TownTalk: Bee Jubilee Coming Saturday

The 7th annual Bee Jubilee will be held Saturday, June 24 at the Granville County Expo Center. Whether you’re an experienced beekeeper or just like the taste of honey, the Bee Jubilee has something for everyone – from educational workshops and tasty treats to just plain ol’ fun.

Christi Henthorn is one of the event organizers and she said as the event has grown over the years, the Granville County Beekeepers group strives to focus on local vendors and artisans.

“Everything is homegrown, handmade bee and agriculture-related,” Henthorn told WIZS’s Bill Harris on Monday’s TownTalk.

“We have some really awesome vendors,” who will have all sorts of bee-themed inventory for sale. The Bee Jubilee will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a food truck rodeo on site as well, so participants will be able to enjoy some food and beverages while they’re walking among the vendors.

This year, the event will feature a Honey Show, and Henthorn encourages anyone who uses honey or other bee products in cooking or baking to enter. She said there will be mead (a beverage made with honey), as well as beeswax entered in the honey show.

Anyone can enter the honey show, but Henthorn said entries should contain local honey.

A list of rules is available on the event Facebook page.

There will be an auction inside the expo center to help raise funds to establish an endowed professorship in apiculture at N.C. State University.

There are more than 80 county beekeepers’ associations across the state and they’re all working in concert with the state beekeepers group to help raise more than $600,000 needed to make the professorship a reality.

“We are on that track to get that money over the next several years,” Henthorn said.

Auction items should be brought to the expo center no later than Friday evening; entries for the honey show should be delivered between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

One lucky raffle ticket holder will win a year’s worth of local honey. The winner will be announced about 2:30 p.m. before the Bee Jubilee concludes.

Several workshops will be offered, including a beginner bee workshop at 9:30 a.m., followed by a workshop presented by a group of Master Gardeners about planting your landscapes with pollinators in mind.

The Facebook event page will be updated this week with the latest and newest information about the upcoming Bee Jubilee.

TownTalk: Buzz Into The Bee Jubilee June 26 at Granville Expo Center

Get up close and personal with bees – without getting stung – at the 5th annual Bee Jubilee Saturday in Oxford.

Christi Henthorn, president of the Granville County Beekeepers Association, and event organizer said there will be something for everyone at the event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Granville County Expo Center, 4185 Hwy 15 South in Oxford.

Henthorn told John C. Rose on Thursday’s Town Talk that, in addition to supporting local vendors and bee enthusiasts, the Bee Jubilee is an opportunity to learn about these mighty pollinators.

“The vast majority of our food is either directly or indirectly related to pollinated plants,” Henthorn said. That funny-looking cucumber in your summer garden or the ill-shaped zucchini is more than likely the result of inadequate pollination, she said.

Bees are not the only pollinators, she noted, adding that bats and birds, butterflies and even annoying wasps are pollinators. And just because it buzzes does not make it a honeybee, she said. Bumblebees and carpenter bees may be pollinators, but they are not honeybees, she added.

The local vendors all have a focus of bee- an agriculture-related items, Henthorn said. There will be a silent auction and a live auction that starts at noon. See photos of the items that will be auctioned on the beekeepers’ Facebook page.

The Oxford Farmers Market will set up at the Expo Center on Saturday as well, she said. So If you go to their normal market spot downtown, they won’t be there. There will be inflatables for the kids to play on and half a dozen or more food vendors, from gourmet coffee to frozen treats.

Bee documentaries will be shown indoors, and vendors will be  outdoors under the covered arena space. The Granville Gardeners will be selling plants as well.

“Make sure when you come you mill around the whole facility,” Henthorn said.

Most counties in North Carolina have a beekeepers organization, she said, and it’s important to call a beekeeper if you find a swarm of bees on your property.

“Granville County beekeepers has a ‘swarm patrol,’ a group of beekeepers who are trained to capture swarms and remove them from wherever they are – in a tree or in a house. These people are comfortable around bees and they are willing to remove them safely. The hotline is 919.892.3670.

On behalf of the Granville County Beekeepers Association (GCBA), you are invited to the 3rd Annual Bee Jubilee on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Granville County Expo Center in Oxford, NC.

As usual, the Bee Jubilee is held in conjunction with National Pollinator Week, June 18-24.

The Bee Jubilee is a day-long event filled with bee and pollinator-related speakers and demonstrations, local arts and handmade crafts, non-profits, children’s activities, silent auction, honey, North Carolina-grown produce and more!

The Oxford Farmers Market will be joining us and we will have two honey extraction demonstrations.

There are kids activities and over 65 vendors offering information or selling homegrown, handmade, bee or agriculture items. We will have a silent auction and draw the winner of our Year of Honey Raffle.

Our focus is on homegrown, handmade, and local. And of course, we love bees, agriculture and nature too! We can’t make it happen without you!

We have made three major changes for this year’s event:

1- Parking – We will have parking attendants and marked areas to improve traffic flow and safety.

2- Outside space – We will be making use of the livestock arena behind the building. This is a large covered area and use of it will provide a more comfortable and safer vendor and attendee experience than last year. We will have the food trucks and trailers remain in the front of the building.

3- Improved sponsorship opportunities

We hope you join us for a vibrant and fun-filled Bee Jubilee event, to be held at the Granville County Expo Center, located at 4605 US-15, Oxford.

Please call Bee Jubilee Coordinator Christi Henthron at 907.738.9047 or email granvillebeejubilee@gmail.com with any questions, comments or ideas. We are hoping to make 2018 the best Bee Jubilee yet!
