On August 3, 2026, at approximately 2:47 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the 600 block of West Andrews Avenue following a report of a person lying in the roadway.
Officers with the Henderson Police Department arrived and located a 69-year-old male who was unresponsive. Personnel from Vance County Emergency Services and the Henderson Fire Department responded and attempted to render medical aid. The individual succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation determined that the pedestrian had been struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol also assisted with the investigation.
Following notification of his family late this evening, the deceased has been identified as 69-year-old Matt Sowets Kinard of Henderson.
The Henderson Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators are reviewing available evidence and additional information associated with the involved vehicle as part of that process. No charges have been filed at this time.
Out of respect for the families and individuals affected by this tragic incident, no additional identifying information regarding the involved parties is being released at this time.
