Henderson-Vance Rec and Parks Welcomes Curry Hall

Curry Hall is the newest member of the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department. Curry is from Burlington, NC, and has worked in local government for over five years. He worked as a police officer in Burlington and Hillsborough before switching to the parks and recreation career field full-time. Curry has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from UNC-Greensboro and Master’s degree in Public Administration from Liberty University. He enjoys hiking with his fiancée, Morgan, and his Golden Retriever fur baby, Georgia, along the Haw River. Curry has a love for outdoor recreation and natural resource education.

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks News for March; Lots To Do

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department is gearing up for a busy spring with activities for the young and not-so-young residents in the community. Below is a listing of activities, some centered around upcoming holidays:

Thursday, Mar. 11 – St. Patrick’s Day Crafty Kids is for children ages 4-8. This event will begin at 6 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center and will be open to the first 12 participants to register. The cost is $5.00 per participant.  Register online at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/ or at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Rd., Henderson.  Participants must have an adult over the age of 18 with them at all times to help them with the crafts. Only the participant and one guardian will be allowed in the event due to COVID-19 restrictions. Anyone older than 5 years and are required to wear a mask at all times. Saturday, Mar. 27 – The annual Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department Egg Hunt from 9 a.m. to noon at Aycock Recreation Center. This event is open to the first 100 participants who register. Bring baskets to collect eggs and a camera to take photos! Participants also will receive a craft to take home. Everyone over the age of 5 years is required to wear a mask at all times. Register by Sunday, Mar. 21, 2021 at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/  or at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Rd. Thursday, Apr. 1 – Aqua Egg Hunt from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center for children ages 17 and younger. All swim levels are welcome, life vests are provided if needed. Parents are required to be in the pool area. Please bring a container to collect eggs. All eggs will be traded in for prize bags at the end of the hunt. Mondays at 4 p.m. – The Youth Services Unit of the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks continues to host a virtual “Know Your Rights” workshop on Mondays at 4 p.m. Learn how to protect your civil liberties and your basic rights in the sessions, live on the Henderson Vance Outreach Facebook page. For more information, contact Shantel Hargrove at 252-430-0382 or cac@ci.henderson.nc.us.

Mar. 2-Apr. 22 – Arthritis Exercise Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 2, from 2:30pm-3:30pm. This is a FREE low-impact, joint safe program developed for people with arthritis. This class has been proven to decrease pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. This class is also suitable for every fitness level.  Join by logging on to Facebook Live on the Henderson Vance Special Programs page or at Aycock Recreation Center.  Participants must preregister to participate at Aycock Recreation Center. Thursdays in April, May and June – Bingo for Seniors (age 55 or older). Participants can play Virtual Bingo by computer or phone or in person at the Aycock Recreation Center. There are 10 slots available at the recreation center.  Participants must contact Crystal Allen at 252.431.6091 callen@ci.henderson.nc.us by the Thursday before the scheduled Bingo to register or for more information.

Vance County Special Olympics NC Plunge in Place

Special Olympics North Carolina Plunge in Place is a fundraiser that allows participants to donate to Vance County Special Olympics.  During Plunge Week (Sunday, February 21-Friday, February 26, 2021), you can plunge into a pool, ice bath or the ocean, run through sprinklers, play with super soakers or dump a frigid bottle of water over your head.  Share your Plunge on social media with #findyourfreeze or send to plunge@sonc.net.  Tune in to the Live Plunge Celebration on Saturday, February 27, 2021.   Participants can register at https://give.classy.org/SOVance.  For more information, please contact Crystal Allen at 252.431.6091 (callen@ci.henderson.nc.us).

