NC MedAssist Has $55,000 Goal To Provide Inhalers To Patients

Inhale. Exhale. Repeat.

The average person takes between 12 and 20 breaths each minute, which adds up to about 22,000 each day. This simple, but essential, action goes unnoticed by so many, until there’s a problem. Like asthma.

Asthma is a condition that makes that simple, but essential, action more difficult for 670,000 North Carolinians. May 2 was observed as World Asthma Day, and a non-profit agency has a campaign open through May 16 to raise money to help those who live with asthma.

NC MedAssist serves the uninsured and low-income residents of the state, providing free medications to treat chronic illnesses like asthma, COPD. About 17 percent of  patients currently need inhalers to treat these chronic respiratory conditions. “It’s not a luxury item, it’s an item that allows them to continue breathing,” stated Jessica Yarzumbeck, director of communications and marketing for MedAssist.

The Charlotte-based agency receives all of its prescription and OTC medicine through generous in-kind donations, but inhalers have recently been removed from the list of available items, which directly affects 3,236 of its patients, Yarzumbeck said.

The agency has an immediate to provide respiratory therapies like inhalers to the patients it serves. A gift of $111 can support one patient. The goal is to be able to support 500 – making the goal $55,000.

TownTalk 04-26-21 NC MedAssist Mobile Pharmacy Visits Henderson April 30

NC MedAssist is coming to Henderson Friday, April 30 to distribute various types of over-the-counter medications and other first-aid items to residents in a drive-thru event. Online registration continues until noon on Wednesday, and that’s the best way to make sure that individuals get the medicines they need.

Kinsey Luce, mobile events and project manager for NC MedAssist, was a guest on Monday’s Town Talk. She told John C. Rose that the mobile pharmacy will bring about $100,000 in medicines to distribute. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The drive-thru format is a response to COVID-19 restrictions, she said. “We’re so excited to be back” in the area; last summer’s event in Granville County had 1,100 people come out to pick up cough and cold medicines, allergy medicines and other over-the-counter remedies.

The mobile pharmacy will be at the local Salvation Army facility, 2292 Ross Mill Road and is the result of a partnership with Triangle North Foundation.

“We’re still going to do everything we can to keep everyone safe,” Luce said, and added that all participants will be required to use facemasks. “We want to have a safe event and give out tons of free medicine.”

The program is open to individuals and families needing medications. Although no ID is required, participants must be 18 years or older to get medicines.

The advance, online registration will allow participants to choose exactly which medicines they need. “We’ll shop for your order, and it’ll be labeled and ready for you to pick up,” Luce said.

Pre-registration is not a requirement, but it would be helpful to get people in and out quickly.

NC MedAssist can also provide ongoing assistance for qualified individuals and families, she said. The enrollment process has been simplified and guidelines eased to help the uninsured get the medications they need.

No identification is required; however, all participants must wear facemasks.

This is a drive-thru service only – all participants will remain in their vehicles and volunteers will deliver their medicines. Participants are highly encouraged to preorder their over-the-counter medicine online at https://medassist.org/mobile/ and select Vance County.

Online ordering will be closed two days prior to the event. Anyone NOT able to order online should come as early as possible on April 30, Kidwell said, because the medicines will be given out on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last.

“Due to the pandemic, we had to create a new and innovative way to continue serving the community. We will be bringing close to $100,000 worth of OTC medicine to the event to be distributed to those most in need in our community,” Kidwell said. “We understand there is a pressing need, especially in the midst of allergy season. Our goal in this partnership with Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is to improve the health of the community, one family at a time.”

The medicine distribution depends on volunteers to ensure things run smoothly, Kidwell said. Community volunteers will help with pharmacy consultations, as well as sorting medicines and collecting medicines for clients.
