SportsTalk: Local High School Basketball Prepares For Tipoff

Area high school basketball teams will be tipping off the local basketball season in a few days and coaches have high expectations for the season.

At Vance Charter, head basketball coach Taron Downey is optimistic about the Knights.  “The future is bright,” Downey said on Wednesday’s SportsTalk. “We have young guys but one of the best groups I’ve had,” Downey continued.  Only three seniors will return to the Knights this season.  While he has high expectations of his team he knows that teams from Voyager and Henderson Collegiate will pose problems.  “Our young guys don’t know what to expect.  If I can get a guy to make a jump shot we will be OK,” Downey stated.  They start off the season with a matchup on the road against East Wake Academy on Monday night.  Tomorrow (Thursday) they will take part in a Night Out with The Knights, 6pm, at the Vance Charter Gym with plenty of food and some fun on the court to give players, students, parents and kids a chance to enjoy a fun evening.

J.F. Webb’s head coach, Alex Tharpe, expects his team will improve from last year’s 14-10 regular season record.  While they made the state playoffs last year, he says it will be a somewhat different team this year.  “We will have a different look.  We want to run and push the tempo,” Tharpe said on Wednesday’s SportsTalk.  Of course J.F. Webb will have to contend with a strong Southern Durham team this season that usually dominates the conference.  The Warriors will return six seniors, one of whom is a starter.  Webb is also preparing for the South Granville holiday basketball tournament next month.  Before that can happen, they must prepare for opening night this Friday at Oxford Prep.  “It’s one of the best Oxford Prep teams I’ve seen,” Tharpe said of his opening game opponent.

SportsTalk: JF Webb’s Burnette To Play College Lacrosse At Sewanee

Henderson’s Beau Burnette’s list of activities and accolades while at JF Webb High School is quite impressive. He played five sports: lacrosse, golf, baseball, football and basketball.  Burnette was the Triangle North Conference Player of the Year his junior and senior seasons, academic all conference all four years, all conference in lacrosse, football and golf and was awarded the Tony Cullen Scholarship Award.  While this was happening, Burnette developed a love of history and maintained a 4.29 GPA.

Burnette, the son of Scott and Caroline Burnette, will take his love of lacrosse to Sewanee, whose official name is The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee – where he has received a scholarship. He appeared on Thursday’s SportsTalk to discuss his high school career, love of lacrosse and his upcoming college experience.

While not playing summer travel ball, Burnette isn’t taking the summer completely off. “I’m lifting weights and running,” Burnette said as he prepares for the start of his college career on August 19.

So how does a young man handle five sports and academics?  “I try to keep a good balance between practice and grades,” Burnette said.  While he played many sports at JF Webb, Burnette will limit his college career to just lacrosse while in college.  He said he enjoyed the camaraderie of the other sports he played but the speed of lacrosse combined with the physicality of the sport is what he loves and that’s what he will concentrate on as well as his academics.

Burnette will major in history at Sewanee.

TownTalk: Timberlake Organizes JF Webb Class Of 1970 Reunion

The students who graduated from J.F. Webb High School in 1970 are the last students to be known as Webb Wildcats. Beginning the next year, the Oxford high school mascot became the Warrior.

Frank Timberlake is a member of the Class of 1970 and he is putting the word out to fellow Wildcats about the 50th reunion celebration that is scheduled to take place – after a 2-year delay – in early June.

Timberlake still lives locally and he said he has the “wonderful – or dubious – job” of trying to reach out to classmates to spread the word about the reunion, which is set for June 4, 2022.

“This year, the Class of “70 is turning 70,” Timberlake told John C. Rose on Town Talk Wednesday. He said many classmates have remained in touch over the years, but he wants to try to reach those folks who may have moved away from the immediate area to let them know about the reunion.

He also would like to know about classmates who have passed away, because there will be a special tribute during the reunion to remember them.

For the group that does convene for the reunion, Timberlake said, it will be just a low-key time. There will be cornhole boards and barbecue, he said, but mostly, the attendees “just want to spend quality time visiting.”

South Granville and JF Webb Create Sharp Business Plans

Two Granville County high schools scored big in a statewide contest of the Virtual Enterprise International (VEI) Business Plan Competition. South Granville High won first and third place honors, and JF Webb High placed second in the recent competition.

The VEI teams create, compose and present a ‘real world’  business plan to a panel of business and industry professionals, according to information from Dr. Stan Winborne, GCPS Assistant Superintendent for Operations & Human Resources and public information officer. These teams of students ‘pitch’ their virtual firm’s ideas and compete with other groups of students from across the state.  Based on strict international criteria measuring the quality and effectiveness of the plan, the volunteer judges determine the winners, Winborne explained.

