Shriners Fish Fry is May 8th

The 60th annual Shriner’s Fish Fry is coming up on Wednesday, May 8, and plans are well underway to provide another great plate of fish with all the sides to raise money for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

The Tri-County Shriners will be out in full force from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide plates of steaming hot fish at 210 Industry Dr., between Mako and Servpro.

Plates are $10 each and although tickets are available for purchase ahead of time, no ticket is necessary – the Shriners will happily take your money in exchange for a plate of fish, slaw, potato salad and hush puppies, said Donald Seifert, a Tri-County Shriner who spoke with WIZS on Thursday’s TownTalk.

“The lines flow smoothly and there’s very little waiting,” said Seifert, as he explained the easy, drive-through process.

They planned for 1,700 plates at last year’s event, and Seifert said the club’s goal each year is to raise $10,000 for Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals. There are 22 hospitals and five burn centers across the country, all of which provide care and treatment – free of charge – for children up to age 18. Shriners also provide transportation to patients and a family member to receive the care they need.

“It’s one of the reasons our Shriners’ Fish Fry has lasted so long,” Seifert said. “It’s for a good cause.”

Last year’s proceeds approached the $10,000 goal, he said. “Our biggest days, we’ve exceeded the goal,” but he predicted that, on average, each fish fry has netted $8,000.

A conservative figure for the fish fry’s 59 years is just shy of half a million dollars.

The volunteers who help behind the scenes and on fish fry day have a good time together, Seifert said, “but there’s so much work to be done on the day of the fish fry, everybody has to be productive to turn out that many plates. It takes a lot of help.”

He said the Shriners appreciate the support of the community each year and they look forward to another successful fundraiser.

“The community has always turned out, and we’re thankful for that,” he said.

Shriners Fish Fry In Full Swing Until 7 PM

The Shriners Fish Fry is still open for business, so swing by Industry Drive and pick up dinner on your way home from work this afternoon  – teams of volunteers have completed all the prep work and the drive-thru lanes are open until  7 p.m.

“Tell ‘em to come on, we got it ready,” said Shriner Vernon Mustian, who is this year’s fish fry chairman and he his fellow Shriners will be preparing plates all day long at their location on Industry Drive, near Lowe’s Home Improvement and Mako Medical.

This is the 59th fish fry, with proceeds going to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, SC.

John Ayscue was manning the payment tent when the fish fry began at 11 a.m. “Come on by and get a fish plate,” Ayscue told WIZS. Shriners sold tickets in advance, but if you don’t have a ticket, you can still come and pick up a plate for $10.

Anyone who orders 10 or more plates can have them delivered. Shriner Larry Parker was gathering plates to deliver to local business M.R. Williams, which has generously supported the Shriners’ efforts through purchase of plates for years.

Organizers hope to raise $10,000 for the children’s hospital, which provides medical care free of charge for children.

“The good Lord gave us a great day,” Parker said. “We’ve got plenty of help and plenty of fish. The plate includes freshly fried fish, cole slaw, potato salad and hush puppies.

Shriner Randy Newman is one of those long-time volunteers for the fish fry, but he also is a Roadrunner, which means he transports the young patients and their parent to appointments at the Greenville, SC hospital.
“I’ve seen the work that they do – it’s amazing,” Newman said. “It does not cost a child or his parents anything out of pocket…food, lodging – everything is taken care of.”

One local youngster who Newman has driven to the hospital for care now serves as an International Ambassador for the hospital.

Of course, this day is about more than fish plates. Many men and women have been dedicated volunteers for this fundraiser for many years.

Ayscue said he’s been collecting money since the fish fry was held at the Armory, which means he’s been one of those dedicated volunteers for a long time. The Shriners have held the fish fry at several different locations since the Armory, including vacant buildings and a former grocery store. But several years ago, fellow Shriner Sherby Slaughter opened up his facility to host the fish fry and the location has proven a good one.

Henry Gupton, Vance County Clerk of Superior Court, hustled past the WIZS microphone just before noontime, in a rush to deliver lunch plates to his colleagues at the courthouse and a couple of other businesses along the way.

Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame was on hand to lend his support to the cause in the early afternoon as well; the local Shriners appreciate the community support that the fish fry has gotten over the years.

“You couldn’t give to a better cause…to help a child,” said Billy Currin, another one of those long-time volunteers. Currin told WIZS that teams had prepared containers of cole slaw and potato salad for 1,700 plates Tuesday evening – the only thing left to add were the fish and hush puppies.

Volunteers arrived early to start preparing the fish, Currin said. By day’s end, he said 800 plates would have been delivered – and that doesn’t include those that customers pick up themselves.

More than 100 plates were whisked away for delivery by 10 a.m., he noted.

“Our delivery this morning was very strong,” Currin added, standing near the drive-thru lanes that were seeing a brisk business as well.

The Local Skinny! Shriner’s Fish Fry Is Scheduled For May 17th

The Tri-County Shriner’s Fish Fry is on again for its traditional third Wednesday in May and area Shriners are gearing up for another long, but productive day, with delicious results for its patrons.

