What Do You Do When There Is A Livestock Emergency?

According to information obtained from Matthew Place with Warren County Cooperative Extension, there will be a webinar January 14th to address the questions of what to do when there is a livestock emergency.

Hosted by the Warren County Cooperative Extension, you’ll hear from Dr. Michelle Bouchey, DVM from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.  The “Dealing With Livestock Emergencies” webinar will take place January 14th at 1 p.m.  Zoom will be the platform.

The local offices of N.C. Cooperative Extension will host a weekly online Garden Chat beginning Thursday, September 10, 2020. The public is invited to join Master Gardener℠ volunteers from the surrounding area each Thursday afternoon for a fun and engaging conversation about timely garden topics.

Each session begins at 2 p.m. and will feature an informative presentation on subjects such as plants for fall color, sustainable landscaping, selecting groundcovers and fighting fire ants. Seasonal gardening tips and helpful web resources will also be shared.

These interactive sessions will last about 45 minutes and will include time for participants to get questions answered about their own gardening challenges. The Garden Chats are hosted by the Master Gardener volunteers of Warren, Vance, Granville and Person Counties.

CFAP Program Information Session Scheduled for Local Farmers

Local farmers are encouraged to participate in an information session on the Coronavirus Food and Agriculture Assistance (CFAP) Program, scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2020. This event will begin at 9 a.m. and will be held virtually, with registration required via EventBrite.

The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) provides vital financial assistance to producers of agricultural commodities suffering a five-percent-or-greater price decline, or who have had losses due to market supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 and face additional significant market costs. USDA is accepting applications now through August 28, 2020.

Additional crops have been added to the list of eligible commodities. Livestock, wool and dairy farms are also eligible for participation. Visit farmers.gov/cfap to view listings of eligible crops and livestock. Farmers can also get information about what documentation is needed for the application on the CFAP website, farmers.gov/cfap.

NC Cooperative Extension, Granville County Welcomes New 4-H Agent

A new 4-H agent has been hired for N.C. Cooperative Extension, Granville County. Lina Lue Howe begins work on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, coming to the Granville County Center with previous experience as a 4-H Agent in Vance County.

“We are very happy that Lina is joining the Granville County team,” says Paul Westfall, County Extension Director for Granville County Extension. “She brings experience and passion for 4-H to Granville County, plus she is a Granville County resident. We are looking forward to her work with 4-H members and leaders in her home county.”

Ms. Howe’s primary duties will be to manage and lead the 4-H program in Granville County, including recruiting and working with 4-H leaders, establishing and maintaining community 4-H Clubs, conducting school enrichment programs such as 4-H Embryology, and planning and conducting 4-H Summer Fun programs for youth.

Ms. Howe was active in Granville County 4-H as a member and graduated from the J.F. Webb School of Health and Life Sciences. She went on to study Agriculture Extension Education with a minor in Animal Science at N.C. State University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in May 2018.  She served as a 4-H Intern in Wilson County while at N.C. State.

A “Meet and Greet” is planned for Friday, Jan. 3 from 3 until 5 p.m. 4-H leaders and members, community leaders and the public are invited to stop by the N.C. Cooperative Extension Center, located at 125 Oxford Loop Road, to welcome Ms. Howe to her new position.

Woodland Owners Invited to ‘Marketing Timber’ Workshop

Woodland owners are invited to a Marketing Timber Workshop on Thursday, August 29, 2019, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Granville County Expo Center (4185 US 15, Oxford, NC). This workshop is co-sponsored by the NC Forest Service and NC Cooperative Extension.

For most woodland owners, a timber sale is a once or twice in a lifetime event. With such limited experience, it can be difficult to be certain that the price is fair and that the harvest is conducted properly. At this workshop, woodland owners will get advice from the experts on how to navigate the process successfully.

Presenters will include an NCSU forestry specialist, a woodland owner, and a Registered Consulting Forester.

This is a free event, but registration is requested.

Master Gardener Volunteers of Vance & Warren Co. to Hold Open House

The Master Gardener volunteers of Warren and Vance County will hold an Open House on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the NC Cooperative Extension office (158 Rafters Lane, Warrenton). Those who are interested in joining the volunteer program are invited to attend.

The Open House will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and information will be available about the upcoming training program. The training program consists of approximately 40 hours of classes and will be offered on Tuesday mornings beginning in late July.

Upon completion of training, participants are required to contribute 40 hours of volunteer service toward various Master Gardener projects and outreach activities.

Successful Small Farms Conference to Feature Seed Exchange, Informational Sessions

The popular regional Successful Small Farms Opportunities conference will be held at the Louisburg College campus in Louisburg on Saturday, February 16, 2019, from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Topics include the new farm bill and how it affects small farmers; blueberry production and marketing; high-tunnel greenhouses; Industrial Hemp: regulations and growers panel; agritourism opportunities on your farm and farm liability, small farm enterprise budgets; developing a farm commercial kitchen and more.

In addition, there will be a free seed exchange again this year for participants. There will be a small fee to participate in the conference.

NC Coop. Extension to Hold Blueberry Workshop for New & Seasoned Growers Alike

NC Cooperative Extension is conducting a blueberry workshop on Saturday, February 16, 2019, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at 2292 US 158, Oxford, NC (watch for signs). This workshop will cover topics such as site analysis and soil preparation, variety selection, proper pruning techniques and other cultural practices used to grow blueberries.

You will have the opportunity to practice your blueberry pruning techniques, so bring your pruners. Bill Cline, NCSU Blueberry Specialist, will present the program and be available to answer any questions you have about blueberry production.

‘Know It, Control It’ to Help Warren Residents Manage Blood Pressure

NC Cooperative Extension-Warren County is offering a new high blood pressure management program for adults created by the Community and Clinical Connections for Prevention and Health Branch of the North Carolina Division of Public Health. “Know It, Control It” is a community-based blood pressure management program designed to help participants self-monitor their blood pressure and make healthy lifestyle changes to control high blood pressure. Trained blood pressure coaches teach this program using evidence-based strategies to manage cardiovascular disease.

“High blood pressure is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease in the United States,” said the American Heart Association (AHA). “Knowing your blood pressure numbers can help you take action NOW to prevent or delay the development of more serious complications.”

Almost one out of every three adults in the United States – 29% or about 75 million people – has been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Among adults 65 years and older, two out of three have high blood pressure and half of them do not have it under control. “All adults should consult with a health care provider, learn their blood pressure numbers, learn to self-monitor their blood pressure and take steps to get healthy,” spoken on behalf of the AHA.

“Know It, Control It” classes are open to people who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. During each class, blood pressure coaches will lead a discussion on a healthy habit that will help participants control their blood pressure. On class days, the blood pressure coach will also assist each participant with measuring and logging his/her blood pressure with the goal of having them become proficient at tracking and measuring their blood pressure on their own.
