Henderson Man Sentenced for Receipt of Firearm While Under Indictment

United States Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr. announced that today in federal court, United States District Judge James C. Dever, III sentenced TYQUEL ALSTON, 19, of Henderson, North Carolina to 54 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release.

ALSTON was named in an Indictment filed on May 16, 2018, charging him with receipt of a firearm while under indictment. On August 7, 2018, ALSTON pled guilty to that charge.

On May 9, 2018, ALSTON was pulled over leaving a known drug area by law enforcement officers with the Henderson Police Department. ALSTON was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed when law enforcement initiated the traffic stop. Officers could smell marijuana in his car and subsequently searched the car. Under the passenger seat officers found a Leinad Inc., Model M-11, 9mm pistol with an extended magazine. The magazine was loaded with 16 rounds. ALSTON is a prohibited possessor of firearms because he was under Indictment for Trafficking in Heroin, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Possession of a Handgun by a Minor. Those charges were then pending in the Vance County Superior Court.

The Court granted the Government’s request for an upward departure in the defendant’s sentence because ALSTON was likewise under indictment for his participation in a drive-by shooting that occurred on May 25, 2017. During that shooting, an unintended victim, a pregnant 17-year-old female, was shot in the leg when one of the bullets went into her home that was located across the street from the shooting location. ALSTON previously threatened his girlfriend with firearms in March and May 2018. On both occasions his girlfriend reported to police that ALSTON pointed a firearm at her and threatened to kill her during a domestic dispute. The indictment related to this shooting was pending in Vance County Superior Court at the time he possessed the weapon that was the subject of the federal charges.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. Since 2017 the United States Department of Justice has reinvigorated the PSN program and has targeted violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.

That effort has been implemented through the Take Back North Carolina Initiative of The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina. This initiative emphasizes the regional assignment of federal prosecutors to work with law enforcement and District Attorney’s Offices on a sustained basis in those communities to reduce the violent crime rate, drug trafficking, and crimes against law enforcement.

The investigation of this case was conducted by the Henderson Police Department as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Charity Wilson.

Davis, of Hamilton St. in Henderson, Arrested on Numerous Drug Charges

On January 23, 2019, members of the Henderson Police Department Special Operations Division along with the Special Response Team executed a search warrant at the residence of 221 Hamilton St. in Henderson, NC.

During the execution of the search warrant over 30 grams of marijuana packaged for distribution, cocaine, 70 dosage units of heroin, 8 Ecstasy pills, over $800 in US currency and five firearms, along with several rounds of ammunition, were located and seized.

Peter Anthony Davis AKA “Tony,” 58, of 221 Hamilton St. in Henderson, NC was arrested and charged. He was charged with PWIMSD SCH. I, PWIMSD SCH. II, Manufacturing Schedule I, Manufacturing Schedule II, Felony Possession of Schedule I, Felony Possession of Schedule II, Maintaining a Vehicle/Dwelling, Firearm by Felon x5 and Felony PWIMSD Controlled Substance within 1000 ft of a child care center.

His bond was set in the amount of $250,000 secured. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 5, 2019.

Henderson Police Chief Marcus Barrow Talks Crime, Local Collaborations

Henderson Police Chief Marcus Barrow was on Thursday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to discuss his collaboration with other law enforcement departments as well as to provide some reassuring statistics related to crime in the local area.

Barrow, who has been involved with various divisions within the Henderson Police Department for the last 20 years, said his long-standing working relationship and friendship with newly elected Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame further assists the collaboration between the two offices.

“The Sheriff and I have had a good relationship – a friendship – since I started working here in 1998,” Barrow said. “We have a mutual respect for one another and our collaborations [since Brame became sheriff] are just like we picked up where we left off.”

The two meet weekly to discuss the goings-on in their respective divisions, though Barrow admits “sometimes we just talk about life and provide that support to each other.”

Both Barrow and Brame have disclosed to WIZS that they also have a good working relationship with Mike Waters, district attorney for the 9th Judicial District which includes Vance, Granville, Franklin, Warren and Person counties.

“I’ve had a close relationship with DA Waters since the onset. I made it a priority to get to know him and to be in his office as much as possible.”

Since Waters’ time as DA, Barrow said has seen a noticeable increase in both the collaboration with detectives and departments and the number of cases tried. “We are making some really good decisions on whether cases need to stay here locally in the state court system or go federal.”

