Friday (3-16-18) the Oxford Prep Griffins beat Franklin Academy by a score of 10 – 0. Another excellent pitching job by Jordan Dunn with 10 strike outs. Dunn had 1 hit 2 RBI, Kaci Roberson had 1 hit 1 RBI, MacKenzie Pendergrass had 2 hits 3 RBI, Hannah Brewer had 1 hit 1 RBI, and Jordan Jones had 1 hit 1 RBI. The Griffins face Vance Charter on Tuesday for our fourth straight conference game.

Congratulations to Oxford Preparatory School sophomores Danny Gillis and Ian Simmons for their selection to represent the Griffins at the 2018 HOBY Leadership Seminar. Danny is the son of Kay and Peter Gillis from Wake Forest, NC. Ian, son of Candace and Demmarcus Simmons, is from Henderson, NC. The two young leaders were selected by the teaching staff of OPS based upon their critical thinking skills, creative approach to problem solving, sensitivity to the needs of others, courage to speak out, willingness to respectfully challenge the status quo and an interest in serving the community.
Since 1958, the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership organization has provided transformative leadership development training that positively impacts the lives of students across the United States. In North Carolina, sophomores from across the state will spend 4 days on the campus of NC State University where they will be engaged in a fun, life-changing experience while they cultivate leadership skills that will serve them long into the future.

On a very hot day in August of 2013 parents and students spent the morning opening crates, putting together desks and chairs, cleaning floors and moving white boards. Later that SAME afternoon, Oxford Preparatory School opened its doors for the first time to welcome students. For the first three years of the school’s existence, students attended classes in mobile units. Each year the story of OPS has unfolded as new students and their families have joined together to grow the school. On Saturday, June 10 OPS realized a dream as they conducted their inaugural commencement ceremony.
In the presence of over 500 guests, 43 Oxford Prep students received their high school diplomas. Students in this class have successfully completed over 640 college credit hours through AP coursework/testing and the partnership with Vance Granville’s CCP program and many are entering college as sophomores. Over 86% of the class have been accepted into four year colleges. Students have committed to attending UNC-CH, NCSU, UNC-W, UNC-C, ECU, Appalachian, University of Denver, University of South Carolina, Campbell, Barton, A&T, Belmont-Abbey, UNC-Greensboro and others. Students have given more than a thousand hours of service back to the communities around us in addition to being part of conference championship teams in golf, baseball and men’s cross country.
After musical selection by the orchestra under the leadership of Director Jason Pulley and the performance of Omnia Sol (Let Your Heart be Staid) by the concert choir led by director Sarah Stallsmith, Jaylen Edwards, daughter of Billie Culbreath of Oxford, was chosen to speak by the teaching staff as the representative of the Spirit of the Griffin – someone who is dedicated to reaching farther than they thought they could, giving tirelessly back to the community, taking on leadership roles in a variety of ways and supporting the school at all times. She spoke about the beginning of the school and then reflected on all she had gained, including earning enough hours to enter UNC-G in the fall as a second semester sophomore in the fall, by being a part of the beginning of OPS.
Five students graduated Summa cum Laude including Morgan Daniels, Jackson Grissom, Rachel Sanya, Molly Stock and Hunter Strickland. To receive Summa cum Laude status students were required to maintain a GPA greater than 4.5. Students from this group chose Jackson Grissom, son of David and Alex Grissom, to represent them as someone who has demonstrated excellence in all that he does and who has attained high levels of academic achievement, service and leadership. Jackson, who will be a part of the honors college at Appalachian in the fall, brought his sense of humor to the audience as he reminisced about rising from the trailers, having to work through really hard classes including those at VGCC, making new friends, listening to lectures both inside AND outside of the classroom, beginning traditions and leaving a legacy for others to enjoy.
Acknowledging that all students had taken at least one college level course, completed more than 27 credits including at least 4 science and 3 foreign language courses, and had given a minimum of 15 service hours per year, Executive Director and school founder Andrew Swanner presented 43 candidates for degrees to Chairman of the Board, Kim Hicks. Assisted by Chief Marshal Catherine Stallsmith and Marshal Whitt Daniel, students were presented with diplomas.
The new Griffin alma mater, “Griffins Rise,” composed as a senior fine arts project by Katherine Redman, Class of 2018, was then performed by the OPS Concert Chorus and accompanied by the composer. In the lyrics Ms. Redman urges students to “Rise, Griffins, Rise. Even if it’s hard to try. A lion’s heart and eagle’s wings cloaked in knowledge and in dreams soar on high and Arise and you’ll see that you can fly.”
On Saturday afternoon 43 Griffins proved that they indeed could rise and fly. Assistant Director Victoria Bradsher closed the ceremony by presenting the first group of OPS alumni to the audience and noted that they are now ready to fly off to new beginnings.
With the regular season over, the Griffins finished 14-10 overall and 11-1 in conference play, clinching their very first baseball conference championship. The Griffins took another step forward in the young program’s history. Last year, in the first season of varsity play the team finished 12-12 overall and 3rd in the conference. The Griffins will likely earn a 4 seed in the Mideast Pod of the 2017 NCHSAA 1A Baseball Playoffs, where they will host a home playoff game on Wednesday against an opponent TBD.
Some of the highlights this year include a victory over Northern Vance, beating conference rivals Louisburg and Granville Central in the same week clinching the conference championship, and earning the right to host the first home playoff game in program history. The Griffins were led by Senior Garrett Reaves with 6 pitching wins, Junior Trey Reese with 3 pitching wins and hitting .380, Freshman Ben Hester hitting .383 with 3 HRs on the year, and Senior Timari Perry hitting .356.
On Wednesday, April 26th the Oxford Preparatory School Varsity Golf Team concluded their stint in the Tar Roanoke Athletic Conference with not only finished the regular season with a Team Championship but won the Conference Tournament as a team. The team has achieved both honors for the last two years, which is quite a feat as this is only the second year of the existence of the team. In addition, 3 of the total 6 TRAC all conference player positions went to Senior Noah Greenway, Sophomore Jacob Bliss, and Sophomore Adam Sizemore. Freshman Wesley Aitken just missed all conference honors in 7th position.
Still riding high from their accomplishment, the Griffin golfers consisting of Noah Greenway, Jacob Bliss, Adam Sizemore, Wesley Aitken, and Junior Christian Furr rolled in to Washington, North Carolina for the 1A East Regional Competition on Monday, May 1st. After a disappointing showing finishing in third at the Regional last year, just making it through to the NCHSAA State Tournament the team was looking to make an improvement on their showing. They did just that taking the Championship as a team and advancing once again to the 1A Men’s State Chamionship, however, this time as Conference and 1A East Champions. The team will compete against all 1A team and individual qualifiers at Whispering Pines Country Club in Whispering Pines, NC on May 8th and 9th.
The Tri-M® Music Honor Society, the honor society for secondary school music students, announces the chartering of a new chapter at Oxford Preparatory School in Oxford, North Carolina, under the leadership of Sarah Stallsmith. 27 students from grades 9-12 were inducted into the organization in a ceremony held at Salem United Methodist Church on January 25, 2017.
The formation of this chapter signifies the school’s recognition of the importance of the arts in the development of a comprehensive educational program. The Tri-M Music Honor Society provides a means of recognizing the efforts and achievements of music students who volunteer their time and share their musical talent with others. Since 1952, almost 5,000 Tri-M chapters have been chartered in the United States and abroad, and current membership exceeds 50,000.
The goal of the Tri-M Music Honor Society is to foster greater interest in band, orchestra, and choral performance and to provide more opportunities for personal musical expression. Students are selected for membership in the honor society on the basis of musicianship, scholarship, character, leadership, and service to their school and community. The organization’s high standards serve to challenge students to greater effort and achievement and to encourage them in the pursuit of excellence.
In 1983, the Tri-M Music Honor Society became a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). National Association for Music Education, among the world’s largest arts education organizations, is the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. NAfME advocates at the local, state, and national levels; provides resources for teachers, parents, and administrators; hosts professional development events; and offers a variety of opportunities for students and teachers. The Association orchestrates success for millions of students nationwide and has supported music educators at all teaching levels for more than a century.

