SportsTalk: Vipers Are Well Rested For Carrboro Game

When the Vance Co. Vipers football schedule was first released, Head Coach Aaron Elliott wasn’t pleased with where his bye week fell.  “It was late in the season and I was skeptical,” Elliott said on Thursday’s SportsTalk.   However, now that the bye week has occurred, the coach feels it’s worked to the Vipers’ advantage.  “We were pretty beat up.  We had some injuries,” Elliott said.

One of those injuries was to star defensive end Taeshawn Alston.  A shoulder problem has kept him out of several games this season, but he is now cleared to return.  Alston will be a game time decision this week at Carrboro.

The Vipers, according to Elliott, needed a break and the bye week has meant that they have come back to practice refreshed and ready to go.  “We had some great practices this week.  Monday’s was one of the most fun practices all season,” Elliott stated.

Elliott expects Carrboro to throw the ball Friday night but rain may interfere with offensive plans for both teams.  “We are prepared for whatever,” Elliot said.  Carrboro has struggled for much of the season, but it is senior night and nothing would please Carrboro more than to upset the 8-0 Vipers.

Listen below to Coach Elliott from SportsTalk, and tune in to the live broadcast of the game starting at 6:50 p.m. on 1450 AM / 100.1 FM / online here at wizs.com.

VIPERS FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Warren County at Vance County

Saturday, November 3rd, 2018

6:00 PM

Can Vance County High School end its first regular football season with back to back wins?  The Vipers have their chance on Saturday when they host the Eagles of Warren County.

The Vipers, now 3-7 (2-3 Northern Carolina Conference) narrowly escaped winless J. F. Webb 14-13 at Vance County’s first Homecoming game last Thursday night, and are fortunate to have the home field again for Saturday’s match-up, which was postponed from September 14.  The Eagles, 2-7 (1-4 NCC) will meet a more experienced and confident nest of Vipers on Saturday than the winless VC team they would have encountered 6 weeks ago, and Warren County has struggled since September 14, losing 5 in a row.

A win on Saturday might give the Vipers an outside chance at a playoff birth, and Warren’s defense is weak.  However, the two offenses are very similar, scoring an average of three touchdowns per game.  Crisp passing from Viper QB Samien Burwell, more catches from his receivers, and far fewer penalties should give Vance County that win, and a repeat of last week’s great running game from Devonte Evans wouldn’t hurt, either.

JF. Webb at Vance County

Thursday, October 25, 2018

Pregame: 6:45 PM

Gametime: 7:00 PM

Vance County High School will have home field advantage this week as the Warriors of J. F. Webb come calling. The Warriors have yet to win a game this season, and the Vipers may not get a better chance for a win than this Thursday night (moved up from Friday due to expected rain storms).

At 0-7 (0-4 Northern Carolina Conference), Webb averages 10 points per game and has allowed over 35 points.  Like Vance County, the Warriors they have hung in every game stubbornly, and have not been shut out this season. With just two games to go in the regular season, the Vipers’ scoring average has remained respectable at just under 23 points per game, and their most productive games were the 36-point win over Roanoke Rapids and 42 points in the thrilling 44-42 double-overtime loss to Bunn.

Like the Warriors, the Viper Defense has taken its lumps all season, allowing just under 34 points per game. Now 2-7 (1-3 NCC), VC can even their conference record with two well-balanced games this week and next. To do that, Viper QB Samien Burwell and his receivers will need to click together from the opening whistle.

Vance County at Granville Central

Friday, October 19, 2018

Pregame: 6:45 PM

Game Time: 7:00 PM

Vance County High School returns to the road this Friday night as the Vipers take the short trip through Granville County to meet Granville Central. Granville Central is one of the two 1A members of the current Northern Carolina Conference (along with Louisburg), but the Panthers are not playing like a “little brother” in the conference.