According to Barrow, the recent increase in homicide convictions alone shows that cases are being tried more effectively. “I think our numbers show that we are tough on crime. Our use of the federal system proves that we are extremely tough on crime.”

In 2018, Barrow reports that the area had 39 federal indictments and 47 executed drug search warrants. “I think they are going to bust those drug numbers wide open this year. We don’t report on all of them because they are not all so news-worthy, but I believe [the drug unit] has executed 7-8 so far this year.”

The two larger HPD drug busts that have been in the news recently include arrests made at residents on Hamilton and State Street in Henderson. Both involved various drug charges including possession of cocaine, heroin and Ecstasy in addition to the seizure of money and weapons.

While such news can make residents worry about the safety of the community, Barrow said that crime rates are actually at a 25-year low, with 2017 being the lowest year on recent record.

When looking at statistics, Barrow said it is important to remember that while crime is often unpredictable, high crime areas are often known and “hot-spot mapped” to ensure officers are spending their time where they can best keep residents safe.

Barrow also said that crime, especially crime sprees that occur within days of each other such as break-ins, are often related and can usually be traced back to the same 1-2 suspects.

When asked if he personally felt safe in the community, Barrow responded “absolutely.” He elaborated by saying that he moved his mother, a life-long resident of Zebulon, to Henderson last year and would not have done so if he did not feel she would be safe.

Upon his recommendation, Barrow’s sister also moved to the area and is now a teacher in the school system.

Encouraged by the strengthened collaborations between law enforcement offices, decreases in crime levels and the growth of Henderson’s business segment, Barrow said he is glad to call Henderson home.

“I’m proud of this city; I love this place!”

Cocaine, Heroin Among Drugs Seized at State St. Residence

On January 15, 2019, members of the Henderson Police Department Special Operations Division along with the Special Response Team executed a search warrant at the residence of 819 State St., Henderson, NC.

During the execution of the search warrant over 1,500 Xanax bars, 271 grams of marijuana, 2.9 grams of raw heroin, 28 grams of cocaine, 81 dosage units of heroin, 22 Ecstasy pills, over $3,000 in US Currency, miscellaneous paraphernalia/manufacturing supplies and five firearms along with several rounds of ammunition were located and seized.

Jamey Ameche Owens, 47, of 819 State St., Henderson, NC was arrested and charged. He was charged with Trafficking Cocaine x2, Trafficking Heroin x2, PWIMSD Heroin, PWIMSD Cocaine, PWIMSD Marijuana, PWIMSD SCH. IV, PWIMSD SCH. I, Manufacturing Schedule I, Manufacturing Schedule II, Manufacturing Schedule VI, Possession of Heroin, Possession of Cocaine, Felony Possession of Marijuana, Felony Possession of Schedule IV, Maintaining a Vehicle/Dwelling x2, Firearm by Felon x5, and Felony Alter/Remove Gun Serial Number.

His bond was set in the amount of $500,000 secured. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 28, 2019.

DWI Suspected in Wreck Involving Henderson Police Car, Two Other Vehicles

At approximately 6:13 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, a Henderson Police Department vehicle and two other vehicles were struck at the intersection of Dabney Drive and Beckford Drive in Henderson.

According to Trooper J.A. Thomas with the NCSHP, a gray Ford driven by Mark Sizemore, age 48, of Oxford was headed northbound on Dabney Drive when he struck the three vehicles waiting to turn left onto Beckford Drive.

Sizemore was arrested under suspicion of DWI at the scene. His bond was set at $3,000.

The collision was investigated by the NCSHP. According to Trooper Thomas, no serious injuries were reported, though several occupants received treatment at nearby Maria Parham Health.

Foot Chase Breaks Outs When Suspect Flees Vance Co. Magistrate’s Office

WIZS News was sending out a Facebook Live video this afternoon about record rainfall in the local area when suddenly part of a local law enforcement foot chase unfolded in front of the camera. WIZS staff witnessed at least two deputies pursuing the suspect on foot with their guns drawn.

According to an eyewitness, who was standing outside the Vance County Magistrate Office, a man fled the Magistrate’s Office on foot at about 3:10 p.m. on Friday, December 28.  According to the eyewitness, the suspect put himself into the position of nearly being struck by a Henderson Police Department vehicle while he was fleeing across Chestnut Street.

