On the Home and Garden Show with Vance Co. Cooperative Extension:

  • Vance County Regional Farmers Market is open on Saturday from 8am-1pm.
  • Fall Vegetable Garden Workshop on September 30th, at 6:30pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. Led by Wayne Rowland.
    • Register for this workshop by calling the Vance County Cooperative Extension at (252) 438-8188.
  • Soil Samples are still Free of charge. Collect them now.
  • Now is a good time to order your Spring Flowering Bulbs.
  • There is still time to renovate your Tall Fescue Lawn. From now until October 1st. Use a 3-variety fescue mix when renovating.
  • If you haven’t applied your fertilizer to your Tall Fescue Lawn, you need to apply one pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet by the end of this month.
  • Check you crops for insects and maintain good weed control.

  • Get your equipment ready to start seeds indoors, Grow lights, media, starting trays
  • Get a good quality grow light if you will be trying to start seeds indoors.
  • Clean and sharpen your pruning equipment
  • Get ready to prune grapevines.
  • Check your house plants for disease and insects,dust with a soft cloth
  • Treat lawns for broadleaf weeds as soon as weather is favorable.
  • Check stored fruits and vegetables
  • Consider using granular weed preventers in flower, shrub and even vegetable beds.

On the Home and Garden Show with Vance Co. Cooperative Ext.

  • Take photos of your garden to know how to rotate planting of vegetables next spring
  • Conduct your annual shade tree inspection. Use a pair of binoculars to inspect the trunk and limbs for defects, injuries, rot, broken limbs, etc. and contact a professional if you see anything questionable.
  • If you have stored sweet potatoes make sure they are located where they will not freeze
  • Consider building a small greenhouse this winter that can be used to start seed and raise transplants for next year’s garden. Simple kits are available from various sources.
  • Purchase a NC Christmas tree this year
  • Continue planting – bulbs, pansies, perennials, trees, shrubs
  • Now is the time to collect soil samples. Get samples to us by 5 pm Wed, 11/23 for delivery before fee season. 6 week analysis. Dec 1 fee goes to $4 per sample
  • Keep leaves off of seedling grass
  • Make a compost bin if you don’t have one already

  • Vegetables that can be planted now collards, turnips, beets, snap beans squash broccoli,
  • Pull or spray microstegium soon. It will set seed in a couple of weeks which makes the infestation much worse next year.
  • Control cabbage loopers, cabbage worms, in cole crops with Dipel or Sevin
  • Plant tall fescue NOW.
  • Weed your strawberry beds. Every weed you control now will help in weeding your strawberries next spring
  • Remove fruiting canes from your blackberry patch.
  • Now is great time to take your soil test
  • Avoid pruning. Wait until late November at the earliest.
  • Provide irrigation soon after planting any fall vegetables if rain is not forecast within 3 days of planting.
  • Leaves will be falling before you know it, so go ahead and build a compost bin to hold them.
