TownTalk: 62nd Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry Wednesday, May 13

The 62nd annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry is coming up – make plans to eat in or take out on Wednesday, May 13 at Tony’s Auto on Raleigh Road.

This is the second year at this location, and long-time Henderson Shriner Donald Seifert said the club is grateful for the partnership.

Seifert said, “Tony and his wife Tammy have been really good to us making their space available. As long as we can go there, that certainly would be our location of choice,” he said on Thursday’s segment of TownTalk.

Plates are $12 and will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. But Henderson Shrine Club President Billy Currin shared some friendly advice: “I wouldn’t wait until seven o’clock” to pull up to the drive-thru lane or pull in to eat in at Tony’s 50’s diner-style establishment.

“I’m looking forward to May 13,” Currin said. “The community has always been gracious in supporting us and coming out.”

Last year’s fish fry was a good one – it netted about $10,000 for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Greenville, S.C. Organizers are hopeful this year’s event will be just as good or even better.

Currin said nothing’s ever perfect, but last year’s fundraiser came pretty close.

“Last year was just about perfect, Currin said, who’s got 25 or so fish fry fundraisers under his belt. “Plates were on time – everything went well. We sold the last plate right at 7. It just worked out great.”

Jennifer Ellis has helped coordinate volunteers for at least 16 years and she said a key component is the assembly line, making sure the filled plates – 2 pieces of freshly cooked fish, slaw, potato salad and hush puppies – get to where they’re needed, whether that’s to keep the drive-thru flowing or inside Tony’s for those who want to dine in.

Ellis said, “It takes a lot of people to make this a success – for the children.”

It’s all for the children – children who get care at the Shriner’s Hospital – that volunteers, Shriners and the community come together each year to raise money.

“It warms my heart that everyone can come together for a good cause…our children hold a special place in our hearts,” Ellis said.

Contact Ellis at 252. 213.3685 if you’d like to volunteer to help. She’ll find a spot for you.

Over the years, Shriners, their friends and families have racked up countless volunteer hours to put on more than 60 fish fry fundraisers, which have contributed a cumulative $570,000 to the hospital, Currin said.

Families of Shriner’s Hospital’s patients don’t get a bill for the care their child receives. Neither do they have to pay for transportation, lodging or meals while they are there.

“I think that’s a great thing, especially this day and time,” Currin said. “The families are in a time of need – you’re worried about your child…lost wages. But you have a hospital to provide a service.

“To me, it does my heart well to take off a day from work to volunteer and give to the Shriner’s hospital. I just think it’s a great thing.”

The group also is bringing the calliope out of storage to provide its unique musical sounds to the event.

And there’s one more added bonus this year, thanks to Sanford – ice cream!

Eat-in patrons can purchase a cup of Tony’s famous soft-serve for $1.

WIZS Radio is sponsoring the ice cream extra by purchasing the ingredients, which allows each $1 donation to go directly to the Shriner’s Hospital.

Seifert said Durham Coca-Cola and Hager Rand with Rand Beverages is sponsoring beverages – Coke products, of course – that are available for purchase for eat-in customers, which adds to the net proceeds, too.

There are 20 Shriner’s Hospitals across the U.S. that provide world-class pediatric care regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Seifert said that’s what makes it such a worthwhile cause. “That’s one of the reasons our fish frys have been successful,” he noted. “Because people in our town and in our communities recognize it as a very worthy cause. And we thank them.”

New Location for Tri-County Shrine Club’s Annual Fish Fry

The Tri-County Shrine Club, formerly Henderson Shrine Club, will hold its 56th annual Shriners Fish Fry on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Changing the name to more accurately reflect the members’ residing counties, the Tri-County Shrine Club looks forward to the spring fish fry each year.

Treasurer Donald Seifert, who was interviewed on Tuesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program, said the name of the club is not the only difference this year – the location has also changed.

“Our former fish fry location on Raleigh Road was leased and is no longer available,” said Seifert. “The Shrine Club has been meeting at 210 Industry Drive behind Lowe’s Home Improvement in Henderson for some time now, so we decided to adapt that location to work for this year’s fish fry.”

The fish fry will be drive-through pickup only; no plates will be consumed on the premises. Deliveries will be available for 10 or more plates.

For $8 a ticket, supporters will receive a “generous portion” of fried fish, coleslaw, potato salad and hushpuppies.

As in prior years, proceeds benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children, a fact that Seifert says hasn’t changed throughout the fundraiser’s history.

“We certainly hope we can continue to support those hospitals because they do such great work for children. It’s a wonderful association.”

To purchase a ticket, please call Seifert at (252) 438-8355 or WIZS’ own John Charles Rose at (252) 432-0774. Rose has volunteered to help with deliveries on the day of the event.

Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry A Huge Success!

Despite the rainy weather, the 55th annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry was a huge success. The Shriners raised $10-$12 thousand dollars and sold 2,500+ plates!

WIZS covered the event with live broadcasts throughout the day, interviewing several local people and encouraging the community to come out and support the event aimed at raising funds to support the 22 Shriners hospitals and clinics across the country.

In addition to the usual local supporters, the fish fry brought Shrine Club members from other districts across the state. Bob Hair, with the Burlington Shrine Club, brought his club’s hospital transport van affectionately known as “the roadrunner.”

According to Hair, the roadrunner has traveled many a mile to bring children to the closest Shriner’s hospital in Greenville, SC. “Two Shriners ride in the van to take sick children to the hospital,” said Hair. “We stay with them until they get through it [procedure] and then we bring them back home.”

Hair said his club has a transportation fund set up that pays for the gasoline and for the food of the family and the child for the duration of their visit to the hospital.

Hair himself has been a “roadrunner” for 25 years and has made “hundreds of trips to Greenville, SC.”

He reminded the listening audience they every dollar raised at the event goes to help crippled and burned children by paying for patient care, doctors’ and nurses’ salaries, electric bills, etc.

Potentate Bob Dowen of Raleigh, head of the Amran Shriners that covers a 10-county area, was also on hand at the fish fry to show his support and enjoy a delicious meal.

In speaking on the benefits of fundraisers such as the fish fry, Dowen explained that proceeds go to ensure that all children in need are covered regardless of their families financial standing.

“Children are treated regardless of their ability to pay and parents are never forced to pay anything outside of what insurance covers,” said Dowen.

55th Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry, Wed., May 16

The 55th Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry will be held Wednesday, May 16 in the Vance Square Shopping Center on Raleigh Road in Henderson, across from Supply Line Country Market and M.R. Williams, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Plates are $8 a piece and all proceeds go to support Shriners Hospitals for Children. The event is all-you-can-eat, eat-in or take-out. Delivery is also available for orders of 10 or more.

The group expects to serve a total of 2,500 plates overall, with 800 – 1,000 of those plates delivered by Shriners or volunteers to local businesses.

Volunteers are welcomed and may show up the day of the event to help.

Shriners Ray Fields and Donald Seifert were on “Town Talk” on Monday to provide details about the event. Fields said,  “The fish fry would not be possible or successful without the support of the businesses and people of Vance County.”

The pair reminded the public that this is just as much a positive social event as it is an eating occasion.

Fields informed WIZS listeners that the Shriners currently support 22 hospitals and three burn centers. The money raised from Wednesday’s event will go toward further supporting those efforts.

WIZS will be broadcasting live on location.
