The Local Skinny! Live Nativity At North Henderson Baptist Church

Pastor Eddie Nutt invites the community to a live nativity presentation at North Henderson Baptist Church on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7.

There will be three presentations offered between 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. both nights – lasting just about a half hour each.

Most of the characters will be portrayed by children, Nutt said on Tuesday’s segment of The Local Skinny! A narrator will read from the Gospels as the children act out the story of Jesus’s birth in Bethlehem.

This is the first time in several generations that the church has put on a live nativity. The idea was born when several church members had a desire to do something new for the community, Nutt said, “a different type of outreach to remind people of the true meaning of what Christmas is all about.”

There will be refreshments served – including fresh popcorn from a brand-new popcorn machine – and folks can come inside to shake off any winter chill in the air.

Nutt said it’s special to see church members who are willing to give their time to create a production like a live nativity. It shows they care for their community and they want to share the love of Jesus Christ, he added.

He admitted his relief that a real live donkey has been secured to take part in the live nativity.

“Because I was the closest thing they had until they got a real one,” he joked.

TownTalk: North Henderson Baptist Church One-Day VBS, Backpack Giveaway Aug. 3, 4

North Henderson Baptist Church has planned two special events next weekend and Pastor Eddie Nutt invites the community to come out and participate.

Nutt joked that he’s trying to keep members of his congregation at church all weekend long, not just in the pews on Sunday but also as volunteers for the one-day Vacation Bible School on Saturday, Aug. 3 and then for the “back to school party” complete with backpack giveaways and a hotdog supper.

The VBS is designed for special-needs individuals and Nutt explained that it’s for all ages. There is no cost to attend the 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. activity, which will include crafts, music, Bingo and, of course, a Bible lesson. The morning will conclude with a meal, he said on Tuesday’s segment of TownTalk.

It’s the first time the church has had a VBS for those with special needs, and it’s an extension of the weekly 9 a.m. service for this population from the community, which Nutt said is “holding steady” with attendance.

“We’ll have plenty of hands-on (from volunteers) to help with crafts, Bingo with prizes for everyone as they learn about God’s love,” Nutt said.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, the church fellowship hall will be abuzz with activity for the back-to-school party, which begins at 5 p.m.

“We’ve had back to school parties for years,” Nutt said, and this year marks the third year for the backpack giveaways. Last year, they gave away more than they had available, but they created a wait list and were able to distribute additional backpacks after making a second run to purchase bookbags and supplies to go in them.

“This year, hopefully we’re prepared for a bigger crowd,” he said.

He does ask that the children who receive backpacks be present at the Aug. 4 event, so Nutt and his church volunteers can share “face to face” the Good News that Jesus loves them.

And be on the listen-out for next year’s “Night To Shine Prom” for special-needs individuals.

It was the first time that the church had hosted the event, so Nutt said they didn’t know how many to expect.

But with between 65 and 70 prom-goers in attendance, along with caregivers and family members who came and stayed for the festivities, Nutt said he was pleasantly surprised at the turnout.

The church applied for, and was accepted, as a site for the February 2025 event, which is traditionally held the Friday night before Valentine’s Day.

TownTalk: Special “Night to Shine” Prom Slated For North Henderson Baptist Church Feb. 9

North Henderson Baptist Church is looking forward to being a part of what arguably may be considered the biggest prom night in the world. The church is one of more than 700 locations across the globe that will be hosting “A Night to Shine” on Friday, Feb. 9 and the Rev. Eddie Nutt said prom attendees should expect to get “the absolute royal treatment.”

Sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, “A Night to Shine” is in its 10th year of providing a prom experience for individuals with special needs, Nutt said on Tuesday’s TownTalk – a segment of society often overlooked when it comes to fun stuff like proms and such.

The prom is for individuals 14 and older with special needs, Nutt explained. They’ll walk the red carpet, get a limo ride around the block and enjoy an evening filled with food, music and dancing – with photographers and videographers on hand to capture those special moments. The prom will begin at 6 p.m. and will end about 9 p.m.

And all this is “to show them the love of Christ,” Nutt said, “that they are loved and they do have value.”

The goal is to have 75 folks attend the prom, and Nutt said there will be a respite room for parents or other caregivers who may want to stay close while their loved ones enjoy a few hours of music and dancing.

Please register by Friday, Feb. 2 so organizers can plan to have enough food and nametags – not to mention crowns and tiaras.

That’s part of the “royal treatment” Nutt referred to – each prom goer will get a crown or tiara to proclaim them kings and queens of the prom.

“They will get the absolute royal treatment – it’ll be an event that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives,” Nutt said.

Nutt has been pastor at North Henderson Baptist Church for about three years, but he’s been thinking about how to minister and reach out to individuals with special needs for more than 10 years.

Each time he’d pray about it, read up on it or talk to others at the Baptist State Convention, he said God would speak to him and say “not now.”

But over the past few months, “God has flipped the green light, indicating the time is now,” Nutt explained.

He got a nudge from a woman back in the summer who asked if her special-needs granddaughter could attend the church’s Vacation Bible School.

Her question, specifically, was: Would her granddaughter be welcomed?

That set the wheels in motion for not only the Night to Shine prom, but also a new ministry called Jesus’ Buddies. The half-hour service is at 9 a.m. on Sundays and is specifically designed for special needs youth and their families.

The program uses puppets and lots of visuals to help youngsters with learning challenges “grasp the message and understand the love of Christ,” Nutt said. How many pastors use a flannel board and moveable biblical figures to reinforce their message? Nutt does.

During Tuesday’s program, a caller had nothing but high praise for the Jesus’ Buddies service and said her grandchild is looking forward to attending the Night to Shine prom next month.

“What a blessing North Henderson Baptist and the congregation have been to me and my special needs granddaughter. Rev. Nutt and his wife and the congregation are so friendly…they are such a blessing.”

The Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ collection week runs through Nov. 20, and there are several local drop-off spots that will be collecting boxes filled with gifts that will be distributed throughout the world for Christmas. Shoebox gifts prepared by generous donors and filled with toys, personal care items and school supplies may be dropped off now during National Collection Week, which began today and continues for the next week.