The eyewitness’ description of the suspect turned out to be spot on. WIZS News chose not to show the suspect on video as he was being returned to the Magistrate’s Office a short time later. He was, however, in plain view and easily seen.

Before 3:20 p.m. on Friday, the suspect was taken back into the Magistrate’s Office, meaning his flight, the pursuit and his capture and return all happened in less than 10 minutes of elapsed time. As it was, a uniformed person with the Vance County Sheriff’s Office was seen bringing the suspect into the Magistrate’s Office.

Shortly after the incident, Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame confirmed that the suspect was Orrie Williams who was being brought in to the Magistrate’s Office by his bail bondsman to review his bond. Upon hearing that his bond was set at $40,000, Williams fled the scene.

Williams was originally brought in for failure to appear on two outstanding warrants for arrest, including charges of Driving While Impaired, Breaking and Entering and Felony Larceny After Breaking and Entering.

Brame told WIZS News by phone that he was pleased with the “quick response and a good job by the deputies of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office.”

‘Shop With A Cop’ Deemed a Community Success Story

On Thursday, December 20, 2018, members of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, Henderson Police Department, Vance-Granville Community College Campus Police, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol participated in the annual Shop with a Cop event at the Wal-Mart in Henderson.

Officers were paired with approximately 44 children and given a budget with which to purchase items for those children. Thanks to donations and sponsorships, many local children are having a Christmas to remember this year.

In addition to $6,000 raised in a fundraiser sponsored by the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce and Maria Parham Health in November, the Vance County Department of Social Services plays a large role in making the annual event a success.

Vance Co. DSS partners with local law enforcement, donates money towards Shop With A Cop and selects the children who participate in the experience through a referral process.

Children that were not selected for Shop With A Cop were matched up with sponsors who contacted the agency. This year, over 100 children will be serviced through sponsorships.

 

Habanero Grill Arsonist Caught on Camera; Reward Offered for Info. Leading to Arrest

In conjunction with the Henderson Fire Department and with assistance from the SBI, the Henderson Police Department is seeking the assistance of the public in the investigation of a Breaking and Entering, Larceny, and Arson case.

In the early morning hours of Monday, December 17, an individual broke the window out of Habanero Grill, located at 116 Parham Road, and entered the business. Once inside, the suspect broke into a small safe and took the contents. Prior to exiting the business, a fire was started that caused tremendous damage to the local business.

A similar fire destroyed Mazatlán Mexican Restaurant on November 27, but cause and origin are still under investigation by the previously mentioned agencies.

Below is a snapshot of the suspect inside the business of Habanero Grill. If anyone has information or an anonymous tip, they are encouraged to contact the Henderson Police Department at (252) 438-4141 or Crime Stoppers at (252) 492-1925. A cash reward of up to $2,000 is offered for information leading to the arrest of this individual.

Businesses are strongly encouraged to set their alarms and or install alarms to assist in notifying authorities of crimes in progress. Vigilance is essential to these cases.

Reverse Raffle Raises $6,000 for ‘Shop With A Cop’ Event

Thanks to the support of the local community and area businesses, it’s time to “Shop With A Cop!”

A total of $6,000 was raised during a Reverse Raffle held at Henderson Country Club in November. Over the next two weeks, area law enforcement officers will take several underprivileged children shopping for Christmas with the money raised.

The event is brought to the community by the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, Henderson Police Department and the Vance County Sheriff’s Department. Maria Parham Health is the presenting sponsor for this event.

‘Cops on Top’ Surpasses Fundraising Goal for Special Olympics of NC

Chick-fil-A of Henderson, the Henderson Police Department, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and other community organizations once again teamed up for the annual “Cops on Top” Fundraiser for the Special Olympics of NC.

Held at Chick-fil-A on Thursday, December 6, the all-day event raised $2,291 for Special Olympics, surpassing the goal fundraiser organizers previously set of $2,000.

Lt. Jessica West with the HPD told WIZS staff that the event would not have been a success without the help and support of the entire community.

Abidan Shah, pastor of Clearview Church praised the police and fire departments and acknowledged Chick-fil-A owner/operator Josh Towne for hosting the annual event.

All money raised will go directly to Special Olympics of NC.
