GCPS Plans “Watch” Event July 12 To See Images From Webb Telescope

The Webb telescope is set to send never-before-seen images of space back to Earth soon, and the scientific community – as well as folks on the ground in Granville County – are waiting and wondering what the giant telescope will reveal.

Planning for the design and successful launch of the James E. Webb Telescope has been years in the making, but now that it’s almost time for the instrument to send back full-color images of what it “sees,” scientists and others who have been closely monitoring its function can’t be exactly sure when they’ll be able to release those photos.

But Granville County Public Schools STEAM Coordinator Amy Rice is working with those experts to provide a special “watch” party at J.F. Webb High School on July 12. She knows the day, but the time is a little uncertain.

J.F. Webb is named for the father of James E. Webb, for whom the telescope is named. What better spot to host a watch party? Webb, the father, was a former schools superintendent in Granville County; his son, in 1961, became administrator of the newly formed NASA.

Rice told WIZS News that the event in Oxford on July 12 will include a virtual panel discussion during which time experts will discuss various aspects of the Webb mission. The panel discussion will begin at 6 p.m.

“Once NASA lets us know the time of the photo release, we will announce what time we will start live streaming the release of the photos,” Rice said in an email. On site will also be a group of science interns from nearby Shaw University to lead STEM-related interactive sessions for younger children that will be related to the work of the space telescope.

Interested in coming to the July 12 event? Please check https://www.gcs.k12.nc.us/ for updates on times for the photo release.

The Local Skinny! Business Spotlight: Satterwhite Pt. Marina

The season is heating up on Kerr Lake as warmer weather brings out boaters and campers, and that’s just fine for Scott and Catherine Hughes, owners of Satterwhite Point Marina and Rudd’s Creek Marina near Boydton, VA.

The Hughes family is celebrating 30 years at Satterwhite Point Marina, and Catherine told John C. Rose Thursday during the business spotlight feature of The Local Skinny! segment that they work hard to provide good service to folks visiting the lake and they strive to be good community partners.

“It’s hard to believe that Rudd’s Creek has been open for eight years,” she said, adding that husband Scott basically duplicated at Rudd’s Creek what he’d built at Satterwhite.

The marinas have boat storage options in wet slips and she said the hope is to have Drystack storage at the Virginia marina in the next year or so. Right now, that option is only at Satterwhite Point.

Both marinas have lakeside stores with discount marine supplies, lake gifts, signs, snacks and more.

“We always try to support the communities in Henderson and in Mecklenburg County, VA as well,” Hughes said, “ and we appreciate the support we get as well.” She said great employees, great customers and a great place to work make for a winning combination.

“We think we’re lucky to be able to be able to work right on the lake,” she said. “Sometimes it can be demanding or stressful, but the majority of the time, it’s just beautiful.”

S-Line Rail Project Gathering Steam As Progress Continues

If you want to learn more about the plans for the S-Line railroad and proposed stop in Henderson, or if you’d like to share your ideas about the project, please plan to come to a design workshop and open house on Tuesday, June 7 at McGregor Hall.

The workshop is open to the public any time between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the foyer of McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center at 201 Breckenridge St. and will focus on current plans for the S-Line in Henderson, according to Tracy Madigan, director of the Henderson-Vance County Downtown Development Commission. An open house will be held in the Farm Bureau Room of the Perry Memorial Library right next door from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The open house is a time for interested residents to provide input and ideas for developing a plan for the S-Line, a commuter rail line between Richmond, VA and Tampa,

About 95 miles of railway will run through the state, with proposed stops North Carolina’s S-Line project includes six other communities in addition to Henderson: Norlina, Franklinton, Youngsville, Wake Forest, Raleigh and Sanford.

A similar workshop and open house is scheduled for Thursday, June 16 at the Warrenton Armory Civic Center. The design workshop will be open between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.; the open house will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Local Skinny: KARTS Makes Getting From Here To There Easy

People use KARTS for a variety of reasons – to get to work or doctor’s appointments, to go food shopping, keep dialysis appointments and even get to the local community college campus. Whatever the reason, KARTS buses crisscross the four-county area to provide transportation to people who need it.

And that’s something that make KARTS Executive Director Irene Johnson happy.

Each day, schedulers make appointments for residents and the Kerr Area Regional Transportation Authority buses are dispatched throughout the counties they serve.

“We are here to serve the community,” Johnson told John C. Rose on Thursday’s The Local Skinny! “We do so much transportation now,” she said. She said a daily tally could be in the hundreds of routes.

The buses run hundreds of routes each week and even operate on Saturdays to transport people to their jobs or to their dialysis appointments. Drivers are on the road as early as 2:30 in the morning to make sure folks make their 4:30 a.m. appointments at area dialysis centers.

But Johnson has a suggestion for anyone thinking about calling for a ride from KARTS: Call as soon as possible. “As soon as you know you have a trip planned, we need you to call as early as possible,” she said.

And while it’s not mass transit like city buses or subway trains, KARTS buses are considered public transportation, Johnson noted. And for that reason, the use of masks is recommended. And even though the COVID-19 restrictions have eased, she assures riders that the buses are thoroughly cleaned to help keep everyone as safe as possible. There also are cameras with live feeds mounted inside and outside the buses for an additional layer of safety

The last couple of years have been hard on everyone, but especially hard on those without a means of transportation. Johnson said she has enjoyed seeing those folks who found themselves confined at home being able to get out and enjoy life without having to worry about transportation.

The main dispatch center is in Henderson on Ross Mill Road, but each county has its own fleet of buses that remain in those counties, she explained.

And KARTS is not immune to the labor shortage that everyone is talking about. If you’re looking for a job, KARTS is always looking for drivers. Retirees who may just want a part-time job could be prime candidates, she said, inviting others to join the hard-working staff of drivers.

“They are dedicated and want to make sure people get (to their destinations) safely,” Johnson said.

The Local Skinny! Around Old Granville: Doing The Numbers For Memorial Day

There are about 110,000 veterans of World War II still alive in the United States, and at least one of them lives in Granville County, according to Mark Pace. He and Bill Harris discussed war military service veterans as part of the Around Old Granville segment of The Local Skinny! Thursday.

The average age of the WWII veteran is 93, Pace said. Several veterans have died in the past year, he said, along with a couple more in Vance County.

It’s sometimes difficult to determine exact numbers, Pace said, but his research has shown that there are 20 soldiers from the Old Granville area who died in the American Revolution. At least 450 (but probably more like 550) who died in the Civil War from the approximately 2,600 who fought for the Confederacy, down to 1 soldier who died in Iraq. He said 3 soldiers from Granville County and 7 from Vance County died in Korea, and 13 from Granville and 8 from Vance dying in Vietnam. One Granville County soldier died in Iraq.

By comparison, he found that 68 soldiers from Vance County died in WWII, along with 37 from Granville County.

Records are sometimes hard to come by, Pace acknowledged, and therefore having a truly accurate count is almost impossible.

Pace said a 1973 fire in St. Louis destroyed many records related to servicemen in WWI, making it far easier to locate records from the Civil War and WWII.

Even the Revolutionary War has records that remain, he said.

“There are some pretty good records from the Revolution,” he said. Many people had to sign an Oath of Allegiance against King George. Those signatures are pretty good indications of which side you were on, Pace said.

There’s still one world leader, however, who served her country in WWII and serves her country today, Pace said:

Ninety-six-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. When she was 19, she served in the transportation and ambulance service for England.
