Wanna Be In A Movie? Casting Call For ‘Resurrecting Eden’ April 20 At Clearview Church

There’s a movie being made right here in Henderson, and producers want to give locals first crack at a casting call on Saturday, Apr. 20.

Budding performers are encouraged to “bring your A game” – A for Acting – when they head over to Clearview Church to meet with producers of “Resurrecting Eden,” the setting of which is Back to Eden Plantation off Satterwhite Point Road.

According to information from the Rev. Dr. Almice Floyd Gill, pastor of Blessed Trinity Ministries, the film’s director and producers will be on hand at the casting call, looking for local talent to be part of the film.

Kenneth Spellman owns Back to Eden, and he’s been working for several years to create a living museum of sorts at the historical property, once owned by the Wortham family. Among the structures on the property is a house where enslaved people lived before the Civil War.

Clearview Church has partnered with Spellman and it’s there that anyone interested is invited to participate. The casting call will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Clearview Church is located at 3485 U.S. 158 Business.

“This is an exciting time – I can’t wait to see it unfold,” said Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce President Sandra Wilkerson. “Kenneth is dedicated to Henderson and the community and insisted that the casting call start right here in Henderson prior to reaching out to larger areas of the country.”

Local businesses also have the chance to get their name up in lights, as it were, by becoming a film sponsor. Sponsorship levels range from the Bronze level – $500 – all the way up to Iridium – $20,000.

Maria Parham CEO Bert Beard Speaker For Chamber’s “State Of Health Care” April 23

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce is hosting the first “state of” session for 2024 on Tuesday, April 23 to discuss local health care.

Guest speaker for the lunchtime event is Bert Beard, CEO of Maria Parham Health.

The lunch and learn will begin at 12 noon at Southern Charm Event Center, 200 S. Garnett St.

Beard will share updates on a variety of health care topics and is scheduled to discuss what’s happening locally as well as at the state level with Medicaid expansion and access to health care, among other topics.

Tickets for the lunch and learn session are $30; purchase a table for 8 for $240.

Leadership Vance 2023 Class Forming Now – Apply By Jan. 27

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 2023 Class of Leadership Vance, a program designed to give emerging leaders an in-depth look at the community where they live and work.

Deadline to submit applications is Jan. 27; an orientation and team building activity will kick off this year’s program on Feb. 22, according to information from Chamber President Sandra Wilkerson.

Participants in Leadership Vance will gather for monthly from February through September for educational and information sessions on a variety of topics in the community, from local government and schools to tours of local businesses and industry.

The cost to participate is $500 for Chamber members and $750 for non-Chamber members and includes all meals, transportation and materials.

Edmonds Tennis & Education Foundation to Launch Scholarship Program With Ribbon-Cutting

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to recognize and launch the Edmonds Tennis & Education Foundation’s Endowment-Scholarship Program on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 4 p.m.

The outdoor ceremony, hosted by Jerry and Dorcel Edmonds (ETEF President and Vice-President) will be held at 127 Willow Creek Run, Henderson. Participants are asked to wear a mask; safety guidelines will be followed.

The Edmonds Tennis & Education Foundation (ETEF) is a nonprofit 501c3 youth development organization established in 2018. It is a subsidiary of the Willow Creek Tennis Retreat, based in Henderson, and aligned with the US Tennis Association.

The Foundation is dedicated to using the game of tennis to provide academic and athletic opportunities for under-resourced youth throughout rural NC, primarily focusing on youth between the ages of 5-18.

The ETEF Endowment has a goal of providing $2,500 in scholarships (5 @ $500) annually to deserving high school graduates continuing their education at an NC-based institution of higher learning.

Employee COVID-19 Quarantine & Returning to Work

The Chamber has received a Memo To Businesses and Employers from Kelsey Dickman with the Granville-Vance Public Health Department (here is the link). The memo gives some updates for you to be aware of as a local employer or HR manager concerning employee quarantine and isolation for COVID-19 cases in the workplace. Dickman indicated that the Granville-Vance Public Health Department website has also been updated with this information:  https://gvph.org/

Summary Notes – One change to note is criteria for release from isolation has been updated to the following: isolation can generally be discontinued 10 days after symptom onset and resolution of fever for at least 24 hours (reduced from 72 hours), without the use of fever-reducing medications, and with the improvement of other symptoms.

