  • If you have leaf spot on lower leaves of tomatoes you can take those lower leaves off especially if they are below blooms or set tomatoes.
  • Pull English ivy off of trees, or clip at base.
  • Inspect your garden at least 2 times a week for insects and disease.
  • Avoid herbicide applications on tall fescue for the rest of the spring and summer.
  • Record daily what you did in the garden in your garden journal. Ex Spraying, fertilizing

The Local Skinny! Nobles Talks Latest At The Animal Shelter

Thanks to a local volunteer firefighter, the animals up for rescue or adoption at Vance County Animal Services may get some extra “likes” that just might land them in their furever home.

Lightning, a male lab mix, is the first animal to be named “Firedog of the Month” on the Facebook page of Watkins Volunteer Fire Department.

Frankie Nobles, Vance County’s chief animal services officer, said “there’s no telling how many people have seen him” since his picture was first posted a few days ago.

Nobles told John C. Rose on Monday’s The Local Skinny! that he gives all the credit to volunteer firefighter Justin Simmons. It was his idea to feature an adoptable pet from the animal shelter on social media to spread the word about the animals.

It’s a great way to “get the animals recognized and get them out of the shelter,” Nobles said. Just last week, the shelter took in more than 30 kittens; luckily, one rescue organization wanted every single one, and Ruin Creek Animal Protection Society was able to transport them last Friday evening.

Having volunteers like Simmons who think outside the box are certainly helpful as the shelter gets more and more animals, whether they come in as strays or as owner surrenders, as in Lightning’s case.

He said volunteers are welcome at the shelter and their efforts go a long way to socialize animals and prepare them for adoption or rescue.

“Volunteers can get out and walk them – it really helps them out a lot,” Nobles said.

He and his staff are making plans to take puppies or dogs on visits to other county offices and to get the dogs more visible in the community with walks downtown, for example.

It helps the dogs expend some energy, gets them out of their kennels for a bit and – who knows – maybe they’ll find a new home in the process.

The Local Skinny! Maria Parham Health To Host Job Fair On Thursday

Maria Parham Health is hosting a job fair from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 19. There are a variety of clinical and non-clinical jobs available.

Human Resources Director Randy Toscano spoke with John C. Rose on Tuesday’s segment of The Local Skinny! and said job applicants could possibly be extended an offer at the job fair.

Applicants should bring a resume and may apply online beforehand, but it’s not necessary, Toscano said. There will be a computer set up in the hospital lobby to apply. There will be information tables from each department set up and the department heads will be available to speak with prospective applicants.

Among the departments that are looking to fill positions are nursing, radiology, registration and labs, he said. Individuals who are interested in a career in the health care industry are encouraged to attend. “You can walk out with a new career,” Toscano said.

There is always a need for phlebotomists, LPNs and RNs, he added, but also in non-clinical areas such as housekeeping, registration and food service.

The Local Skinny! The Doctor Is In! Free Medical Event This Weekend

The Vance Charter School parking lot transforms into a large waiting room this weekend as a pop-up medical clinic comes to town.

All services are free of charge, and organizers say the only thing folks need to bring may be an umbrella, as rain is forecast for the weekend. The parking lot will open at midnight tomorrow (Friday, May 13) and the clinic will begin at 6 a.m.

Rishabh Jain said the Remote Area Medical clinic will provide medical, dental and vision care for anyone who comes out – no ID is required and no proof of insurance is needed. The school is located at 2090 Ross Mill Rd.

“It’s general health and wellness that we’re trying to promote,” Rishi Dasgupta said. There will be additional resources on site – including boxes of fresh produce – for participants if they’d like them. The idea is to look at health holistically, he said.

In addition to general checkups, there will be women’s health specialists present; dental services include cleanings, fillings, extractions and X-rays and vision patients can expect to get eyeglasses after about an hour, Jain said.

Both Jain and  and Dasgupta graduated from Duke University last weekend and have helped organize the RAM clinic. Both men will be at the two-day clinic this weekend, along with more than 30 other Duke undergrads who have helped plan the event.

“These clinics promote health and wellness in the community,” Dasgupta said “Anyone is welcome at a RAM clinic.”

A patient who needs dental and vision care may need to come both days, because Jain said medical services can be paired with dental or vision services, but not both in one day.

For patients who may need follow-up care, there will be a list of resources available. “We don’t want to identify a problem and send someone home with no next steps,” Jain said.

  • After planting seed watch for crusting of soil after heavy rains soon after planting your seed this crusting of soil can hinder the emergence of your seed so lightly break up that crust so seeds cam emerge well.
  • When spraying the vegetable garden for weeds, insects or disease, be sure to check the instructions for how long you need to wait until you can harvest.
  • Maintain your fruit tree spray program according to label directions for good fruit this year.
  • When purchasing products for weed, insect or disease control, consider buying a “ready to use” option. They require no mixing and usually have just enough product for the job.
  • Protect yourself from the sun when doing garden chores Ex. Wide brimmed hat, sun mask,
  • If you are shopping for a backpack spray, look for one with a hip strap. That distributes the weight better and makes it much more comfortable.
  • Have two garden sprayers 1 Labeled weed control 2 Labeled Insecticides
