Triangle North Healthcare Foundation Launches Community Response Fund

Triangle North Healthcare Foundation has announced the launch of a Community Response Grant Fund, available to nonprofit, local government, and educational organizations, serving the counties of Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren.

The grants will fund relief and response programs related to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  “With the continuing stress on our communities from the Pandemic, our local safety net organizations are struggling to make ends meet and respond to their clients’ needs.  We are pleased to announce the Foundation Board’s commitment to provide grants for community relief,” said Val Short, Executive Director.

Applications for grants up to $20,000 each will be accepted, beginning February 1, 2021. Applications will be reviewed quarterly and grants will be awarded in March, June, September, and December.  Through this Community Response program, recipients can receive up to four grants throughout the year.

The Community Response Grant application is now available at the Foundation’s online grant portal. A link to the grant portal is available at the website:   http://www.tnhfoundation.org   Applications will be accepted continuously now through September 1, 2021.

Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is a regional healthcare grantmaking organization based in Henderson, established in November 2011, after the merge of Maria Parham Medical Center with the for-profit Duke LifePoint.  Funded by an endowment created from the assets of the former nonprofit hospital, Triangle North Healthcare Foundation has invested over $2 million in over 80 programs in the region since beginning grantmaking in 2013.

Triangle North Healthcare Foundation Endows Third VGCC Scholarship

The Triangle North Healthcare Foundation recently endowed a new scholarship specifically designed to support Vance-Granville Community College Nursing students who are enrolled in a program to complete bachelor’s degrees.

In awarding the “Triangle North Healthcare Foundation RIBN Presidential Scholar Award,” preference will be given to students in the “Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses” (RIBN) program. RIBN students are simultaneously enrolled at the community college and North Carolina A&T State University. They earn associate’s degrees in nursing through VGCC over three years (while also taking A&T courses online) and then continue for one year of additional courses at A&T required for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

The new endowment marks a continuation of the partnership between the college and the foundation, which has already created two VGCC Academic Achievement Scholarships, one of which is also designed to be awarded to students in the RIBN program. The Presidential Scholar Award is the college’s second-highest scholarship tier.

“Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is pleased to support the RIBN program, which enables a local student to achieve a bachelor’s degree in nursing at a university while remaining in the community,” said Val Short, the Foundation’s executive director.

Based in Henderson, the Triangle North Healthcare Foundation provides grants to nonprofits organizations, governmental agencies, and schools in Vance, Warren, Granville and Franklin counties. The Foundation also provides scholarships to students in the region who are pursuing health care careers.

“We are grateful for the Triangle North Healthcare Foundation’s partnership with our college to further strengthen the RIBN program,” said Dr. Rachel Desmarais, VGCC’s president. “This scholarship will be a new source of support to help outstanding Nursing students prepare for rewarding careers in health care and meet employers’ need for highly-trained professionals.”

Through the Endowment Fund, VGCC has awarded more than 9,400 scholarships to students since 1982. Scholarships have been endowed by numerous individuals, industries, businesses, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff. Tax-deductible donations to the VGCC Endowment Fund have often been used to honor or remember a person, group, business or industry with a lasting gift to education. West End Watch Group Hears From Triangle North on Area’s Health Needs

Val Short, executive director of Triangle North Healthcare Foundation was the speaker for the most recent West End Community Watch meeting held on Tuesday, November 20. Short explained that the foundation operates with money from a Duke Endowment. The funds are used to award grants to groups working to improve health in our community. Studies have shown that our five areas of greatest need are chronic disease, nutrition and fitness, mental health and substance abuse, reproductive health and success in school.

Since 2013, the foundation has awarded over 60 grants totaling 1.5 million dollars. Grants have been awarded to Access Dental Health, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Smart Start, Granville-Vance Public Health – in response to the Opioid crisis, the YMCA Water Safety program, the YMCA Girls’ on the Run program, The Shepperd Youth Ranch, NC Med Assist, a Diabetes outreach program, and Trosa – a drug treatment program.

In the police report, all were reminded to be extra careful now that Christmas is approaching. There had been events of purse snatching, burglaries, vehicle break-ins, larcenies, and aggravated assaults. All should avoid carrying valuables and be sure to lock all vehicles.
