Registration Underway for Vance Co. Special Olympics Volleyball

Vance County’s Special Olympics Volleyball will play on Tuesday nights from March 26 through May 28, 2019, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Aycock Rec. Center.

Applicants must pre-register by Friday, March 8, 2019.

The purpose of the Vance County Special Olympics North Carolina is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Aycock Rec. Center to Offer Beginning Yoga Classes

Beginning Yoga classes will be held in the Aycock Recreation Center’s Multi-Purpose Room on Thursday evenings from 6:15 to  7 p.m. Classes begin Thursday, January 3 and end Thursday, March 28, 2018.

These sessions are based on basic Yoga techniques that inspire physical, mental and spiritual peace from within through balance, stretching and breathing.

Please bring your own Yoga mat.

The fee is $1 for members and $2 for non-members. Class instructor is Beryle Lewis.

Arthritis Exercise Class is a FREE low-impact, joint-safe program developed for people with arthritis. This class has been proven to decrease pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. This class is also suitable for every fitness level. 2019 Basketball Opening Ceremony: This is a recognition and celebration ceremony for our youth basketball players, teams, coaches and parents. Spring Youth Volleyball: This program is designed to teach the rules and skills of volleyball and to allow youth to demonstrate their skills in organized games. H-V Rec. & Parks Announces 2019 Winter Swim Lesson Schedule

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department announces its 2019 winter swim lesson schedule. Lessons will be held at the Aycock Recreation Center’s swimming pool each Saturday from January 5 – February 9, 2019.

Parent-Tot Swim Lessons (6 months – 3 years old) – This class introduces being in the water in a safe and friendly environment using games to learn basic swimming skills. Parents in the water with children.

Preschool Swim Lessons (3 – 5 years old) – This class introduces being in the water in a safe and friendly environment using games to learn basic swimming skills. Parents are not in the water with children.

Beginner Swim Lessons (5 – 13 years old) – This class teaches basic swimming skills.

Advance Swim Lessons (5 -14 years old) – This class includes gliding off the pool wall and rolling over onto front and back. A combination of arms and legs in stroke is required. This class will also introduce the breast and back stroke.

Adult Swim Lessons (14 years old and older) – This class teachers basic swimming skills.

Fee of $30 is due, along with completed registration form, by Thursday, January 3, 2019. Class instructor will be Tanya Edwards.

Participate in the 2019 Vance Co. Polar Plunge and be ‘Freezin’ For A Reason’

The Vance County Special Olympics 2019 Polar Plunge will be held at the Satterwhite Point Glasshouse on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. that morning; jump begins at 10:30 a.m. Inclement weather date will be Saturday, February 9, 2019.

The Polar Plunge is an event for courageous participants willing to jump into Kerr Lake in the middle of the winter, all to support and raise funds for the Special Olympics of Vance County.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with others.

All donations earned from the Polar Plunge will go to support local athletes. Individuals are required to collect a minimum of $30 to participate.

Prizes will be given for best costume (individual and team); most money raised (individual and team); and largest team.

Every participant will receive a t-shirt. There is a limit of 250 participants.

Henderson-Vance Rec. & Parks Gearing Up for 2019 Adult Basketball

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department announces the return of adult winter basketball for 2019. This league is designed for adults who enjoy the game of basketball. Games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday nights with game times depending on the number of teams that register.

Entry deadline is Thursday, January 31, 2019. $420 entry fee per team.

Each team will be guaranteed at least eight regular season games. A double elimination tournament will follow the end of the regular season.

Henderson Vance Rec. & Parks Collecting Items for ‘Shoebox Give-a-Way’

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department is partnering with local community groups to provide a post-Christmas “Shoebox Give-a-Way.”

We are soliciting items for ages 6-17 such as small toys, cards, unopened candy, pencils, shampoo, conditioner, pens, lotion, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, gloves, scarfs, books, combs and anything you are able to donate that will benefit these age groups.

We will also need shoe boxes as well. Deadline to receive these items will be on Friday, December 14, 2018, at 5 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center. This program will run in conjunction with the “Peace Toys for War Toys” Program held by the Outreach Unit.

Young Men to Hear From Experts on Goal Setting, Empowerment at ‘I Rise Summit’

Reach One Teach One, Inc. will host an “I Rise Summit” for young men ages 13 and over on Sunday, November 25, 2018, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Rd., Henderson. Dinner will be served.

Young men attending this free event will hear from subject-matter experts on goal setting, overcoming life obstacles and what empowerment means in 2018.
