  • Get your equipment ready to start seeds indoors, Grow lights, media, starting trays
  • Get a good quality grow light if you will be trying to start seeds indoors.
  • Clean and sharpen your pruning equipment
  • Get ready to prune grapevines.
  • Check your house plants for disease and insects,dust with a soft cloth
  • Treat lawns for broadleaf weeds as soon as weather is favorable.
  • Check stored fruits and vegetables
  • Consider using granular weed preventers in flower, shrub and even vegetable beds.

  • Take photos of your garden to know how to rotate planting of vegetables next spring
  • Conduct your annual shade tree inspection. Use a pair of binoculars to inspect the trunk and limbs for defects, injuries, rot, broken limbs, etc. and contact a professional if you see anything questionable.
  • If you have stored sweet potatoes make sure they are located where they will not freeze
  • Consider building a small greenhouse this winter that can be used to start seed and raise transplants for next year’s garden. Simple kits are available from various sources.
  • Purchase a NC Christmas tree this year
  • Continue planting – bulbs, pansies, perennials, trees, shrubs
  • Now is the time to collect soil samples. Get samples to us by 5 pm Wed, 11/23 for delivery before fee season. 6 week analysis. Dec 1 fee goes to $4 per sample
  • Keep leaves off of seedling grass
  • Make a compost bin if you don’t have one already

  • Vegetables that can be planted now collards, turnips, beets, snap beans squash broccoli,
  • Pull or spray microstegium soon. It will set seed in a couple of weeks which makes the infestation much worse next year.
  • Control cabbage loopers, cabbage worms, in cole crops with Dipel or Sevin
  • Plant tall fescue NOW.
  • Weed your strawberry beds. Every weed you control now will help in weeding your strawberries next spring
  • Remove fruiting canes from your blackberry patch.
  • Now is great time to take your soil test
  • Avoid pruning. Wait until late November at the earliest.
  • Provide irrigation soon after planting any fall vegetables if rain is not forecast within 3 days of planting.
  • Leaves will be falling before you know it, so go ahead and build a compost bin to hold them.

  • Fall garden planting time is now
  • Garden food safety tip 1: Wash your hands before harvesting your garden.
  • Control weeds before they seed out
  • Garden food safety tip 2: Keep pets and wildlife out of the garden.
  • With recent rains your garden soil maybe too wet to work
  • Garden food safety tip 3: If you use manure, apply it in the fall so it has time to break down.
  • Avoid the rush and start taking your soil samples now!
  • Garden food safety tip 4: Washing produce doesn’t eliminate contamination. Prevention is the key.
  • When going on vacation, have someone harvest your vegetables for you. Let them have the vegetables.

  • Succession Planting keeps the Vegetables supply coming in Veggies to plant now lima beans, snap beans, cucumbers,summer squash.okra,field peas, sweet potatoes, tomatoes
  • Check squash for squash bugs. Rub off egg casings to limit these squash pest.
  • Keep hydrated while working in the garden. Use PPE for Sun Protection.
  • If planning to renovate your lawn  this fall you need a soil sample now to prepare your soil for grass renovation
  • Vegetables may need top dressing if plants are a pale green and you haven’t top dressed them in the last three weeks
  • If you have diseased plants take those plants out of the garden contact Cooperative Extension for ID and control measures.