South Granville took first-place honors with the virtual firm, “Adrenaline Rush,” which operates much like a virtual Airbnb. The firm developed and marketed virtual vacation rental properties around the country.  The team of students has purchased (with virtual money) and renovated six properties in the United States:  two in Niagara Falls, two in Yosemite Park, and two in the Grand Canyon.

Second-place honors went to the team at JF Webb, which presented the business plan for its virtual firm, “AceIt.” This plan involved the design, creation and marketing of a variety of virtual printing and promotional products.  This team, under the direction of teacher Marcy Winborne, has recently begun translating some of their designs into real-world applications for its school.

Third place also went to South Granville for its firm’s plan called “Carnava”, which runs a virtual carnival-food themed food truck.  Virtual menu items include deep-fried Oreos, ice cream and a selection of pies.

Mark Jones teaches VE at South Granville High School. “Of the many courses I’ve taught in my 15 years in education, Virtual Enterprises is truly my favorite,” Jones said. “The students who enroll in VEI have the opportunity to not only travel to different states, but also to interact with other students around the globe who are doing exactly what they are doing daily.”

GCPS has partnered with VE since 2010. In that time, more than 500 students have participated in the program, which is offered at all three high schools.

Funding and support for VE is provided through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) led by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Myrick and Angela Salisbury, secondary coordinator and CTE instructional management coordinator. February is Career and Technical Education month.

Superintendent Dr. Alisa McLean said she is proud of the teams’ accomplishments at the competition. “I am so incredibly proud of our talented students’ performance in this incredibly rigorous and cutting-edge program,” McLean stated. “Congratulations to our students and the wonderful teachers and administrators who helped make this possible,” she added.

The Virtual Enterprise International program is guided by an industry-driven, educational framework in which students launch and manage the growth of a company in a digital, international economy of 7,000+ student-run businesses in 40+ countries. Students learn how their skills, knowledge, and mindset as employees, workgroup members, and department teams contribute to the success and challenges in meeting company goals.

JF Webb Names New Head Basketball Coach

J.F. Webb High School recently announced the hiring of its new high school basketball coach, Alex Tharp.

A native of Orange, Virginia, Coach Tharp played high school basketball at Orange County High School. After graduation, he attended Shooting for Greatness Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina for one year of post-graduation play. During his year at Shooting for Greatness, he excelled in both the classroom and on the basketball court. This led to a scholarship to continue his basketball career at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

He transferred to St. Andrews University in his junior year, had a successful season and was looking forward to a promising senior year. During the second game of his senior year, he broke his ankle. This injury ended his playing career, but it opened the door to his coaching career.

Alex graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and began his teaching career in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He also served as the assistant varsity men’s basketball coach at Pasquotank County High School.

In 2018, Coach Tharp accepted a position as an assistant basketball coach at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He shared that while the college coaching experience was exciting, it was not the right fit for him. He wanted to return to coaching high school athletes. This led him to Granville County.

Alex is a fifth-grade teacher at Tar River Elementary School and was an assistant basketball coach at Granville Central High School last year. Granville Central’s head coach, Michael McDaniel, shared, “he has a great basketball mind, and I think he could be a great fit at Oxford Webb.”

Coach Tharp is excited about the opportunity to become the head basketball coach at J.F. Webb. He shared, “I am ready to bring a new energy to the Warriors basketball program while getting the opportunity to work with a group of amazing young men. My goal is to help these young men be prepared for the next phase of their lives after high school, whether that be continuing their basketball career at the college level, going to college as a student to obtain a degree, or going into the workforce to immediately impact society. I cannot wait to get to work and help these young men reach their full potential on and off the court.”

JF Webb, School of Health & Life Sciences to Merge Into Single High School

This past week, the final graduating class of JF Webb School of Health and Life Sciences walked across the stage. Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, the school will merge into a single high school on the campus.

While this marks the closing of one school, it signals the dramatic transformation of the entire school campus. JF Webb High School will begin the next academic year with the school’s focus and organization redesigned, to what will be known moving forward as, “The Warrior Way.”

The Warrior Way school redesign will keep all course offerings and special programs associated with the School of Health and Life Sciences and offer an additional NEW focus on providing students the opportunity to earn college credits through VGCC.

Much like an Early College program, students at JF Webb will be provided a streamlined track for dual enrollment at the college’s main campus just seven miles away. The school will offer special guidance and counseling to provide students the opportunity to earn enough credits to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree.

