State Highway Patrol Focused On Collision Reduction This Christmas

In anticipation of the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the State Highway Patrol is putting safe driving at the top of its Christmas wish list.

According to AAA, more than 112 million travelers are expected to leave home throughout the holiday period to spend time with family and friends. With this in mind, troopers across the state are focusing on driver behavior in an attempt to ensure everyone arrives safely to their intended destination.

Last year, troopers responded to 3,102 collisions between the dates of Dec. 24 through Jan. 2. Among those collisions, 716 were injury-related and 19 resulted in a fatality. This year, SHP hopes to decrease the number of collisions during the same time frame by focusing on violations such as excessive speeding, reckless driving, following too close and impaired driving.

“The Christmas season is a time to be shared with family and friends,” said Colonel Glenn McNeill Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “Our priority is to reduce needless collisions before they occur in hopes of reporting zero lives lost throughout this holiday season.”

With the increase of distracted driving on the rise across the nation, the Patrol is also taking a proactive approach in reducing distracted driving collisions with the release of a Christmas PSA entitled Two Choices, Your Decision.

Five Arrested in Heroin Drug Bust on High Street

On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, officers of the Henderson Police Department served a search warrant on a residence located at 555 High Street. During the service of the warrant, 2,191 dosage units of heroin, 9.6 grams of raw heroin, 2.25 pounds of marijuana, drug manufacturing equipment, a ballistic vest, $1,972 in U.S. Currency, a semi-auto pistol and a rifle were located.

Located at the residence were Jose Martinez (18), Keylan Johnson (27), Tyler Bryant (19), Kemarus Bryant (18) and Alexis Bryant (20).

All five subjects were charged with five counts of Trafficking Heroin of 28 or more grams, two counts of maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for a controlled substance, one count of PWIMSD Heroin, one count of Manufacture Schedule I, one count of Possession of Heroin, one count of Felony Possession of Marijuana, one count of PWIMSD Marijuana, one count of Manufacture Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana Paraphernalia, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Kylan Johnson had an additional charge of Possession of Firearm by Felon.

Advance Academy Graduates 20 in Mid-Year Ceremony

Advance Academy held its mid-year graduation on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at the former Henderson Middle School Auditorium.

North Carolina Senator Erica Smith shared an inspiring message with the graduates – your future is calling! Dr. LaDonna Cooper led the Presentation of Roses, where each graduate honors someone who helped them on their journey towards their diploma.

With 20 students graduating, Principal Stephanie Ayscue proudly presented each with their diploma. The Air Force ROTC from Vance County High School assisted with the ceremony.

Vance County Schools is proud to have been part of their journey and all that each has accomplished.

HPD: Crack Cocaine Seized, Two Arrested at Orange St. Residence

On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, officers of the Henderson Police Department served a search warrant on 925 Orange Street. During the search of the residential property, 48.9 grams of “crack” cocaine, 6.5 grams of cocaine, 2.1 grams of marijuana, drug manufacturing equipment and multiple boxes of ammunition were located.

Vincent Corbin (51) and Crystal Williams (36) of the residence were arrested.

Corbin was charged with:
1 count of Trafficking Cocaine, 1 count of PWIMSD Schedule II, 1 count of Maintaining a Dwelling Place for a Controlled Substance, Alter/Steal/Dest. Criminal Evidence, Simple Possession of Schedule VI, and Possession of Drug Manufacturing Equipment.

Williams was charged with:
1 count of Trafficking Cocaine, 1 count of PWIMSD Schedule II, 1 count of Maintaining a Dwelling Place for a Controlled Substance.

NC AgVentures Grants Up to $8K Available for Innovative Farm Ideas

Farmers with innovative ideas to increase farm profits are encouraged to submit a proposal to the NC AgVentures Grant Program.

NC AgVentures is an Extension program that provides grants to NC independent family farms for new and innovative agricultural project ideas which will increase farm profits. This is a great opportunity for any producer who is thinking of diversifying, improving, or expanding their operation.

The deadline for applications is January 14, 2020. Grant awards up to $8,000 are available.

The program offers two grant options – an individual farm grant or a community grant. Both grant options are available in the following counties: Alamance, Alexander, Alleghany, Anson, Ashe, Cabarrus, Caswell, Catawba, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Forsyth, Gaston, Granville, Greene, Guilford, Halifax, Harnett, Iredell, Johnson, Lincoln, Martin, Mecklenburg, Nash, Northhampton, Orange, Person, Pitt, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Sampson, Stanly, Stokes, Surry, Union, Vance, Wake, Wayne, Wilson, Wilkes, Warren and Yadkin.

Vance Co. Middle School Assistant Principal Suspended in Second Assault Investigation

Statement from Vance County Schools:

We, along with the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, have reviewed the footage from the second incident reported to us. District officials have met with the family and offered academic support, resources, counseling and other educational setting options to the student.

Vance County Schools did suspend the assistant principal in question, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The personnel directory information is as follows:

Date of Employment: January 11, 2018

– Mr. Ross has served as an assistant principal on the secondary level since being hired.

– Currently, he is an assistant principal at Vance County Middle School.

– He is currently suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

VCSO: ‘No Merit’ to Separate Allegation Against SRO Deputy Durham

On December 13, 2019, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office received a citizen complaint concerning an alleged incident on December 12, 2019, between a minor child and SRO Deputy Durham and others, which was separate from the previously reported incident. 

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office takes all citizen complaints seriously, as we have this one. Based upon the facts provided, we have reviewed video for the time before, during and after the time period alleged.

Based upon our review of this video, we can find no merit to allegations as provided to us, and further, we can find no interaction that rises to levels alleged.

Town Talk 12/19/19: Daeke Talks City Growth, ‘New Energy’ of Council

Garry Daeke, Henderson City Council member and Franklin-Granville-Vance Development Coordinator, appeared on WIZS Town Talk Thursday at 11 a.m.

Daeke discussed the recent swearing-in of newly elected City Council officials and said he is encouraged by the “slow but steady progress” he has seen with the City, especially over the past year.

Recent collaborations between the City, County, Henderson-Vance Economic Development Commission and Downtown Development Commission have led, in part, to new businesses opening in both the downtown and Dabney Drive areas of Henderson, the approval of construction plans on an outdoor pavilion to be located near McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center and inquiries from outside businesses interested in Henderson, Daeke reported.

“There’s a lot going on with the City; we are going through some exciting times with growth right now,” said Daeke. There’s a new energy and new things happening that I feel really good about.”
