TownTalk: Jimmy Sidberry Explains Insurance Options During Annual Enrollment Period

The adage “One size does not fit all” is especially true for insurance coverage, a point to which local insurance representative Jimmy Sidberry can attest.

“This is my season,” Sidberry said on Tuesday’s TownTalk with guest host Steve Lewis, referring to the annual enrollment period open now through Dec. 7.

The annual enrollment period is a time for Medicare beneficiaries to take a look at their existing plans and make sure they’re still getting the best deal for their situation.

As Sidberry, with The Health Insurance Store on Dabney Drive explained it, Medicare is a federal insurance that pays 80 percent of a plan for people over 65. Medicaid is a state plan that helps low-income people pay that 20 percent not covered by Medicare.

Medicare is for people over 65 and for people under 65 with certain disabilities.

There are Medicare Advantage plans that provide coverage for  extras like dental and vision, Sidberry said.

The main thing that Sidberry said people approaching Medicare age should remember is this: Apply during the all-important window before your 65th birthday and no later than two months after. “If you wait, you can run into penalties,” he said. Penalties that won’t go away.

Same with prescription drug plans. The federal government requires beneficiaries to select a drug plan.

Beneficiaries who follow all the guidelines and meet all the deadlines have options before committing to a yearlong plan, Sidberry said. The open enrollment period runs between Jan. 1 and March 31.

“If a plan isn’t working for you, talk with your agent during the open enrollment period,” Sidberry suggested.

TownTalk: Preparing For Open Enrollment For Medicare

The Open Enrollment for Medicare is now underway, and it is the time for those enrolled in Medicare to do a little research and decide if they need to make any changes in their current plans. The open enrollment period for Medicare ends Dec. 7.

Lisa Barker is the Northeast regional manager for SHIIP – Seniors Health Insurance Information Program – a consumer information division of the N.C. Department of Insurance. Barker told WIZS recently that there are SHIIP coordinators in each of the state’s 100 counties. Theirs is an assist-only mode, however.

“We are not insurance agents and we don’t sell insurance,” Barker said, but they can help people compare plans and help to navigate through an insurance system that can seem complicated at times.

Rather, SHIIP counselors assist people who do receive Medicare with questions they may have, whether it’s Medicare, Medicare Part B, supplements or understanding long-term care insurance.

With 2.3 million Medicare beneficiaries in the state, Barker said it’s important to understand that it’s important to review plans and coverage each year. Here is a list of phone numbers for coordinating sites in the four-county area:

By sitting down with a SHIIP counselor, Barker said individuals can review their current medications and physicians to make sure they don’t need to switch to a different plan.

“Medicare beneficiaries can compare all the plans and determine if they want to switch for the new year,” she explained.

“We can assist enrolling them in a new plan,” Barker continued. “Even if they’re happy with their current plan, it’s just a good idea to come in and talk – just so you know your money is being spent in the best way possible.”

Changes must be made by Dec. 7 to guarantee coverage continues without interruption on Jan. 1, 2023.

“Medicare plans and prices change, N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said. “It is important for Medicare beneficiaries to take advantage of the Open Enrollment period by contacting local SHIIP counselors to save money, improve your coverage or both.”

Make sure you contact your local SHIIP counselor before deciding about coverage because you may be able to receive more affordable and better Medicare health and/or drug plan options in your area. For example, even if you are satisfied with your current Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, there may be another plan in your area that covers your health care and/or drugs at a better price.

Barker said she’s been involved in SHIIP in one way or another since 1998. She recalled an older couple who came to her a few years ago to review their plans. Plans had changed since they were initially enrolled in Medicaid, and their monthly premiums were going from $17 to $60.

Upon review of medications and copays, Barker said, the couple could continue with their current plan, but it would be much more expensive. Barker helped them find a new plan, which saved them more than $6,000 a year – and had lower copays.

“I tell this story often because, for them, it comes down to the cost of insurance versus food and electricity…the hugs from them and the relief on their face was priceless,” she added.

Making an appointment with a SHIIP counselor is one way to stay updated and educated on the changes in Medicare and the all the other pieces of the insurance puzzle.

But Barker cautioned individuals about sharing their personal information with others who claim to be working on your behalf, but who may really be trying to gain that personal information to be used in fraudulent ways.

“You want to make sure you’re protecting yourself,” she said. “If they’re asking you for too much personal identifying information,” be wary.

“The North Carolina Department of Insurance or SHIIP is never going to go door-to-door asking for information,” she said. Make sure you’re not giving out that information to someone who contacts you – whether by phone, personal visit, email, text or other written correspondence.

Roughly $68 billion is lost each year to Medicare fraud.

Individuals also should regularly review their Medicare Summary Notices to verify that all charged listed are actually for the services that were provided by your healthcare professionals.  Ask questions if you think something looks suspicious.  It doesn’t hurt to question a charge.  Also, simple mistakes can happen.  When typing the number 10 someone could accidently hit the zero a second time and make the charge 100.  SHIIP can help individuals file a Medicare fraud claim.

TownTalk: Medicare Open Enrollment Ends Tuesday; Others Soon

Medicare recipients have until midnight tomorrow (Tuesday) to make changes in their insurance coverage and a local agent said that although the deadline looms, there’s still a little time to take action.

Bradley Edwards, of Consolidated Marketing Inc. (CMI) insurance in Henderson can help review existing policies to make sure consumers are getting the best deal – for them. “You don’t have to do something, but if you want to do something, time is running out.”

He told John C. Rose on Monday’s Town Talk that it’s often challenging for individuals to navigate the plans and coverage options.

“We can help sort through the confusing maze of health insurance out there to help people get the best deal available to them,” he said.

Sometimes, Medicare recipients purchase supplemental coverage to help bridge gaps with prescription medications or copays, he said.

Edwards, who grew up in Henderson, said his whole outlook is about helping people make the best decisions possible. “It’s all about developing relationships and helping each other out.”

Sitting down with an insurance expert to sift through the type of coverage that best suits your needs could be beneficial. There are plans within Medicare that are $0 plans, as there are with Affordable Care Act insurance plans, he added.

“Medicare Advantage plans are becoming more popular,” he noted. That is under Medicare Part C. Parts A and B are the “original” Medicare plans for medical care and hospitalization. and Part D is the prescription drug plan. Visit www.Medicare.gov  to read more.

Health needs may change from year to year, and you may need to adjust your plan to reflect those changes. It may be helpful to review the likelihood of needing to see your regular health care provider or specialists in the next year to make sure you have the best coverage possible.

Prescription drug needs, how often you go to the doctor or other medical specialist all can have an affect on out-of-pocket expenses. “Everybody has different medical needs,” Edwards said. “There’s definitely a variety of plans out there.”

Newer insurance carriers have come on the scene and offer alternatives for consumers. When shopping for insurance plans, it’s important to take a look at network coverage as well as the monthly premium amount you’ll pay for the plan.

Open enrollment for ACA plans – those who do not receive Medicare – ends on Dec. 15, so there’s still a bit of time to make changes there for those who want coverage to start on Jan. 1, 2022. The deadline is extended to Jan. 15 for those who wish coverage to begin on Feb. 1, 2022.

Edwards said the cost of everything is going up and that certainly includes medical expenses. A medical bill “can get ugly pretty quick.”  Plans that cover these catastrophic events cap the amount that a bill can be run up, he said.
