SportsTalk: Elliott Looks Back On Vipers Season

SportsTalk on WIZS 12:30 p.m. M-Th

Although Vance County fell in this year’s playoffs, Vance County Football Head Coach Aaron Elliott says that there are a lot of good things to take away from the 2024 football season, as well as a lot of good things to look forward to next season, Coach said on WIZS’s SportsTalk with Scout Hughes and George Hoyle.

Vance County lost to Western Alamance 36-31 in the first round of the North Carolina 3A State Playoffs. It was still a fantastic football season from the Vipers in which they went 9-2, the second year in a row in which Vance County won nine games. This season marks the third 9-win season since consolidation.

Head Coach Aaron Elliott said at the beginning of the season that triangle football is more than just Raleigh and Durham he said that includes Henderson too and the Vipers proved that this season. Vance County went two and one against team specifically from Raleigh and Durham, and when seven and one versus teams from the Research Triangle area.

When talking about this season, Head Coach Aaron Elliott spoke highly of his 14 seniors. Rightfully so! This senior class has a combined record of 19-3 over the past 2 years. This is a special senior class that has broken many records this season. Between 2023 and 2024, this team has reached new heights that Vance County hasn’t seen in a while. A 10-1 season in 2023, the first 10-win season by a team from Vance County since Southern Vance achieved that mark in 2007, when the Raiders went 13-2.

Changes are coming though, in more ways than one. Coach Elliott says that he is excited for what is to come when the new kids move up to Varsity from JV. Coach Elliott also states that new coaches are looking to be on his staff next year. But there is one major change coming next year and not just for Vance County but for the state of North Carolina. High School athletics are changing from four to eight classifications. Admission numbers were released and finalized earlier this week and Vance County will be a 6A school going forward. Head Coach Aaron Elliott is excited for what’s to come and has already had conversations with the Vance County Athletic Director about realignment, “Philip Weil and I have had talks about realignment but really we are going to have to wait and see as to where we are placed in terms of what conference we will be in.”

In the meantime though, we want to thank Vance County High School for allowing WIZS to broadcast their football games this season. We will be right back next season for more Vance County Friday Night Football on WIZS. Until then, GO VIPERS!

SportsTalk: Vipers Wrap Up Regular Season Against Enloe

UPDATE – FINAL SCORE

Vance County 50

Enloe 21

RECAP MONDAY ON SPORTSTALK

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

SportsTalk on WIZS 12:30 p.m. M-Th

With one game left in the regular season, Vance County High School celebrates the culmination of a wonderful season. Tallied with eight wins and only one loss so far. Eight wins that at times have put us on the edge of our seats. From Vance County winning in their first game of the season against Warren County 18-0 to the very next game beating Rocky Mount by just one point, 23-22. There’s the comeback against Louisburg in the rain after the Warriors scored 21 unanswered points. We have had plenty of things to celebrate this season, from Homecoming to Breast Cancer Awareness in our Pink Game, Military Appreciation Night, and on Friday, Senior Night.

On Friday we Celebrate our 14 Seniors who have given their heart and soul to this Vance County Squad. During their time at the Varsity Level, these Seniors have accumulated a record of 18-2. Last year in 2023 they achieved the first 10-win season for a team from Vance County since Southern Vance met that mark in 2007. An outstanding record for these players:

  • #1 Javion Vines-Holder
  • #7/#0 Antoine Doyle Jr.
  • #8 Barry Henderson Jr.
  • #9 Taeshawn Alston
  • #10 Jontavious Nile
  • #11 Elijah Holden
  • #12 Corbett Southerland Jr.
  • #21 Tyrek Robinson
  • #40 Lee Kinney
  • #50 Maurice Jackson
  • #63 Camarion Ragland
  • #64 Kemari Branch
  • #71 Jose Rivera
  • #77 Antonio Bullock

The Vipers opponent for Senior Night is Enloe High School out of Raleigh. This will be an interesting matchup as a team from Henderson hasn’t played a team from Raleigh since 2016 when Southern Vance opened the year against Ravenscroft. Head Coach of Enloe, Ryan Clark joined SportsTalk with Bill Harris and George Hoyle on Thursday to talk about the upcoming game vs. Vance County. He says it’s a win-win for both teams to play each other, “This game improves both of our RPI Rankings and our strength of schedules. Vance County has only one loss on the year, and with us playing in a competitive 4A conference, it’s beneficial to both of us.” Vance County is 8-1 on the season, finishing runner-up in the Northern Lakes Conference to Southern Durham, while Enloe is 6-3 on the season and finished third in the CAP-6 4A Conference. Both teams are expected to make the state playoffs for their respective classifications. Besides Southern Durham, this may be the toughest team yet for the Vipers and certainly a great test.