Plates are $10 each – take-out only – and sales will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, said chairman Vernon Mustian.

Mustian and Donald Seifert were guests on WIZS “The Local Skinny!” to talk up the 59th fish fry.

You just may spy Mustian near the cookers on Fish Fry Day. “I have been cooking there for awhile,” he acknowledged. He holds the club’s office of First Vice President, but the club also put him in charge of the whole event this year. “It is a chore,” he said, adding that his admiration has grown for those who have organized past events.

“We try to put out a good plate,” Seifert said. “The price is reasonable and if we have good weather, I’m sure we’ll have a good turnout.”

“We are hoping to raise more than last year, “ Mustian said. “We had a good year last year, and we’re looking for a big number – at least $10,000.”

Shriner Henry Gupton told WIZS in an earlier interview that all proceeds after expenses will be donated to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, SC.

Tri-County Shrine Club Fish Fry Wednesday in Henderson

The local Shriners Fish Fry is this Wednesday, May 18.

This is the 58th fish fry and local Shriner Donald C. Seifert spoke with WIZS about how the event has evolved over those almost six decades as it continues to raise money for local causes as well as for Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals.

The annual event has been held in numerous spots over the years, many of them at the old Henderson Armory. Patrons had a chance to eat in or take out, as well as visit with friends from across the community.

“It’s been reshaped a bit over the last several years,” Seifert said. The fish fry is held at what he called “the Slaughter building,” located between Mako Medical and Serv Pro on Industry Drive.

Local Shriner Sherby Slaughter provides the site for the fish fry, and Seifert said last year’s take-out option proved successful.

“We just don’t have the space inside to serve patrons,” he said, “and we miss that. We do have the drive-thru set up and it’s worked well.”

Lots of planning goes into the annual fundraiser, well in advance of the event date, which traditionally is the third Wednesday in May. The gates open at 11 a.m. and the goal is to sell about 2,000 plates by the time the fish fry is over about suppertime.

Thanks to some coordination with the nearby Salvation Army, Seifert said there should be no problems with having enough fish. “The Salvation Army has agreed to let us have some reserve product in their kitchen,” he said. “If we start to run low, we’ll have easy access and have plenty of fish.”

Like many organizations, the Shrine Club isn’t as large as it once was, and members rely on volunteers to help keep things rolling on fish fry day, whether it’s delivering plates of 10 or more to area businesses or cooking and packing the food into containers, volunteers play a key role, for which Seifert says his fellow Shriners are grateful.

“My hat’s off to our volunteers,” he said.

The fish fry is a highlight of the club’s year, and its proceeds help support local causes like First Responders and as well as the children’s hospitals that the Shriners are associated with.

“There are so many good causes around, especially local causes that we feel like we’d like to help,” Seifert said. “Of course, the hospitals get a nice donation…but we try to share as best we can.”

Tickets are $10, but you don’t have to have a ticket in advance – just follow the line of traffic out to Industry Drive, pull in, pick up a plate and get a great big “Thank You” from a Shriner.

New Location for Tri-County Shrine Club’s Annual Fish Fry

The Tri-County Shrine Club, formerly Henderson Shrine Club, will hold its 56th annual Shriners Fish Fry on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Changing the name to more accurately reflect the members’ residing counties, the Tri-County Shrine Club looks forward to the spring fish fry each year.

Treasurer Donald Seifert, who was interviewed on Tuesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program, said the name of the club is not the only difference this year – the location has also changed.

“Our former fish fry location on Raleigh Road was leased and is no longer available,” said Seifert. “The Shrine Club has been meeting at 210 Industry Drive behind Lowe’s Home Improvement in Henderson for some time now, so we decided to adapt that location to work for this year’s fish fry.”

The fish fry will be drive-through pickup only; no plates will be consumed on the premises. Deliveries will be available for 10 or more plates.

For $8 a ticket, supporters will receive a “generous portion” of fried fish, coleslaw, potato salad and hushpuppies.

As in prior years, proceeds benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children, a fact that Seifert says hasn’t changed throughout the fundraiser’s history.

“We certainly hope we can continue to support those hospitals because they do such great work for children. It’s a wonderful association.”

Granville Shriners Fish Fry (Oct. 10)


In the cover photo – Bob Hair, with the Burlington Shrine Club, brought his club’s hospital transport van affectionately known as “the roadrunner” to the 55th annual Henderson Shrine Fish Fry in 2018.

According to Hair, the roadrunner has traveled many a mile to bring children to the closest Shriner’s hospital in Greenville, SC. “Two Shriners ride in the van to take sick children to the hospital,” said Hair. “We stay with them until they get through it [procedure] and then we bring them back home.”

Now it’s time for the Granville County Shrine Club’s Annual Fish Fry.  It’s coming up this Wednesday, Oct 10th and will take place at the Shrine Club on Roxboro Road, Hwy 158 in Oxford.
