Town Talk 06/04/20: NC MedAssist Holding Mobile Free Pharmacy Event in Oxford

Kinzie Luce, Mobile Free Pharmacy events and volunteer manager with NC MedAssist, appeared on WIZS Town Talk Thursday at 11 a.m.

NC MedAssist is holding a Mobile Free Pharmacy Event in Granville County on Friday, June 19, 2020.  The event, which is in collaboration with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, is open to any individual or family needing over-the-counter medications.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Granville County Expo & Convention Center (4185 US-15 South, Oxford, NC 27565). Participants must be at least 18 years old to receive the medicine. No identification is required.

In order to comply with local recommended guidelines, all participants will remain in their vehicles while volunteers retrieve their medicine. For those individuals unable to register online, volunteers will be available to complete registration forms for each person, limiting touch points.

Unlike previous Mobile Free Pharmacy events, this one will be held as a drive-thru service only. Participants are highly encouraged to order their over-the-counter medicine online at https://bit.ly/Granville. “We have completely revamped our Giveaway Day in order to keep our participants, volunteers, and staff as safe as possible,” said Misty Moore, Senior Development Director at NC MedAssist. “Over 100 participants have ordered their medicine in advance which will speed up the process significantly. Please register online if you are able to do so.”

NC MedAssist Offers Free Pharmacy Program to Qualifying Individuals

NC MedAssist is the only free mail-order pharmacy serving all 100 counties in NC since 1997. Although they are most known for their mobile pharmacy events where they distribute over-the-counter medicine into impoverished communities, this organization’s primary focus is their Free Pharmacy Program.

Last year, NC MedAssist served 18,805 patients and dispensed 229,805 prescriptions valued at $68 million dollars to low-income, uninsured individuals throughout North Carolina. Once enrolled in the Free Pharmacy Program, prescription medication is mailed directly to the patient’s home, usually providing a 90 day supply.

“As a result of the COVID-19 crisis, thousands of North Carolinians are losing both their jobs and their health insurance. However, not everyone knows that our program exists, especially people who may have never needed our services before,” said Lori Giang, CEO of NC MedAssist. “Without our health, we have nothing. So we want our neighbors across the state to know that we are here and ready to help them in any way we can.”

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, NC MedAssist has restructured its services to be more digitally available. They have added their enrollment application online, as well as transitioned their Free Over-the-Counter Store (located in Charlotte) into a curbside pick-up retail pharmacy with online ordering available. They have also extended re-certification deadlines for current patients who may need additional time to gather their required documentation.

“We realize this is a critical time for everyone,” said Giang. “Our number one goal is to ensure that families across the state continue receiving the medication they need to live.”

NC MedAssist Crisis Fund Provides Medication to Low-Income, Uninsured Residents

NC MedAssist, a statewide free pharmacy, has launched a Crisis Fund in response to the overwhelming need to provide life-saving medication to low-income and uninsured residents across North Carolina.

Through this fund, NC MedAssist will provide support in two areas: providing over-the-counter medicine to marginalized populations and dispensing free prescription medication to those who have lost their income and health insurance due to COVID-19. NC MedAssist is working with key partners such as Novant Health to ensure every North Carolinian with a chronic illness who has lost their job and health insurance will have access to their lifesaving prescription medication.

NC MedAssist is the only free mail-order pharmacy in North Carolina. Their approach allows for minimal contact for patients to receive their prescription medication. Their Free Over-The-Counter store now offers curbside pickup for their customers.

“We have served North Carolina since 1997, and we are beginning to see one of the largest influx of patients since the 2008 recession. People from all walks of life needed access to their vital prescription medicine during that time,” said Lori Giang, CEO of NC MedAssist. “We expect the same surge of patients to come from the COVID-19 crisis and we do not want to turn anyone away. That is why partnerships like Novant Health are so valuable to helping us serve each patient in need of critical medication.”

NC MedAssist hopes to raise $250,000 by May 31, 2020, to prepare for the increase in patients that will need their services.

NC MedAssist, in collaboration with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, is holding a Mobile Free Pharmacy Event in Vance County on Friday, February 21, 2020. The event will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church – 635 S. College St., Henderson – from 9 a.m. until  2 p.m.

Participants must be at least 18 years old to receive medication. No identification is required and no income requirements or residency restrictions apply.

A non-profit pharmacy founded in 1997, NC MedAssist serves all 100 North Carolina counties. The charitable organization partners with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation to offer mobile free pharmacy events on a rotating basis in the local four-county area.

“Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is pleased to bring the Over the Counter Medicine Program back to Vance County,” Executive Director Val Short stated in a recent press release. “The OTC Give Away Day is expected to have a huge impact. Our goal is to improve the health of our community, one person at a time. We know that even with insurance, many individuals cannot afford OTC products.”

According to Luce, total participation in these events depends on several factors, including the weather, but the organization “brings enough medicine to serve 1,000 and hopes to distribute it all.”

Each individual can select eight items from a “shopping list” that includes allergy medicine, digestive aids, cough and cold, children’s medication, vitamins, Tylenol and Band-Aids.

“Everyone should leave with a minimum of 10-12 items,” Luce said. “They can select eight items off the shopping list, along with a few miscellaneous items.”

In addition to partnerships, Luce explained that is the hard work and dedication of volunteers that make these events possible. “We have a great volunteer base in Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin counties. We could not do what we do without them. Our volunteers are serving those that they live and work around.”

Additional volunteers age 12 and older are needed and do not require experience or medical knowledge. “Our volunteers unload trucks and stock medicine on the table,” Luce said. “This is a great way for students to get community hours that they may need for school.”

NC MedAssist’s Health Care Resources Coming to Franklin County

NC MedAssist is holding a Mobile Free Pharmacy Event in Franklin County, NC on Friday, August 30, 2019. The event is open to any individual or family needing over-the-counter medications.

The event will be held at Louisburg Senior Citizens Center (127 Shannon Village, Louisburg, NC 27549). Participants must be at least 18 years old to receive medicine. Everyone will receive up to eight items free of charge. No identification is required.

Val Short, Executive Director of Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, said, “We are pleased that the NC MedAssist Mobile Free Pharmacy is coming to Franklin County. The Foundation is a funder for this event, which provides much-needed over-the-counter medications that can be unaffordable to many in our region.”

Mark Your Calendar: Free OTC Medicine Giveaway at Warrenton Armory

A free over the counter medicine giveaway will be held Thursday, February 21, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Warrenton Armory located at 501 US 158 Business East in Warrenton.

Items include cold, cough and flu medicine, pain and allergy relief, vitamins and children’s medicine. Items will be given away for free while supplies last.

No ID is required, but you must be 18 or older to participate.

Community Partners to Bring NC MedAssist’s Free Mobile Pharmacy to Oxford

Identification is not required to participate.