Now undefeated at 5-0, and 3-0 in the NCC, they opened the season with back-to-back 35-0 shutouts of Bartlett Yancey (2A) and Kipp Pride (1A), and went on to defeat Roanoke Rapids, Warren County and J. F. Webb. Along the way, they had two nonconference games postponed (or maybe cancelled) because of hurricanes. These weather delays required Granville Central to play Bunn this past Monday, and the panthers kept their streak alive with a 22-21 win ! This makes a very full week for the Panthers, who are catching the Vipers on their way UP. Vance County has improved to 2-2 over their past four games, and came just two points short of collecting a win of their own over Bunn two weeks ago.

VIPERS FALL TO RIVERSIDE IN DURHAM 33-6

VIPERS FALL TO RIVERSIDE IN DURHAM 33-6

After reaching the high point of their 2018 football season with a 36-6 victory over Roanoke Rapids last Monday, Vance County fell to a new low point just 4 days later.  The Vipers, who had scored at least three touchdowns in each of their first 5 games, were nearly shut out by 4A Riverside in Durham 33-6 on Friday night.

Even without their leading rusher, the Pirates’ running game proved too much for the Viper defense, which had some good stops – more than in their first four outings, but not nearly as many as they had against Roanoke Rapids.  Although still in the game at halftime, when Riverside led 14-0, the Viper passing game never really got off the ground, and the Pirate running game seemed to get stronger.

VC’s defense scored the sole Viper TD early in the third quarter on a fumble recovery and 50-yard scoring run by Noah Terry, narrowing the Pirate lead to 14-6, but Riverside dominated the rest of the game.  Vance County is now 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Carolina 2A, and they return to conference play at home against Bunn this coming Friday.

Next Broadcast of Vance County Friday Night Football will be this Friday (10-5-18) vs. Bunn Wildcats. Tune in right here at WIZS 100.1 FM / 1450 AM and streaming live anytime, anywhere at www.wizs.com.

Vance County at Roanoke Rapids

Monday, September 24, 2018

6:45 PM – Pregame

7:00 PM – Game Time

Vance County High School faces the Yellow Jackets of Roanoke Rapids tonight (Monday 9/24/18). They will be traveling to the far eastern edge of the Northern Carolina Conference.  After four difficult weeks playing against teams who literally ran all over them, the Vipers had an unscheduled break last week when Hurricane Flo blew every team in Eastern North Carolina off their playing fields; but whether this will help or hurt VC remains to be seen.

The weather did not allow any extra practice, but rest could be helpful at this point, with one-third of the Vipers’ inaugural season in the books, and Vance up against another hard-running offense this week.

Roanoke Rapids has been on a roll the past 4 years, thanks to Head Coach Eric McDaniels, who took over in 2014 and immediately turned the program around, leading them to a conference championship and 3 state playoff games that first season, and rolling up a 4-year record of 37-14.  BUT, this season looks like the Jackets’ toughest one under Coach McDaniel.  Undefeated in their first 7 games last year, RR is already 2-2 this year, their worst start since 2013.

At Viper Stadium vs. South Granville

Friday, September 7

7:00 PM

Vance County High School will begin conference play this Friday in memorable fashion: the game will be the first conference game for the new school’s football program, and the first game played in Viper Stadium, the repainted and repurposed Raider Stadium at the former Southern Vance.

Unfortunately, the matchup will also be a mind-sticker because the Vipers face off with the Vikings of South Granville, the defending Northern Carolina Conference 2A champions, who were undefeated in the regular season last year. With a veteran coach and a proud football tradition, the Vikings bring their hard-running offense into this season as pre-season favorites to repeat as conference champions, even without last year’s starting quarterback, leading rusher and several key receivers.

The Vikings started off this season as well as they did last year, with a 3-0 record, and average scoring of 25 per game, while allowing their opponents just 7 points.  The Vipers have shown that they can score three touchdowns per game, but their defense has allowed 40 points or more in each of their first three outings.

As impressive as the running games of Franklinton, Red Springs, and Beddingfield were against Vance County, their defenses were not as tough as South Granville’s.  That could be bad news for the Vipers.
