As of December 16, 2019, the Deputy involved in the Vance County Middle School incident is no longer an employee with the Vance County Sheriff’s Office.

We appreciate all the concerns regarding this matter; however, we will ask that everyone remain patient while this investigation is ongoing.

This matter is under investigation with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and all questions or concerns should be directed to 1-8003343000.

School Resource Officer Under Investigation for Assault on VCMS Student

On December 12, 2019, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint by Vance County Schools regarding the Assault on a juvenile by a law enforcement officer. The Vance County Sheriff’s Office reviewed the videotape and referred the matter to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. 

The Deputy involved in the matter was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Vance County Schools released this statement regarding the incident:

We are aware of the incident that occurred at Vance County Middle School involving a school resource officer. We are deeply concerned about the actions that took place.

School and district officials are working closely and in full cooperation with the local authorities to address this matter consistent with school board policy and state laws. The safety of our students has been and continues to be of the utmost importance to our district.

Vance Co. Schools Holds ‘Community to Schools’ Tour

On Friday, December 13, Vance County Schools held its “Community to Schools” tour. Members from the community had an opportunity to tour Dabney Elementary School, Vance County Middle School and AdVance Academy.

This was a great opportunity for the community to see the teachers in action and the normal operations of our schools. It was a successful event that we continue to hold each year.

VGCC’s Kenneth Wilson Receives Glen Raven Award

Vance-Granville Community College’s Kenneth Wilson (Project Manager –  TechHire Grant) won the Glen Raven award on Thursday, December 12, 2019. He was presented with the award by VGCC President Rachel Desmarais, Ph.D.

VGCC and Glen Raven are longtime partners. The college serves the company by providing training programs for employees on subjects including management, leadership, safety and technical skills such as industrial maintenance.

A strong corporate supporter of VGCC’s Endowment Fund, Glen Raven has endowed scholarships for students as well as awards that recognize faculty and staff excellence.

Take the ‘Polar Plunge’ For Vance Co. Special Olympics

The Vance County Special Olympics 2020 Polar Plunge will be held at the Satterwhite Point Glasshouse on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. that morning; jump begins at 10:30 a.m.

The inclement weather date will be Saturday, February 8, 2020.

The Polar Plunge is an event for courageous participants willing to jump into Kerr Lake in the middle of the winter, all to support and raise funds for the Special Olympics of Vance County.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with others.

All donations earned from the Polar Plunge will go to support local athletes. Individuals are required to collect a minimum of $30 to participate.

Prizes will be given for best costume (individual and team); most money raised (individual and team); and largest team.

Every participant will receive a t-shirt.

Registration forms, along with donations, are due by Friday, January 3, 2020, to Crystal Allen at the Aycock Rec. Center.
