CPOH Shelter Making Progress Toward May Move; Many Ways For Community To Help

The transformation from church facility to men’s shelter continues at the former City Road Methodist Church location, and there are many opportunities for the community to help in advance of a hopeful May move-in date.

An immediate need is for groups to provide or sponsor meals for the next couple of months, according to information from Community Partners of Hope, especially for dates leading up to and including Easter Sunday – Most needed dates are Mar. 28, Mar. 29 and Mar. 31 (Easter Sunday).

Sign up HERE with this link if you or your organization can provide a meal for the men at the shelter.

There are numerous other ways to help:

  • Replenish snack items – PopTarts or breakfast bars, peanut butter crackers, bags of single-size chips and other items individually wrapped items that the men can take with them during the day
  • Laundry pods

Visit THIS LINK HERE for dropoff instructions for donated items.

Church groups, civic organizations and others can provide help through service projects – here are just a few tasks that need to be completed:

  • Help assemble and paint 3 new bunkbeds
  • Help disassemble, move, re-assemble and touch up 5 existing beds
  • Help paint exterior doors and windows (this can happen after the move)
  • Help move items from old shelter to new – washer/dryer, shelving, supplies and more
  • Clean bathrooms, carpet, etc. in the sanctuary wing to make it ready to lease to a congregation who needs a church to call home
  • Help arrange supplies in the new shelter

Please call 252.432.9494 to sign up to help.

Community Partners of Hope also needs the following items – free would be great, but at least for purchase at a reasonable price:

  • 8 single mattresses for bunk beds
  • Heavy duty washer/dryer – we will have 2 sets in the new shelter
  • Folding cots to use with air mattresses (need 12)
  • Air mattresses – easy inflatable – we have a pump (need 8)
  • TV monitor for security system – prefer 42-inch

If you or someone you know has experience with technology, the shelter needs help selecting, purchasing and installing the following:

  • WiFi router – mesh system – probably 3 nodes – need help with research
  • Electronic combination door locks – WiFi enabled (6 or 8) – need help researching best brand to purchase

And, as always, financial donations are much-needed and welcome. The 365 Dream Team campaign is one way to sustain the shelter ministry with $1/day contributions – the goal is to get 365 donors to become members of the 365 Dream Team. Learn more at www.cp-hope.org.

Church-Turned Men’s Shelter Inching Toward Reality

The word “sanctuary” is defined as a sacred place. In church terms, it’s the area near the altar. The term is also used to mean “refuge” or “haven.” As the vision to transform a former church property into a men’s shelter gains momentum, area supporters may find a way to have a sacred space continue to provide a safe place for men in need.

Community Partners of Hope and others united to make the men’s shelter a reality are on a crusade to raise $350,000 to make the former City Road Methodist Church property into a year-round men’s shelter.

Jane King told WIZS News that Community Partners of Hope is making progress in the fundraising, with commitments and pledges coming in for construction and furnishings budgets.

“This is such an exciting project and I am sure we will eventually reach our goal,” King stated.

With strong community support from individuals and from churches, King said the contributions are mounting, but such campaigns rarely move quickly.

They’ve sent mailers to Chamber members and emails to supporters requesting donations.

“We’ve also been making face-to-face appeals to those in the community who we think have the wherewithal and community spirit to give generously,” King added.  She said The City of Henderson has pledged $50,000 and there’s another $50,000 donation ready to be pledged once the first $300,000 comes in.

Union Chapel Church of Kittrell is partnering with Tony’s Automotive to hold a “Cruise In” on Sept. 9 to benefit the project. Last year’s event netted $2,400, she said. This year’s proceeds will be matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor, she added.

Community Partners Of Hope Seeks Donations For Men’s Shelter

Community Partners of Hope is reaching out this holiday season to ask for donations to provide to the men who come for respite and a warm night’s sleep at the men’s shelter.

The shelter needs snack items like breakfast bars, single-serving sizes of snacks, chips and other individually wrapped cakes and cookies, as well as cases of bottled water, tea or sodas, preferably 12-ounce cans or bottles.

Other favorites include Pop-Tarts, tins of Vienna sausage and fruit cups.

