H-V Rec. & Parks’ Indoor Facilities Remain Closed; Most Outdoor Parks/Trails Open

Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen announced on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, that North Carolina will remain in Safer at Home Phase 2 for three more weeks. During this time, Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department will remain closed to the public.

We understand the disappointment. Recreation is our business and our responsibility, therefore we are keeping our facilities, parks and playground equipment “closed” but will continue to encourage you to utilize the walking trails and tracks we have to offer. We are asking our Henderson-Vance community to continue to practice social distancing recommendations in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19. 

The current status of Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks facilities includes:

Closed: 

➢ Aycock Recreation Center 

  • Aycock Aquatic Center

➢ Old Aycock Gym – Indoor Facility

➢ Fox Pond Park

➢ All Satellite Sites 

  • First Presbyterian Church 
  • Vance County Senior Center

➢ All Playground Equipment and Structures 

Remaining Open: 

➢ All Outdoor Parks, Trails and Tracks excluding Fox Pond Park 

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will monitor the situation and make an assessment on when it is safe to reopen some or all of the affected facilities.

H-V Rec. & Parks Offering DIY Crafty Kids Kits for Summer Entertainment

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department presents DIY (Do it Yourself) Crafty Kids. Participants will have the opportunity to purchase craft bags that will include crafts, coloring pages and stickers.

Drive-through pick up will be held on Friday, June 19 and June 26, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Aycock Recreation Center located at 307 Carey Chapel Rd. in Henderson.

The cost is $5 per craft bundle and can be purchased online at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/ or in-person on the day of the event, but you must bring exact cash.

‘Virtual Bingo’ Offers Fun, Home Delivery of Prizes for Seniors 55+

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department will hold a community-wide “Virtual Bingo” for seniors ages 55 or better on Friday, May 22, 2020, from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m.

Participants can join Virtual Bingo by computer or phone.

Participants must contact Crystal Allen by phone (252) 431-6091 or email callen@ci.henderson.nc.us to register for Virtual Bingo by Friday, May 15.

Prizes will be delivered to participants’ homes following social distancing protocols.

A statement from the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department:

Although NC Governor Roy Cooper issued a “soft opening” throughout the state, the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department will remain closed to the public at this time.

While the order does reference the opening of parks, it is recommended that additional precautions be taken for community gatherings and that playgrounds remain closed.

Recreation is our business and our responsibility, therefore we are keeping our parks and playground equipment “closed” but will continue to encourage you to utilize the walking trails and tracks we have to offer.

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department is sponsoring a Mother’s Day Poetry Contest. Participants should submit one original poem about mothers and/or Mother’s Day by email to tgoolsby@ci.henderson.nc.us by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

The winner of the poetry contest will receive a Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks goodie bag and will be announced on Facebook Live on Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m.

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will host a FREE “Paint With DP” Facebook live session on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at 3 p.m. Tune in to the Henderson-Vance Athletics Facebook page to participate or just watch.

Once the painting session is completed, participants can submit a picture of their masterpiece. The best painting will receive a $25 gift card.

As a result of the Executive Order issued by Governor Roy Cooper, which went into effect on Monday, March 30, 2020, at 5 p.m., the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department has closed all playground structures and outdoor basketball courts.

We will monitor the situation and make an assessment on when it is safe to reopen some or all of the affected facilities.
