K-12 school. Because of this expansion, the new role of Lower School Director has been created. Vici Bradsher will remain in the role of Upper School Director.

MaryAnn Crews has 14 years of experience in education including her roles as a 5th-grade teacher, an assistant principal, and principal. She has an undergraduate degree from Wellesley College and a Masters in School Administration from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

She was a recipient of a North Carolina Principal Fellowship in 2011, as well as a recipient of Teacher and Principal of the Year for Granville County Schools. She is a resident of Oxford, along with her husband and two children.

“I am excited to join Oxford Prep to create an innovative and rigorous lower school program for students in Granville County. I believe schools should be places filled with joy where students are challenged daily to be the best they can be,” Crews remarked about the new opportunity.

“Among the many applicants for the position, MaryAnn’s passion, track record, and vision for the Lower School made her stand out from all of the applicants,” OPS Executive Director, Andrew Swanner commented. “The OPS Board and leadership team are thrilled to have MaryAnn join our organization.”

Oxford Preparatory School Honors Academic Excellence

On Thursday evening, January 31, Oxford Preparatory School presented honors to students who demonstrated academic excellence for the first semester of the 2018/2019 academic year.

Students in the lower school were recognized for making all A’s or A’s and B’s. Names of these students were published in January.

Students in grades 7-12 who have maintained a 3.0 with no grade below a C were granted honors designation. Those students who successfully reached a GPA of 3.5 or above and had no grade below a C merited Directors’ List status.

In addition to the honors certificate, those students on the Directors’ List received a special pin that they will display on their drape at their commencement. Students have the opportunity to earn a total of 12 pins – one for each semester they maintain a 3.5 GPA.

Oxford Preparatory School Chooses 2019 Homecoming Court

Oxford Preparatory School (OPS) recently crowned a new homecoming king and queen from amongst representatives of the senior class.

OPS Senior Homecoming court representatives included Camden Ross, daughter of Marc and Jackie Ross from Kittrell; Quincey Burreal, son of Yolanda Burreal also of Kittrell; MacKenzie Pendergrass, daughter of Amanda and Zack Burnette of Henderson; and Luke Overby, son of Tony and Angie Overby from Oxford.

OPS Interact Club President Avery Thomas and Vice-President Ey’Mania Alston crowned the king and queen who are chosen by the entire Griffin student body from the senior class representatives.

For the 2018/2019 school year, OPS Homecoming King is Quincey Burreal. Quincey is a senior who has been accepted to North Carolina Central University and plans to major in Business Administration.

Griffin Homecoming Queen for 2018/2019 is MacKenzie Pendergrass. MacKenzie is a senior who has been accepted to East Carolina University and plans on majoring in Nursing.

Oxford Preparatory School Announces 6th-Grade Honor Roll Recipients

Oxford Preparatory School is proud to announce the A and A/B Honor roll for 6th-grade students who have completed their 1st quarter. Students in 6th grade come to OPS from five surrounding counties.

The OPS mission is to develop students who are college ready and able to be competitive in the admissions process so that they are able to gain acceptance to the four-year college of their choice. Expectations are high for all students to perform at grade level and a robust curriculum is employed to help students reach these goals.

Students are provided instruction in math by Mrs. Tammy Pulliam using the Eureka math curriculum from Great Minds. Mr. Randy Smith and Ms. Alexa Cooke deliver English instruction using Wit and Wisdom curriculum also from Great Minds. A lot of interactive learning opportunities are delivered by Mrs. Lynne Corbett in science and social studies.

In addition to meeting these high expectations, most of these 6th-grade students have also been actively involved in sports such as volleyball, cheerleading, cross country and soccer and will soon be participating in swimming and basketball.

Oxford Prep Announces First Annual 9-11 Memorial 5K Run

Oxford Preparatory School will hold its first Annual 9-11 Memorial 5K run on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the school, 6041 Landis Road, Oxford. The race starts at 10:30 a.m. Participants are asked to park between 9:45 and 10:15 a.m.

Cost for adults (18 and over) is $20; children are $15. Each adult ticket comes with a free raffle ticket.

You may pay on site the day of the race or send payment to the attention of Rick Kenner – Oxford Preparatory School, 6041 Landis Road, Oxford, NC 27565.