Additionally, GVPH would like to continue to emphasize that employers should not require a COVID-19 test result or a healthcare provider’s note for employees who are sick to validate their illness, qualify for sick leave, or to return to work. A test-based strategy (i.e. requiring negative tests) is no longer recommended to discontinue isolation, except in very specific circumstances in consultation with infectious diseases experts, per the CDC guidance regarding duration of isolation. Therefore, providers will no longer be able to offer testing to return to work.

Announcement of New Industry

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce is excited to welcome a new manufacturing industry and new employment opportunities to Vance County. An announcement was made this week by Governor Cooper, NC Dept of Commerce and our local EDC office that Select Products Holdings will be coming to Vance County – utilizing the space in the former Staples Distribution building, across from Vance-Granville Community College.

Select Products offers high-quality, affordable paper products ranging from facial and bath tissue to paper towels and napkins.

Counterfeit Money Discovered

Counterfeit $5 bills were recently discovered by a downtown Henderson business. All businesses (especially those in retail and service) should be aware of this situation.

Job Retention Grant (JRG) Program

The H-V Chamber received word from the NC Dept of Commerce that a new grant program for businesses and non-profits has been announced. If you are a business owner/manager or a non-profit organization manager and you have experienced interruption due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, this new Job Retention Grant (JRG) Program may be a valuable resource for you.

The NC Dept of Commerce has posted the application and guidance, including a FAQ, for businesses. The deadline for applications is September 1, 2020, so you will need to respond right away. Read the eligibility carefully!

Registration Underway for Annual H-V Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament

Join the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce and presenting sponsor BB&T (now Truist) at Kerr Lake Country Club for the 22nd Annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament.

This super ball tournament is one of the Chamber’s largest fundraising events for the year.

Date: Thursday, October 8, 2020

Times: Registration – 11:45 a.m.; Lunch – 12:15 p.m.; Welcome/Rules – 12:45 p.m.; Golf Begins – 1 p.m.

Tournament Entry Fee: $440/Foursome. Sponsorships are available.

Registration Deadline: September 25, 2020

Tournament fee includes cart and green fees, mulligan, gift bag, lunch, beverages/snacks on the course and an awards ceremony.

Awards for first, second and third place teams will be given. Skills contests will include Hole-in-One, Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin.

Census 2020

Vance County Needs Residents to Respond to the 2020 Census

If you haven’t already responded to the Census, time is running out. The 2020 Census has been shortened and now ends on September 30. Approximately 4 million North Carolinians still need to be counted or we risk losing an estimated $74 billion over the next decade.

Vance County’s response to the census from our citizens has been low. We need your help to get the word out.

Please respond today at my2020census.gov or 844-330-2020.

Responding to the Census is safe, easy and important for our state’s future. Census workers will begin going door-to-door starting August 11. You can avoid their knock on your door by responding now online, by phone or by mail.

Key things to know about the 2020 Census:

  • Every NC resident who responds brings back $1,823 per year to our state.
  • Census results are used to fund programs that impact schools, roads, emergency services, disaster and pandemic recovery, healthcare, childcare, senior care, food assistance, public transportation, economic development, housing programs and more.
  • The 2020 Census also helps North Carolina get accurate representation in Congress, including potential for an additional seat.

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce is preparing to welcome new teachers to the Vance County area. The schools include Vance County Public Schools, Henderson Collegiate, Crossroads Christian School, Kerr-Vance Academy and Vance Charter School.

Approximately 140 new teachers will be welcomed to the area this year. The H-V Chamber is looking for donations from local business owners to pack into bags for these teachers. Suggested items include pens, pencils, pads, hand sanitizer, coupons/discount cards, key chains, etc.

The deadline to donate items has been extended to Friday, July 17.