Applications for new 7th – 12th grade student enrollments for the 2017 – 2018 school year are available at oxfordprep.org and available in the school office. Oxford Preparatory School (OPS) is an independent and tuition-free public charter school that is designed to mold students into future leaders through completion of a rigorous curriculum while focusing on community service and developing an appreciation of the arts. OPS offers a college preparatory curriculum, a variety of competitive middle school and varsity athletic teams, and is now located in a permanent facility at 6041 Landis Rd. in Oxford.
The open enrollment period began on Monday, October 31, 2016. To be considered for a potential lottery, all applications must be turned in to the office or postmarked by Friday, February 3, 2017. If more applications are received than available seats in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade a blind public lottery will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017. All students choosing to attend OPS will need to confirm enrollment by completing and sending in an enrollment packet by Friday, March 10, 2017. After February 3, applications will continue to be accepted, and processed in the order they are received.
Oxford Preparatory School invites families of prospective students to learn more about the unique offerings of the school. The final of three information sessions will be held on Thursday 1/19 at 6:00. Afterwards, tours will be conducted that will allow the opportunity to meet faculty. In addition, prospective students are invited to spend time visiting the school so they can experience our unique school program firsthand. Visiting students accompany OPS student guides through their classes during a four-hour visit. It’s a chance to meet the staff and the students and to get a snapshot view of our engaging college preparatory classes. The final of three shadow days will take place on Friday 1/20 from 11:10 – 3:10.
