Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks News for March; Lots To Do

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department is gearing up for a busy spring with activities for the young and not-so-young residents in the community. Below is a listing of activities, some centered around upcoming holidays:

Thursday, Mar. 11 – St. Patrick’s Day Crafty Kids is for children ages 4-8. This event will begin at 6 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center and will be open to the first 12 participants to register. The cost is $5.00 per participant.  Register online at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/ or at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Rd., Henderson.  Participants must have an adult over the age of 18 with them at all times to help them with the crafts. Only the participant and one guardian will be allowed in the event due to COVID-19 restrictions. Anyone older than 5 years and are required to wear a mask at all times. Saturday, Mar. 27 – The annual Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department Egg Hunt from 9 a.m. to noon at Aycock Recreation Center. This event is open to the first 100 participants who register. Bring baskets to collect eggs and a camera to take photos! Participants also will receive a craft to take home. Everyone over the age of 5 years is required to wear a mask at all times. Register by Sunday, Mar. 21, 2021 at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/  or at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Rd. Thursday, Apr. 1 – Aqua Egg Hunt from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center for children ages 17 and younger. All swim levels are welcome, life vests are provided if needed. Parents are required to be in the pool area. Please bring a container to collect eggs. All eggs will be traded in for prize bags at the end of the hunt. Mondays at 4 p.m. – The Youth Services Unit of the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks continues to host a virtual “Know Your Rights” workshop on Mondays at 4 p.m. Learn how to protect your civil liberties and your basic rights in the sessions, live on the Henderson Vance Outreach Facebook page. For more information, contact Shantel Hargrove at 252-430-0382 or cac@ci.henderson.nc.us.

Mar. 2-Apr. 22 – Arthritis Exercise Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 2, from 2:30pm-3:30pm. This is a FREE low-impact, joint safe program developed for people with arthritis. This class has been proven to decrease pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. This class is also suitable for every fitness level.  Join by logging on to Facebook Live on the Henderson Vance Special Programs page or at Aycock Recreation Center.  Participants must preregister to participate at Aycock Recreation Center. Thursdays in April, May and June – Bingo for Seniors (age 55 or older). Participants can play Virtual Bingo by computer or phone or in person at the Aycock Recreation Center. There are 10 slots available at the recreation center.  Participants must contact Crystal Allen at 252.431.6091 callen@ci.henderson.nc.us by the Thursday before the scheduled Bingo to register or for more information.

Aycock Rec. Center Offers Limited-Time Free Indoor Track Usage

For a limited time, walkers will be welcome free of charge at the indoor Aycock Rec Center track. The Aycock Rec Center is located at 307 Carey Chapel Rd in Henderson.

This offer is good Monday – Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. in 30-minute increments. Limit of five people per block of time.

Walkers must wear a mask and sign in at the front desk.

Holiday Crafty Kids

Join the Henderson Vance Recreation & Parks Department for a holiday craft workshop for youth on Monday, December 21, 2020, at 6 p.m. at the Aycock Recreation Center.

Participants ages 4 to 8 will take part in crafts that are age-appropriate and holiday-themed. This event will be open to the first 12 participants to register. The cost is $5 per participant, and the registration deadline is Thursday, December 17, 2020.

Letters to Santa, Exercise Classes, Holiday Crafts & More at Aycock Rec. Center

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department announces upcoming events:

HVRPD Neck Gaiters – Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks is now selling neck gaiters, a multipurpose accessory that can be worn 12 different ways. It can be used as a breathable face covering and is actually required in some youth sporting leagues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Youth and adult sizes are available at the Aycock Recreation Center for $10 per gaiter.

Body Blast – a 45-minute group circuit training focusing on all the problem areas. This will be a high-energy, high-impact class guaranteed to get you into shape! This class is offered live on the Henderson-Vance Facebook page and at the Aycock Recreation Center on Mondays and Wednesdays.

You can sign up for classes online at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/. Only 10 participants are allowed in the class at Aycock Recreation Center. Classes are $2 for non-members and $1 for members.

Letters to Santa – Santa and his elves will be collecting your letters and handing out holiday goodies at the Aycock Recreation Center on Saturday, December 19, 2020, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Participants over the age of five and guardians are required to wear a mask at all times. Letters to Santa is open to the first 100 participants that register by Thursday, December 10, 2020.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department’s Trail of Terror Drive-Thru at King Daughter I Park (600 West Montgomery Street, Henderson) has been rescheduled to Monday, November 2, 2020, from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

Participants must enter the Trail of Terror on Young Street. The cost of the event is $5 per vehicle.

Pumpkin Pool Splash Offers Unique Way to Celebrate Fall

Join Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department for the 2nd Annual Pumpkin Splash on Monday, October 26, 2020, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Aycock Rec. Center.

Participants ages 17 and under will be able to pick out the perfect pumpkin from the Aycock Rec pool and then receive a goodie bag to take home.

Most Parks & Playgrounds Open; Aycock Rec. Center to Reopen Next Week

With North Carolina moving into Safer at Home Phase 2.5, the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department’s parks and playgrounds opened on Friday, September 11, 2020, with the exception of Fox Pond Park (may still access trails through Aycock Recreation Center) and Jackson Street Park.

Aycock Recreation Center will be opening on Monday, September 21, 2020, with the following operating hours:

  • Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., 1 – 5 p.m., 6 – 8 p.m.
  • Saturday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., 2 – 5 p.m.
  • Sunday 1 – 5 p.m.

Chestnut Street Basketball Court will be operating daily between the hours of 4 p.m. – dusk.

All patrons must adhere to the following guidelines at indoor and outdoor facilities:

  • Social Distancing
  • Wear Face Coverings
  • Mass gathering limits of 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will closely monitor and follow guidelines set by the City of Henderson, State of North Carolina and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Paint With DP

H-V Rec & Parks to Host Virtual Bingo, Second ‘Paint With DP’ Session w/ Prize

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department will have Virtual Bingo for Seniors, ages 55 or better, on Thursdays during the months of June and July. You will be able to join Virtual Bingo by computer or phone.

Participants must contact Crystal Allen at (252) 431-6091 (callen@ci.henderson.nc.us) by Thursday, June 11, 2020, to register for the Bingo scheduled for Thursday, June 18. Participants have the option to register for all the scheduled Bingo sessions at once.

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will also have another FREE “Paint With DP” Facebook Live Session. The Live session will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2020, at 2 p.m. on the Henderson-Vance Athletics Facebook page (click here).

Tune in to participate or just watch.

You can purchase affordable painting materials at Walmart, Ollie’s or Dollar General. Once we have completed painting, participants can send pictures of their masterpieces. The best painting will receive a $25 gift card.

Are you looking for an “EGG-citing” opportunity? The first 25 families to contact the Henderson Vance Recreation and Parks Department and meet the requirements will receive a FREE egg hunt at their house on Thursday, April 9, 2020.

You must live in Vance County, have two or more children, live in a single-family home and sign up by Wednesday, April 8, 2020, by 12 p.m. There is no fee to participate, but you must complete a program evaluation after the event.