Volunteers Needed for Vance County Teen Court

Teen Court Club Volunteers – Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department’s Youth Services Unit is looking for adult volunteers and youth volunteers ages 14-18 for Teen Court Club.  Teen Court Club is a group of youth volunteers that are trained under adult supervision to perform several duties during the Teen Court process. Youth volunteers serve as Defense Attorneys, Prosecutors, Bailiffs, Clerks and Jury Members.   Adult volunteer roles include Jury Facilitator, Court Room Monitor, Attorney Coach, Teen Court Trainer or Guest Speaker.  For more information, please contact Jaleel Johnson at 252.431.6099 (jjohnson@ci.henderson.nc.us).

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department announces the following upcoming events:

Water Aerobics: Water Aerobics is a program that uses the buoyant qualities of water to enhance physical fitness through exercises. It is a medium-impact water class designed to provide cardiovascular conditioning, improved muscle tone, and improved balance. It is a total body workout without the stress of land-based exercise. Non-swimmers welcome!

Classes will be held at 8:15 – 9 a.m., 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning on Monday, January 4, 2021. Classes are $1 for members, $2 for nonmembers and will be limited to 10 participants.

Masks must be worn at all times in the facility but not while in the pool.

Yoga: Yoga classes will begin on Thursday, January 7, 2021. These sessions are based on Basic Yoga techniques to inspire physical, mental and spiritual peace from within.

Classes will be held on Thursdays from 6:15 – 7 p.m. Classes are $1 for members, $2 for nonmembers and will be limited to 10 participants.

Park Reopening

Jackson Street Park (325 Breckenridge Street, Henderson) is now open. Please follow Henderson Vance on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter for updates on the future reopening of Fox Pond Park (467 Vicksboro Rd.).

All park patrons must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Mass gathering limit of 50 people outdoors
  • Wear mask/face covering outdoors if not possible to consistently be six feet from non-household members.

The Aycock Recreation Center announces its new hours of operation:

Monday – Thursday

Open: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., 1 – 3:30 p.m.,  6 – 8 p.m.

Closed: 12 – 1 p.m., 3:30 – 6 p.m.

Friday

Open: 8 – 12 p.m., 1 – 5 p.m., 6 – 8 p.m.

Closed: 12 – 1 p.m., 5 – 6 p.m.

Saturday

Paint With DP

Free ‘Paint With DP’ Sessions Scheduled for Nov.

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will feature FREE “Paint With DP” Facebook live sessions. Tune in to participate or just watch on the Henderson-Vance Athletics Facebook page.

The live sessions will be on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 28, 2020, at 2 p.m.

You can now come in to paint in-person at Aycock Recreation Center. The registration fee is $20 and includes all needed supplies. You can register at Aycock Recreation Center or online at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/. There are only 10 slots available.

Once the painting is completed, participants can submit pictures of their masterpieces to Darius Pitt at dpitt@ci.henderson.nc.us or on Facebook Messenger. The best painting will receive a $25 gift card.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department announces upcoming events, online registration:

Fortnite Tournament-Extended Registration: Want to win some V-Bucks? Play in the first Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks online single-elimination Fortnite tournament. Youth ages 7-17 team up with three of your friends in a Battle Royal match. Each player on the winning team of the tournament will win 2,800 V-Bucks.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department will host Bingo for Seniors, ages 55 or better, on Thursdays during the months of October, November and December from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m.

Bingo will not be held on October 29, November 26 and December 24, 2020.

Participants will be able to join Virtual Bingo by computer, phone, or at the Aycock Recreation Center. There are only 10 spots available.

Prizes will be delivered to your home using social distancing practices.

Home Delivery Trick-or-Treating, ‘Trail of Terror’ to Offer Halloween Fun

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department announces two of its upcoming Halloween events:

Trick or Treat Social Distancing – The first 50 participants to meet the following requirements will receive a FREE Trick or Treat bag of goodies at their home: 12 years old or under, live in Vance County and sign up by 12 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2020. Trick or Treat Social Distancing starts at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

There is no cost to participate, but participants must complete a program evaluation after the event.

The cost of the event is $5 per vehicle.