There are plenty of things on the line for Friday’s game between Vance County and Enloe. Both teams are looking to improve their playoff seeding. Vance County is looking for a win as their seniors play one last regular season game at Viper Stadium. Coach Aaron Elliott said at the beginning of the season that Triangle football is more than just Raleigh and Durham, he said it’s Henderson too. Vance County has that opportunity to prove why the Vipers should be included with the best of the best from the Triangle.

Vance County will host Enloe High School out of Raleigh on Senior Night for Week 12 of the 2024 season on Friday, November 8th and you can hear all the action on WIZS 1450AM, 100.1FM, and online at wizs.com with pregame starting at 6:50 p.m. and kickoff thereafter at 7:00 p.m.

SportsTalk: Vipers Take On Rival J.F. Webb Friday Night

UPDATE – FINAL SCORE

Vance County 49

J.F. Webb 0

RECAP MONDAY ON SPORTSTALK

SportsTalk on WIZS 12:30 p.m. M-Th

What determines a rivalry? Is it the intensity? Is it the fierce battles between one another? What about the traditions that both teams bring to the table? It very well could be. In this case, however two factors that determine this great rivalry between teams from Henderson and teams from Oxford: Proximity and Longevity. In addition to both teams being in counties that border each other, Vance County and J.F Webb are two high schools that reside in the same conference that just so happen to be about 20 minutes from each other. In terms of longevity, you can call it a tradition for Vance County and J.F. Webb to play each other every year. High schools from Henderson and Oxford have played each other nearly consistently at least since 1923. Regardless of how rivalries are formed, one thing is for sure. No matter what conference these two teams are in, no matter the record or classification of each school, Vance County and J.F. Webb always play each other. Always have. Always will.

Two different high schools. Two different ball clubs. Both going in different directions. Vance County is sitting at 7-1 on the year and is in second place in the Northern Lakes Conference. Head Coach Aaron Elliott said at the beginning of the year that, “The goals have changed for Vance County. Our goal is to not just make the playoffs, but to make deep runs in the playoffs.” J.F. Webb on the other hand, is 1-8 on the year and is in second to last place in the conference. Keionte Gainey, Head Coach of J.F. Webb, who assumed the Athletic Director duties as well this year, is keeping high hopes up for the program. Despite J.F. Webb’s record, Coach Gainey calls this year’s team, “A very special group”, that consists of 17 Seniors that hold a special place in Gainey’s heart.

When you look at the matchup between Vance County and J.F. Webb, what are the keys to the game? For Vance County, consistency is key, according the Head Coach Aaron Elliott. “We gotta be consistent on offense, defense, and be better if special teams.” For J.F. Webb, Coach Gainey outlines what needs to happen in order for the Warriors to win on Friday, “We’ve got to play with grit and heart, I believe that we have the talent to beat Vance County. We are gonna give it our best shot. We wanna beat them before the conference changes next year.”

Whether it’s Henderson High, Henderson Institute, Vance Senior High, Northern and Southern Vance, or Vance County High, and whether it’s Oxford High, Oxford Orphanage, Mary Potter, or J.F. Webb, this matchup on Friday will be one for the ages.

Vance County will host J.F. Webb on Military Appreciation Night for Week 11 of the 2024 season on Friday, November 1st and you can hear all the action on WIZS 1450AM, 100.1FM, and online at wizs.com with pregame starting at 6:50 p.m. and kickoff thereafter at 7:00 p.m.

VCS Announces October Student Spotlight Honorees

From VCS Chief Communication Officer Aarika Sandlin

Vance County Schools has recognized four students from across the district in its October Student Spotlight. These students were selected not just because of their academic achievements, but also because they embody qualities like kindness, dedication, a commitment to personal growth and service to others.

This month’s winners are Lucas Tyburski from STEM Early High, Fatima Ramirez Ramirez of Vance Virtual Village Academy, Rihanna Williams of Vance County High and Damira Williams from Advance Academy. Read more below about their accomplishments, dreams and role models.

Lucas Tyburski, 8th Grader

Lucas was nominated by his teachers and school administration. He exemplifies the qualities of a true STEM shark – someone who cares for his school, his peers and his community.

Lucas recently took the initiative to organize a donation drive for those affected by Hurricane Helene. He also serves as co-president of the SAVE Club (Students Against Violence Everywhere) at STEM, participates in RoboVance and is an anchor on the school’s news team. These contributions highlight his drive to create a positive impact both inside and outside the classroom. Lucas’s favorite subject, Social Studies, allows him to explore various cultures, geography and history.