In addition to the food items, the shelter needs paper towels, tall kitchen trash bags (13-gallon size) Clorox cleanup spray, laundry detergent (pods, please) and extra-large black garbage bags (39+-gallon size).

“For some reason we are not receiving as many supply donations as we have in the past and it’s a struggle for our shelter managers,” according to a newsletter from the Community Partners of Hope.

Donations may be dropped off at First Presbyterian Church Monday-Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or call 252.432.9494 to arrange a drop-off time. Cases of bottled water may be left outside the shelter, but other items should be received by someone at the church during the designated times.

The shelter currently has enough hand sanitizer, toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste on hand to share with the men, and they have plenty of bedding. Shelter staff are not accepting used clothing or food that needs to be heated.

There are opportunities for providing meals to the men who come to the shelter. To learn more, click THIS LINK.

Men’s Shelter Open; Donations Needed

The local men’s shelter opened a month ago – one month earlier than last year. That puts Delthine Watson and others who work with Community Partners of Hope closer to their goal of being able to provide emergency housing year-round instead of just during the winter months.

In a recent update, Watson, who is CPOH’s community network specialist, reported that that the shelter has served 14 different men. “One of our guests has been recommended to move to Hope House and his application is being processed now,” Watson said.

But the shelter still needs support from the community, and Watson said there are plenty of ways to help – from signing up to provide a meal to dropping off cases of bottled water and other snacks and even volunteering to staff the shelter when it’s occupied.
“We’ve had amazing responses for meals, but we do need several meals this month,” Watson said. Use THIS LINK  to sign up to provide a meal. The greatest needs are this weekend – Nov. 12 and 13, Monday, Nov. 21 and Friday, Nov. 25.

Volunteers who can spend the night should sign up two weeks in advance, she noted. Volunteers are needed for Monday and Thursday nights; this allows paid staff to be scheduled if there’s not enough coverage.

Volunteering overnight provides an opportunity to see the shelter in action and helpsgreatly with expenses, Watson said. Consider volunteering individually or forming a two-person team, she said.

“We are taking extreme cautions to prevent the spread of COVID, but we understand that some are still hesitant to volunteer.   Masks are required at all times, hand-washing and sanitizer are emphasized, and of course we maintain safe distance as well,” Watson said.

Details for shelter volunteers are in the signup (CLICK HERE). Watson said she appreciates the coverage that two volunteers from First United Methodist provide for one Thursday night each month and challenges other church groups to consider doing the same for a different night.

Of course, monetary donations always are welcomed, but other things they need to create “go bags” for the clients included bottled water, tea, soft drinks and underwear in all sizes but most especially L, XL, 2X and 3X.

Watson said a complete list of needs is available at www.cp-hope.org.

Please do NOT take donations to the shelter. The shelter is closed during the day and staff is busy during the evening hours helping the men who are there for the night.

Instead, call 252.432.9494 to arrange delivery.

Watson currently is working on grant applications, coordinating with other agencies for partnerships and speaking with churches and civic groups. Call or email her to schedule a talk with a community group at 919.339.1462 or  specialist.cpoh@gmail.com.

Men’s Shelter Opening One Month Early On Path To 12-Month Operation

The local men’s shelter has gotten the green light to open its doors for an extra month, putting the group a step closer to realizing its dream of being open year-round for those in need.

The shelter, based at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Henderson, is an outreach of Community Partners of Hope.

In previous years, the shelter was open from November through March, with the hope of being able to expand services and there is a campaign underway now to raise the $133,225 needed to make the dream a reality. To date, more than $15,000  has been raised.

Visit the Dream Team Fundraiser Link Here.

Information in the recent CPOH newsletter stated that Darryl Jones will continue as shelter manager and Josh Stokes will manage weekend duties, but the shelter continues to need volunteers to partner with paid staff to keep things running smoothly. The group is looking at the possibility of adding another paid overnight supervisor.

Community Network Specialist Delthine Watson is pursuing grant opportunities, as well as possible collaboration with other agencies and partners. Watson is available to speak to church and civic groups to share the mission and vision of CPOH. Contact her at specialist.cpoh@gmail.com or 919.339.1462 to learn more.

