No Bond for Henderson Man Arrested While on Pretrial Release

On October 6, 2020, the Vance County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigation Division, Vance County Sheriffs Office Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Criminal Apprehension Team arrested John Williams Jr. (age 37) at 550 West Andrews Avenue Apt. 55 in Henderson.

Williams was arrested on two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill from an incident in the County. Williams was also charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon from an incident that occurred in the city limits of Henderson

Williams received no bond because he was out on pretrial release for a 1st Degree Murder charge. Williams was placed in the Vance County Detention Center.

Williamscourt date was set for October 19, 2020, in Vance County District Court.

This investigation is continuing.

‘Think Community’ at VCSO’s 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with Dr. Abidan Shah, pastor of Clearview Church, will host the 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event on Saturday, October 24, 2020. The event will begin at 3 p.m. at Clearview Church located at 3485 US Hwy 158, Henderson.

Activities will be held in the church parking lot for social distancing purposes. Face masks are required.

This year’s theme is “Think Community.” The keynote speaker will be Winston-Salem Chief of Police Catrina Thompson and the honorary guest will be Valerie L. Williams, founder and CEO of Lovesmart, Inc.

Music will be performed by the Clearview Praise Team with a special guest performance by Minister Roy Burroughs & Work In Progress.

Refreshments will be served courtesy of Clearview Church.

Sponsors for the event are Clearview Church, the Optimist Club of Henderson and Betty B’s Florist.

New Hope Mini Mart Armed Robbery Suspect Apprehended

On September 7, 2020, the Vance County 911 Center received a call for service regarding an armed robbery that had just occurred at the New Hope Mini Mart located on NC Hwy 39 North at the intersection of Morgan Road. The incident occurred at approximately 7:35 a.m.

An unknown black male entered the store and approached the counter, at which time the suspect produced a handgun and demanded money. The clerk provided the suspect with an undisclosed amount of US currency, at which time the suspect fled the area on foot and was last seen running towards Morgan Road

Through investigative techniques, the suspect was later identified as Dequarius Johnson of Louisburg, NC. Warrants were obtained for the arrest of Johnson for Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Members of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office located Johnson in the early morning hours of September 9, 2020, at which time he was arrested without incident.

Johnson has been placed in the Vance County Jail pending his ability to secure a bond in the amount of $70,000 secured.

Sixty Dosage Units of Heroin Found in Vehicle Stop; Chavis Arrested

On Monday, August 10, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Narcotic Division stopped a vehicle traveling on East Andrews Avenue, Henderson, NC. As a result of the vehicle stop, the passenger inside the vehicle, Tyquilla Lavoya Chavis, (B/F, age 32) was detained.

During the vehicle stop, narcotic officers recovered 60 dosage units of Heroin from Chavis. 

Chavis was brought to the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell and Deliver Heroin.

Chavis’ bond was set at $20,000.00 secured, and she is scheduled to appear in Vance County District Court on November 23, 2020.

This investigation is continuing.

Murder Suspect Antavian C. Yancey Still at Large, Considered Armed & Dangerous

Murder suspect Antavian Cornelius Yancey is still at large. The Vance County Sheriff’s Office is seeking any and all assistance in locating Yancey. He is considered armed and dangerous. If seen, please contact the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office at (252) 738–2200.

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office, along with other state and local authorities, continues to look for Antavian Cornelius Yancey for the murder of Charisma Robinson. It is believed that Yancey has family and friends in Durham, Burlington and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Yancey is considered to be armed and dangerous. If you have seen or have any knowledge about Antavian C. Yancey’s location, please contact your local law enforcement agency.

Original Press Release Issued July 24, 2020:

On Thursday, July 16, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division received a call referencing smoke in a wooded area. Upon the arrival of Deputies and the Vance County Fire Department on the scene, a vehicle was fully engulfed.

Members of the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office Criminal Investigation Division responded to investigate the vehicle fire along with North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s Arson unit. On July 17, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office Criminal Investigation Division received a phone call from the Burlington Police Department in reference to the Burlington Police Department locating the body of a black female that was believed to be from Henderson, North Carolina. The female was identified as Charisma Robinson, age 35.