His dream is becoming a sports commentator, covering games like baseball, basketball, hockey and football—fueled by his love of sports and experience as a catcher on his baseball team. A natural-born leader, Lucas admires the versatility and determination of pro baseball phenom Shohei Ohtani, and he hopes to inspire others through his involvement in school and community initiatives.

Lucas enjoys reading, and his favorite book being Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

When asked what advice he would give to other students, Lucas emphasized the importance of being open to new opportunities—wisdom he has gained through his own personal growth over the years. Most recently, he has enjoyed studying estuaries in science class, where he discovered that bears inhabit Pamlico Sound—just one example of his curiosity and love for learning.

If he could have any superpower, Lucas says he would want to make people kind and friendly, believing that spreading positivity is essential for moving forward in life.

Lucas’s academic journey is driven by the encouragement and support of his teachers, who continue to motivate him daily. As a standout student and a shining example of what it means to be a STEM Shark, Lucas Tyburski’s passion, leadership and dedication make him a true asset to STEM Early High School and the greater Vance County community.

Fatima Ramirez Ramirez, 12th grader

Vance Virtual Village Academy is proud to highlight the achievements of Fatima Ramirez Ramirez, a senior whose hard work, positivity and academic success make her a standout student. Nominated by her English Language Arts teacher, Cynthia Schlessinger, Fatima’s

commitment to excellence serves as an inspiration to both students and staff.

In addition to her V3A courses, Fatima is enrolled in Vance-Granville Community College classes, where she is working toward an associate’s degree.

Her academic drive is matched by her involvement in extracurricular activities, including her membership in the Beta Club and her volunteer work at the VGCC daycare. Fatima’s teacher, Penny Britt, commends her for her positivity, noting that “Fatima’s courteous demeanor makes every conversation enjoyable. Her work is always accurate and delivered on time, reflecting her dedication and attention to detail.”

As a student who has exceptional participation in class, attends all in-person learning events, excels in her coursework and engages in extra-curricular activities, Fatima is a true leader within V3A.

When asked about her favorite subjects, Fatima expressed a particular interest in history, explaining that she enjoys learning about the stories of the world’s past. She also enjoys creating sculptures out of clay and dreams of one day pursuing a career in archaeology and anthropology, where she can travel the world and explore the rich history of different cultures. Fatima’s role model is Hypatia of Alexandria, a renowned teacher and philosopher from ancient Egypt. Fatima admires Hypatia’s bravery and intelligence, stating, “She was a woman too advanced for her time – she stood up for women.” Fatima’s own resilience and determination are evident in her goals for the future, which include helping those in need by addressing issues such as homelessness and food insecurity.

When reflecting on her journey at V3A, Fatima shared that her favorite aspect of the school is the supportive teachers, adding she has found true success since enrolling at the school two years ago. She believes her past experiences motivate her to work hard and achieve her dreams, saying, “I want to be successful and support myself and my family in the future.” Fatima’s advice to other students is to “be yourself and if no one believes in you, you have to believe in yourself. The sky is not the limit; you can go beyond that.” Fatima’s dedication to her education, passion for learning, and commitment to making a positive impact in the world make her a remarkable student and a role model for her peers.

Rihanna Williams, 12th grader

Senior Rihanna Williams School already has her sights set on what’s after high school – and VCHS administration shared, “Rihanna’s commitment to her academics and future plans sets her apart as a role model for her peers. Rihanna has already been accepted to N.C. Central University, where she plans to pursue her dream of becoming a traveling nurse.” In addition to her academic pursuits, Rihanna is an active participant in the school’s Chorus, a passion she has nurtured since she was a freshman under the guidance of Dr. Kowind Stokes.

Rihanna’s academic ambitions and desire to make a difference in the healthcare field reflect her dedication to personal growth and service to others. She is well-known among her peers for her positive attitude and constant support. She shared that her favorite thing about Vance County High School is the support she receives from administration and teachers, noting, “They care and want me to be successful.” When asked about her inspirations, Rihanna named her mother, Alethea Williams, as her greatest role model. “She has been with me through a lot and pushes me to stay focused,” Rihanna explained. Her mom’s influence has shaped her into the resilient and driven young woman she is today.

Rihanna also shared her vision for making a difference in her community. If given the opportunity, she would work to end violence and encourage greater collaboration among community members to create a safer, more supportive environment.