April 2 Event To Honor Staff, Volunteers Of Local Men’s Shelter

The public is invited to join Community Partners of Hope, Inc. Saturday as it spotlights the efforts of staff and volunteers of the men’s shelter during an “end of season” gathering.

The program is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with coffee and light refreshments in the parish hall of First Presbyterian Church, according to Dr. Ron Cava, senior minister at the First Baptist Church in Henderson and Community Partners of Hope board member.

The First Presbyterian Church is located at 222 Young St., Henderson. Although the event will be held upstairs from the shelter area, attendees are asked to enter from Young Street.

“No matter what level support you have provided, we hope you will join us (as) we honor our staff and volunteers, provide an update on our services, introduce our board members, kick off the new fundraiser and share prayers for the community and the world,” according to information received at WIZS News.

Currently, the shelter operates from November through March. But if Cava and his colleagues have their way, the 365 Dream Team campaign can help to expand the time that the shelter is open.

“We’re looking for backers to sustain a year-round operation,” Cava said in a telephone interview. Cava alluded to the story of the widow’s mite and said any pledge is acceptable.

“I appreciate the people who have deep pockets,” he said, “but what really makes the world go ‘round…is a dollar at a time.”

Through pledges and contributions, Cava said he hoped that the men’s shelter would be able to operate all year.

Community Partners Of Hope Has New Community Network Specialist

The newest staff member at Community Partners of Hope, Inc. of Henderson, may be new to the job, but she certainly is not new to the community. Delthine Watson has lived and worked in Vance County for the past 25 years, and she brings a passion for the local outreach ministry to the newly created position.

Watson, a native of Warren County, is the community network specialist for CPOH. The position is designed to help the organization expand services and outreach to homeless men in the community. Watson said she wants to take things to a new level. “I want to be instrumental in improving my community,” she said in a press release to WIZS News.

CPOH Volunteer Coordinator Jane King said, “Watson has supported our ministry for many years volunteering wherever needed and organizing her church to supply meals on a regular basis. She has a heart for service to go along with her experience in helping people navigate hard times.”

Watson understands the challenges of communities with limited resources, said Pastor Joseph Ratliff of Shiloh Baptist Church. “Yet, she knows local, state, and federal possibilities for additional resources,” Ratliff said.

Pastor Matthew Copple of First Presbyterian Church explains that CPOH’s decision to form this new role speaks loudly about the organization’s priority to expand its reach to the men it serves and the community at large. “Her [Watson’s] voice will remind our leaders and community organizations that a community’s success is defined by how it cares for its most vulnerable members,” said Copple.

Board Chairman Mike Holland has set a bold goal to relocate the emergency shelter to a location that will sustain year-round operation and space for education and job training. Under his leadership, the board of directors – coupled with Watson’s expertise – looks forward to a banner year for CPOH in 2022.

Watson said she dreams of eliminating homelessness altogether, but until that time, there is plenty more work to do by providing hot meals and temporary lodging.

Board member Ron Cava said the board is pleased to have Watson in the new position. Her education and experience in various social services and counseling uniquely qualify her for this position, he said. “We are pleased to have someone of Delthine’s character, experience, and passion for service with the homeless to join our team.” Cava said.

The community ministry serves Henderson by safely sheltering homeless men, providing them warmth, nourishment, guidance, and encouragement. Since its opening 12 years ago, improvements to the shelter and management have increased capacity to move men from chronic homelessness to more hopeful potential for housing. CPOH seasonally operates a men’s homeless shelter November through March, providing service to 60-80 men each season. Its companion service, Hope House, offers temporary residence for up to six men who are transitioning out of homelessness.

In her new role, Watson will work closely with the board of directors and other CPOH staff to provide support, coordination, guidance, and visibility for services offered to homeless men. Through her networking with regional agencies and organizations, CPOH will enhance the potential for each homeless man to find healing, work and housing.

Community Partners Of Hope, Inc. Looking To Hire Community Network Specialist

Community Partners of Hope, Inc. is hiring a part-time “community network specialist” that board members hope will evolve into a full-time executive director role.