Students will also have the opportunity to earn other specialty degrees and certificates related to a variety of careers. All of this will be provided at no cost to families – textbooks and tuition will all be included. The school is also in the process of planning regular shuttle service to and from JF Webb and the VGCC main campus on a daily basis.

JF Webb Principal Amy Rice offered her comments, saying “Warrior pride runs deep in our community. I am super excited about the changes going on at our school. The Warrior Way provides clear pathways forward for every student, no matter their interest. However, one thing all pathways have in common is a focus on post-secondary education. Every graduate from our school will have a clear advantage in moving on to the next step in their life’s plan. Whether it be a career in the world of biomedical sciences as a scientist or medical professional, a leadership position in business or industry, a well-paid job in one of the countless skilled trades, or service in the military, JF Webb is the place to launch those plans. The school has an amazing history and an even brighter future. If you haven’t checked us out lately, it’s time to give us another look.”

In addition to the restructuring of the school’s organization, the community will also notice significant upgrades and improvements to the physical campus as well.

J.F. Webb Public Hearing Guidelines

Granville County Public Schools would like to make sure certain guidelines are in place and met at the upcoming J.F. Webb High School and J.F. Webb High School Health and Life Sciences Public Hearing scheduled for Tuesday, October 9, 2018.

It will take place at the J.F. Webb High School cafeteria.

In a news release, the following guidelines were provided:

-Guest speakers must “Sign up” to speak (up to 30 minutes prior to the 7pm Public Hearing start time);

-The guest speaker sheet will be pulled to close sign-up at 7pm;

-Guests will have 4 minutes to speak;

-The hearing is scheduled to last until 8:30 p.m. If there are still guests who signed up waiting to comment at 8:30 p.m, the Board can decide by majority vote whether to extend the hearing or make some other accommodation;

-The Board of Education will only listen to guests, as no responses or decisions will be provided that evening;

-The Board of Education will take the public input and study information under advisement and will deliberate and make a final decision at a later public meeting.

The Vikings and Warriors enter Friday night’s match up in Oxford in the same position they have been in for many years: struggling to avoid a last place finish in their conference. Northern Vance is 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Carolina 1A/2A, while Webb is 2-7 overall (thanks to a nonconference victory over 1A KIPP Pride) and also 1-5 in the NCC. Both teams got their one conference win over 1A Louisburg, and both teams missed their best chance at another conference win by falling victim to scrappy 1A Granville Central — the Panthers beat Webb 20-14 and Northern was shut out last week at home 21-0.

Webb’s Warriors have an edge over the Vikings on paper, scoring an average 17 points per game and allowing 29. In spite of some lopsided losses and a season opening shutout loss, the Warriors have not been shut out in league play, and they came within 4 points of upsetting Warren County (losing 28-25). Even though Northern can move the ball, they struggle to put points on the board, repeatedly stalling in opponents’ red zones. The Vikings average under 7 points per game, and their defense, although capable of stopping passing attacks, still allows 30 points per game, mostly on the ground. The Vikings have been shut out 4 times this season, twice by conference opponents.

Northern has won this matchup the past three seasons, but this might be Webb’s year to break that streak. Although Louisburg seems destined to lock up last place in the Northern Carolina, the loser of Friday’s game in Oxford will likely finish last among the 2A members.

J.F. Webb High School Campus

Last week, on Tuesday, July 12th, the Granville County Board of Education held a special called meeting to take up discussion about the future of the J.F. Webb High School campus.  Superintendent Dr. Dorwin Howard presented information to the Board members regarding demographics and other information about Webb High School and the School of Health and Life Sciences which is on the Webb campus.

Following the discussion, the Board arrived at consensus to issue the following proclamation: The Granville County Board of Education and the Granville County Public Schools Administration are committed to maintaining the two distinctive schools that comprise the J.F. Webb High School campus, and to take continuous action to improve the academic achievement, student behavior, discipline and safety for all students.

Board Chair, Dr. G. Thomas Houlihan, also offered these additional comments, “Tonight the Granville County Board of Education adopted a statement that clearly supports the continuation of the School of Health and Life Sciences on the JF Webb campus.  The Board is concerned that rumors in the community assumed the school would be merged with JF Webb High School next year- this is in fact not the case, and furthermore, there are no plans to merge the schools anytime soon.  We look forward to the continued success of this school and support the efforts of all of our schools to serve all students to the best of their ability.”

Superintendent Dr. Dorwin L. Howard, Sr. also commented on the discussion, saying, “We are committed to providing the best possible education to all of the students at the JF Webb campus.  We will continue to work closely with the leadership teams at both schools to improve the academic achievement, student behavior, discipline and safety for all students.  Warrior pride is strong, and the future is bright for all students on that campus.”