Investigator began to investigate these incidents and developed that the two cases were connected. Participating agencies from the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office, Henderson Police Department, Burlington Police Department and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation began a collaborative effort to solve the murder of Charisma Robinson,

Through the investigation, a person of interest was developed and later identified as a subject/suspect in this matter.

On July 24, 2020, a warrant for Murder and Burning of Personnel Property was issued for Antavian Cornelius Yancey (B/M/Age 34), regarding the death of Charisma Robinson.

Yancey is believed to be armed and dangerous. If located, please contact the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office at (252) 738–2200.

VCSO: Three Arrested on Kidnapping, Armed Robbery Charges

On Monday, August 17, 2020, 2:55 a.m. the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division responded to 812 Briggs Road, Henderson, North Carolina in reference to a kidnapping and armed robbery. While en route to the scene, deputies located the suspect vehicle. A chase ensued, and the vehicle wrecked at the end of Faucet Road. 

Identified in the vehicle were Susie Ni’Jah Nicole Peace (B/F, age 19), Isaiah Fields (B/M, age 18), Nathaniel Deshawn Lawson (B/M, age 18) and the known victim in this matter.

The Criminal Investigation Division arrived at the scene and began to interview all subjects involved in this matter and subsequently charged Peace, Fields and Lawson with Attempted Armed Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and First Degree Kidnapping.

Peace was also charged with Felony speeding to Elude Arrest. Lawson and Fields were also charged with Second Degree Kidnapping for a case in another jurisdiction that occurred on August 12, 2020, in Oxford, North Carolina.

Fieldsand Lawson’s bonds were set at $250,000 each and Peace’s bond was set at $170,000. All parties are scheduled to appear in court on September 14, 2020, in Vance County District Court.

Two Arrested for Obtaining Property by False Pretense at Quality Equipment

On August 6, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit received information regarding the attempt of obtaining property by false pretense at Quality Equipment located at 70 John Deere Road, Henderson, NC.

Investigators arrived at the scene and observed two individuals loading property onto a trailer after they had forged a person or persons name. 

Investigators approached suspects Hoshayah Abraham Isreal (Age 26) and Javon Tyrell Williams (Age 28).

Ultimately, Isreal was charged with Obtaining Property by False Pretense, Accessing Computer to Defraud, Possession of Stolen Property and Possession Fraudulent ID. Williams was charged with Accessory After the Fact, Possession Stolen Property and Possession Fraudulent ID 

Isreal’s bond was set at $70,000 secured, and Williamsbond was set at $42,000.00 secured. Both parties are set to be in Vance County District Court on September 14, 2020.

Note from Sheriff Curtis Brame: We believe these two suspects have been operating in other jurisdictions throughout North Carolina – possibly in Durham, Alamance, Wake and Cumberland counties.

VCSO: Two Arrested on Cocaine, Drug Charges During Traffic Stop

On July 11, 2020, at 1:41 p.m., the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office Narcotics Division was on routine patrol and conducted a traffic stop at 28 Gholson Place in Henderson, NC.

Arrested at the scene were Demetris Mellon (B/M; Age 29) for Possession with the Intent to Manufacture Sell/Deliver Cocaine and Felony Maintaining a Vehicle, and Charles Woodard (B/M; Age 29) for Possession of Cocaine.

Mellon and Woodard were taken before the magistrate. Mellon received a $10,000 secured bond, and Woodard received a $4,000 secured bond.

The court date was set for September 14, 2020, in Vance County District Court for both Mellon and Woodard.

Malik Royster

Royster Arrested in Heroin Drug Bust at Lakeview, White Oak Drive in Henderson

On Thursday, July 16, 2020, at 1:45 p.m., the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division conducted a buy/bust at Lakeview and White Oak Drive in Henderson, NC.

Arrested during the incident was Malik Rayquan Royster (B/M; Age 24) for the Sell and Deliver of Heroin and Possession of Firearm by a Felon.

Royster was taken before the magistrate, and his bond was set at $25,000 secured. Royster’s court date was set for September 14, 2020, in Vance County District Court.

This investigation is continuing.