CPOH operates Hope House and the men’s homeless shelter in Henderson, and board chair Ronald S. Cava said an ideal candidate would be someone who can focus attention on promotion, funding and community networking rather than day-to-day operations.

“The right person…will be able to move us exponentially toward achieving our vision of providing 360 support for our clients through a full-time, year-round shelter operation,” Cava said in a press statement.

The community network specialist position is a 20-hour per week position that involves collaboration with other agencies, businesses, law enforcement and area congregations to provide support, guidance and visibility for services to homeless men in the area.

Candidates must have at least a high school diploma and experience as a supervisor or manager; candidates with experience working with non-profits or social services connected with at-risk populations receive priority consideration.

In addition to community networking, the job description includes public relations, managing staff schedules and training, pursuing grant opportunities and coordinating program goals and progress for clients.

Community Partners of Hope Provide Men’s Shelter Updates

By: Kelly Bondurant, Freelance Writer for Hire

Community Partners of Hope, operators of the local men’s homeless shelter currently located in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in Henderson, have recently shared shelter updates with WIZS.

Shelter Updates:

Kaine Riggan, Henderson-Vance Downtown Development Commission director, is currently searching Henderson for a suitable space to meet the shelter’s long-term needs. Anyone with a suggestion for a location is asked to contact Riggan via email at kaineriggan@gmail.com.

Community Partners of Hope is excited to announce that a new fundraising portal has been created and can be viewed at https://www.youcaring.com/communitypartnersofhopehendersonmensshelter-1009964.

Donations are needed for day-to-day shelter operation expenses. The organization plans to begin a capital campaign once the new shelter location has been identified.

Shelter managers Darryl Jones and Kenny Blackwell have recently taken over the duty of scheduling meals and supervision. All meals for the rest of the season have been scheduled; however, the shelter is facing a shortage of male volunteers willing to work the welcome or the overnight shifts.

The shelter reports that there are paid staff on duty who can run the operation without the assistance of volunteers, but volunteers are essential in providing backup, especially in the case of an illness or emergency.

Volunteers are welcomed even if they can only commit to helping for one night. On-the-job training will be provided by a shelter manager or night manager. Interested volunteers should contact the shelter manager at (252) 820-0701. The shelter keeps an updated calendar on their website at www.cp-hope.org. The latest schedule is listed under the calendar tab.

Hope House Updates:

Four men from the shelter have recently moved into the Hope House-a transitional housing unit offering the next level of assistance to qualifying men.

In order to transition into the Hope House, men at the shelter must meet the following qualifications: demonstrate they can follow rules and live peacefully with others, have a job or be close to securing a job, pass a drug screening and have a mentor.

The Hope House is currently in need of male or female volunteers to mentor residents. Mentors are asked to:

  • Maintain weekly contact with assigned resident-a minimum of one in-person meeting each month
  • Encourage goal setting, both long-term and short-term
  • Review goals and the steps taken to accomplish goals
  • Be available to listen
  • Inform the Mentor Coordinator of progress towards the completion of goals
  • Should setbacks occur – inform the Mentor Coordinator immediately and provide resident’s plan to get back on track
  • Communicate with the House Manager on issues that pertain to occupancy

Healthcare Initiative:

Thanks to a generous grant from the Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, Community Partners of Hope is able to offer healthcare services to shelter occupants.

Monies will support CPOH Health Interventions, providing primary health care screening and treatment for homeless men through the emergency shelter and transitional house.

Treatment will focus on hypertension, high cholesterol, substance abuse, prostate issues and diabetes. Strategic partners in this initiative include:

  • Chief Marcus Barrow, Henderson Police Department
  • Brian Short, Henderson/Vance Emergency Services
  • James Kenney, Beckford Medical Center
  • Jeanne Harrison, Alliance Rehabilitative Care
  • Lisa Harrison and Shauna Guthrie, Granville-Vance Health Department
  • Krystal Harris, Vance County Department of Social Services
  • Lori Giang, CEO/Executive Director and Nicole Banahene, Director of Partner Relations, NC MedAssist
  • George Daye, Raemac Transportation

Community Partners of Hope staff will coordinate the care offered and maintain records to demonstrate that CPOH is having a measurable impact on the health of the community.