Rihanna’s favorite movie is Transformers and she dreams of traveling to Bora Bora. If she could possess any superpower, she would choose invisibility to help others without fanfare. Her advice to fellow students is simple yet powerful: “Stay focused in school and don’t follow in the wrong ways. “Rihanna Williams is a shining example of the values and excellence that define the students of Vance County High School.

Damira Williams, 7th grader

AdVance Academy is excited to shine the spotlight on Damira S. Williams, a 7th-grade student nominated by her teachers. Damira is a member of the SAVE Club (Students Against Violence Everywhere), where she consistently demonstrates her commitment to helping others and making a positive impact. She is passionate about creating change and strives to support those around her.

Damira’s favorite subject is Math because of her love for calculating and problem-solving. She is still exploring her career goals but is determined to be successful, setting high standards for herself and continuously pushing forward.

Outside the classroom, Damira enjoys dancing and listening to a variety of music genres. Her favorite movie is Scream and she enjoys spending time with her family. Damira admires her sister, Jada, for her accomplishments and the strong bond they share, as well as her mother for being a source of strength and support.

Damira enthusiastically shared her fascination with science terminology and gaining knowledge to become successful. If she could have any superpower, Damira says she would choose the ability to teleport, allowing her to travel anywhere instantly—an exciting prospect for someone who dreams of visiting Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower.

Damira’s motivation comes from within, and she consistently works toward achieving her goals. Her advice to fellow students is to “Keep pushing, don’t be a follower but be a leader. Listen to those giving you advice and stay focused.” As a student at AdVance Academy, Damira values the opportunities available to her and feels that the school truly cares about its students. She is grateful for the supportive environment and the encouragement she receives from her teachers and peers. Looking ahead, one of her wishes is to see a reduction in violence, particularly in her hometown of Henderson, believing that creating a safer community would make a significant difference. AdVance Academy is proud to recognize Damira Williams as a student who exemplifies the school’s values of excellence.

Congratulations to October’s Student Spotlight winners!

SportsTalk: Vipers Take An Unexpected Week Off

SportsTalk on WIZS 12:30 p.m. M-Th

The Vipers of Vance County are having a good football season so far as we are officially over halfway through the 2024 campaign. Head Coach Aaron Elliott joins SportsTalk on WIZS to talk all about it.

Coach Elliott first off gave us his thoughts on the 38-33 wins against Louisburg. “A couple of things that we liked and improved on was our offense. We were able to put together a pretty complete offensive game where we had 500 total yards of offense and five touchdowns so we had a really good game offensively. Some things that we didn’t like we gave up some big plays on defense. That just came down to missed assignments.” The Vipers had three different rushers go over for 100 yards in the game against the Warriors. Javion Vines-Holder and Antoine Doyle Jr with 117 yards each, while Jontavious Nile with 171 yards for the night. Nile is now Top-30 in the state of North Carolina in rushing with over 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. “We knew he was going to be a workload for us and he’s really done a great job for us.”

With no game this week, Coach Elliott will turn into a scout as he will head to Creedmoor as South Granville hosts Southern Durham in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup. “I plan on being there that way we can do a little scouting on South Granville and actually cheer for them a little bit.” The Viper’s next game is at South Granville, on October 11th.

The game between Vance County and East Rutherford has been canceled this week due to Hurricane Helene impacting the western part of the state where East Rutherford would be coming from. Vance County was supposed to have a Hurricane Relief Rally during the game on Saturday, but Coach Elliott says that if anyone wants to bring their supplies for donation, they can bring their supplies to Vance County High School anytime during the week and the weeks ahead. Vance County High School is located at 925 Garrett Road here in Henderson.

Even though the game has been canceled for this Saturday, there is still football in Vance County this week at least. The Vance County JV Vipers host Wake Prep and their JV squad tonight here in Henderson. Coach Elliott gives us his insight on what impresses his JV Team the most this season. “I like to go watch and play… it’s how aggressive they are on plays. How they get after the ball on defense, they’re flying around making plays, they tackle well. And I always think about that because you know the JV is your future. The JV, they’re good you know, they’re winning the conference right now so we’re pretty excited for them.”

Coach Elliott’s message for the fans coming to the JV game tonight is to, “Just come out and support. Although the Varsity game was canceled, it gives us some way to come together and watch a little football, especially this week.”

We are right behind you Coach! Go Vipers!

The next time Vance County will take the field is when they travel to Creedmoor to take on South Granville for Week 8 of the 2024 season on Friday, October 11th and you can hear all the action on WIZS 1450AM, 100.1FM, and online at wizs.com with pregame starting at 6:50 p.m. and kickoff thereafter at 7:00 p.m.
