Calling Citizen Scientists To Take Part In 2026 Pollinator Census Aug. 21, 22

Got 15 minutes to spare next Friday or Saturday? Great!

Fifteen minutes is all it takes to take part in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census.

Organizers at the University of Georgia Extension Service have added states to the annual count of bees, butterflies, moths and other insects in an effort to get an idea about pollinator trends across the Southeast.

The Census will take place on Friday, Aug. 21 and Saturday, Aug. 22.

The local extension service will have guide sheets at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market to explain the process and how you can take part, according to Vance County  Agent Michael Ellington.

North Carolina submitted numbers for the 2023 census, along with Georgia and South Carolina; Florida came on board in 2024 and Alabama joined in 2025. This year’s count will include pollinator counts from Mississippi as well.

A total of 27,048 citizen scientists across the five states of GA, SC, FL, AL and NC counted 500,402 insect pollinators in 2025, according to information on the census website.

The setup is pretty simple: there’s a downloadable sheet to record your observations. All you need to do, really, is identify a plant in your yard or garden and watch it for 15 minutes, recording each time an insect land on that single plant.

Can’t tell a honey bee from a carpenter bee? No problem. The recording sheet has photos to help you tell the difference. Ditto for butterflies and moths.

Franklin County: Local Poultry Test Positive For Avian Flu

Franklin County has recorded its first case of H5N1 avian influenza in poultry.

Avian influenza – commonly known as bird flu – was first reported on Jan. 1, 2026, in Franklin County. Poultry in a backyard flock tested positive for the disease.

“It is important for owners of commercial birds and backyard flocks take preventive measures to keep their birds healthy and safe,” said Charles Mitchell, Franklin County Cooperative Extension Director.

Commercial and backyard bird owners should take heightened precautions to prevent the spread of avian influenza. The Center for Disease Control and the United States Department of Agriculture have resources to keep birds and their owners safe:

While human cases of bird flu are not as common, individuals handling infected birds or other infected animals should use proper personal protective equipment to reduce exposure.

Franklin Cooperative Extension’s Small Farm Boot Camp Begins Apr. 3

The Franklin County Cooperative Extension is hosting a regional Small Farm Boot Camp designed to provide information for new and beginning farmers and homesteaders and others who are looking for innovative ways to market farm or garden products.

The series will be held on Thursdays in April, beginning Apr. 3 and continuing on Apr. 10, 17 and 24. Each session will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held at the Franklin County Plaza Conference Room, 279 S. Bickett Blvd., in Louisburg.

A culminating activity that includes a local farm tour is planned for Sunday, May 11.

The deadline to register for the program is Wednesday, Apr. 2. The cost is $150.

4-H Dairy Youth Program Interest Meeting Re-Scheduled To Tuesday, Feb. 25

Youth in Warren and Franklin counties interested in showing dairy calves are invited to a 4-H Dairy Youth Program interest meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in Louisburg. This meeting was originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 20, but has been re-scheduled because of the winter storm.

The Feb. 25 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Annex in Louisburg.

During the 8-week program, youth will learn about dairy calves and preparing them for a local show. In addition to learning more about handling livestock, participants will gain knowledge about communication, public speaking, record-keeping, teamwork and problem solving.

Bi-weekly practices will begin on Monday, April 7.

Cooperative Extension “Winter Webinar” Series Discusses Small Ruminants

If you’ve always wanted to learn about goats and sheep and what kind of care they need, join the N.C. Cooperative Extension for its “Winter Webinar” series.

There are five different webinars that will take place via Zoom, and each one discusses different aspects of the care and management of small ruminants.

The first webinar is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 7; webinars will be held monthly through March. Each session has a unique registration link.

4-H Dairy Program Interest Meeting April 25 For Warren, Franklin Youth

A 4-H Dairy Program interest meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 25 at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension office, 103 S. Bickett Blvd. in Louisburg.

Youngsters and their parents who want to learn more about the project are welcome to attend and get answers to questions they may have.

The program spans eight weeks, during which participants will have the chance to learn about dairy calves as they prepare for a local livestock show. In addition to learning about livestock handling, the youth will learn problem solving, effective communication and public speaking, record keeping, teamwork and more.

N.C. Cooperative Extension Scholarship Open For Those In Business-Related Field Of Study

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association is accepting applications for the 2023 Herter-O’Neal Scholarship. This scholarship is open to students pursuing an associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree in a business-related field of study or who are enrolled in a diploma program that results in a degree. The statewide winner will be awarded $1,000 for tuition and/or books. District finalists will receive $250.

The Herter-O’Neal Scholarship is awarded each year to honor the work and dedication of Edith Herter and Frances O’Neal, founding members of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association.  NCCEAPA membership is comprised of North Carolina Cooperative Extension administrative assistants in 100 counties, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, N.C. State University and N.C.  A&T State University.

Forestry Field Day June 24 In Oxford

A Forestry Field Day is scheduled for Friday, June 24 to help area landowners with best practice strategies to enhance their woodland resources. Participants will learn first-hand about the possible benefits of forest management techniques of herbicide application and prescribed fires.

This free event will begin at 2 p.m. at the N.C. Forest Service office in Granville County, located at 911 Hillsboro St, Oxford.

From there, the group will proceed to two different field sites that show the results of the respective practices. Transportation to the field sites will be available, or participants may travel in personal vehicles.

The sponsors of the Field Day are the N.C. Forest Service office for Granville County, along with the N.C. Cooperative Extension County Centers in Granville and Vance counties.

NCDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Application Period Open Now Through Mar. 4 At Noon

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is accepting grant applications for the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Nonprofits and government agencies have until noon on Mar. 4 to submit applications.

Applicants can submit a draft application for staff review by Jan. 26 to gain feedback on their grant proposals. A .pdf of the draft application should be sent to jenni.keith@ncagr.gov.

The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program aims to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in the marketplace. It is managed by the department, through funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“In 2021, we awarded $2.9 million for 16 projects across the state, which included one-time funds of $1.6 million from the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. We anticipate $1.2 million in funding this year,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “The success and growth of specialty crops are important as North Carolina agriculture continues to diversify and as the industry inches closer to the $100 billion mark in economic impact.”

The department will accept grant requests up to $200,000 from nonprofit organizations, academia, commodity associations, state and local government agencies, colleges and universities. Grants are not available for projects that directly benefit or provide a profit to a single organization, institution or individual.

Eligible projects must involve fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, culinary herbs and spices, medicinal plants, nursery, floriculture or horticulture crops.

Four-County 4-H Poultry Show Flies In To Vance Regional Farmer’s Market Oct. 23

The 2021 Four County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Vance County Regional Farmer’s Market.

Check-in for youth and poultry will begin at 3 p.m. and the show will start at 4:15 p.m., according to information from Meg Wyatt, Franklin County 4-H agent.

Following the presentation of awards, the auction is scheduled to begin around 6:30 p.m. This year, Easter Eggers and Barred Rocks will be available at the auction.

The farmer’s market is located at 210 South Park Drive, Henderson.
