Vick Receives 2021 Optimist Award For Outstanding Service For Work At Vance Animal Services

Chris Vick of Vance County Animal Services has received the 2021 award for outstanding service from the Henderson Optimist Club.

Optimist Club President Tommy Farmer presented the award to Vick on Wednesday at the Animal Services Building on Brodie Road.

Farmer told WIZS News that the COVID-19 pandemic, created the need for the club’s annual  Respect for Law campaign to be conducted differently this year.

The club usually hosts the winners and their families at an awards dinner, but this year, club members are presenting the awards individually.

The various enforcement departments across the county submit nominations for the award, Farmer said. Animal Services Chief Frankie Nobles said he nominated Vick for being “hard-working, dependable (and) dedicated,” and for being “an overall good employee for Vance County.”

Accompanying Farmer for the presentation was Britt Sams, who chairs the Respect for Law committee.

Optimist Club: No Christmas Tree Sale This Year

The Henderson Optimist Club Christmas tree lot has been a fixture on Dabney Drive for many years. But this year, the community will have one less spot to shop for their annual holiday evergreen – the Optimists won’t be in operation.

Club President Tommy Farmer sent a brief statement to WIZS News, citing “logistical ordering issues” as the reason for not having the tree sale.

“It saddens us to know that many of our loyal customers will be looking for their trees elsewhere,” he stated. “We know that the community looks forward to our traditional tree lot and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

“The Local Skinny!” Mar 2; Optimist Club Flag Project Supports Community

The Henderson Optimist Club invites area businesses to fly an American flag to help fund club projects as they display their patriotism in the community.

Thurman Murphy was on “The Local Skinny!” Tuesday and told John C. Rose that the flag project is one of the ways the club funds its various community projects. New subscribers pay an initial fee of $60, with a $30 annual renewal fee.

“We keep the flags and put them out ourselves,” Murphy said. About 35 businesses, most of them in the downtown area, currently participate. This project has been in existence since the late 1960’s, he said, the brainchild of founding club member Ed White. The club replaces the flag or the pole when the need arises, he said.

Club members put up the flag eight times a year – Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day, Murphy said, adding that they sometimes get requests from the Chamber of Commerce or other business associations for the flags to be posted at other special occasions.

The mission of the Henderson Optimist Club is to help the youth in the community, and the club does this through various projects and contests, Murphy noted.

The projects help fund two scholarships awarded to two Vance County students each year. The $1,000 scholarships are renewable for four years. Although the student doesn’t have to attend a school in Vance County, the student must be a resident of Vance County, he explained.

Other annual contests for high school students are the oratorical contest and the essay contest. Local winners advance to the zone level, and from there, district and then national levels, he said. Winners at the district and national levels are awarded scholarship prizes as well.

Murphy said the “Attend and Win,” contest at the eight county elementary schools gives a pizza party to the classroom at each school with the highest quarterly attendance. That contest has been put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he said the project will pick back up as soon as it’s safe to be back in the school buildings.

The local Optimist Club also:

  • sponsors two baseball leagues at the YMCA and the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department;
  • hosts a Christmas party with gifts each year for children at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford;
  • financially supports the Optimist Cottage at the Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw;
  • hosts the “Respect For Law” project each year and names an officer of the year from the Henderson police department, Vance County sheriff’s office, NC Highway Patrol, Henderson and Vance County fire departments and Kerr Lake park rangers.

Tuesday night at 6:00, the Henderson Optimist Club met at the Henderson Country Club and held it’s annual Respect for Law program.

Henderson Police Captain Tony Pendergrass presented the Officer of the Year award to Sgt. Graham Woodlief.  Pendergrass said, “Since January of 2018, through numerous arrest and search warrants, Sgt. Woodlief has seized $28,961 in cash, 10.8 pounds of marijuana, 12,744 dosage units of heroin, 194.7 grams of cocaine, 50.5 illegal pills and 16 firearms.”  Woodlief said, “It was a collective effort,” and praised his fellow officers and co-workers.

Henderson Fire Chief Steve Cordell presented the Henderson Firefighter of the Year award to Senior Firefighter Tyler Coleman.  Cordell said the city was lucky to have Coleman.  Cordell said every time he’s seen Coleman in recent years he’s either doing his job or headed to class.  Cordell said Coleman had learned a lot and earned his certifications and he’d very graciously shared what he’d learned with his peers.

Vance County Sheriff Peter White awarded court bailiff Victor Ward with Deputy of the Year honors.  White said rarely are law enforcement officers thanked like what the Optimist Club does, and he said, “A simple thank you goes a long ways.”  Ward said something White told him had really stuck with him and helped him, and that was to “‘Be kind and be kind and be kind until you can’t be kind anymore.”‘

Vance County Fire Chief Chris Wright spoke passionately about Adam Pegram, the Vance County Firefighter of the Year.  He said Pegram puts his family first and that was something he looked for in firefighters.  Wright said, “My guys have worked together.”  No one said it at the meeting, but firefighters usually do stick together like a family, and they surely have to in the many dangerous circumstances they face.  Fire Captain Adam Pegram, who got his start as a young man in the Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department, said to the audience, “Y’all are my family.  Without y’all, there is no me.”

The North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year is Josh Southerland.  Sgt. Darby Guy said Southerland had removed 128 drunks from the road last year.  Southerland was also the recent recipient of a Mothers Against Drunk Drivers award and became the proud driver of the first stealth patrol cruiser.  Southerland said, “Our leadership and coworkers keep us motivated.”

“The Singing Animal Control Officer,” Chad Olds received the Vance County Animal Control Officer of the Year award from Chief Frankie Nobles.  Olds is the officer seen recently on Facebook singing to animals at the Vance County Animal Shelter.  It’s been viewed more than 15 million times.  Nobles said Olds is there “no matter what, when, how long.  I’ve got a good team.”  Olds spoke of brotherhood, community and family.  He said he understood those things now better than ever.  “Frankie is a good teacher,” he said.

Optimist Tommy Farmer introduced Bryce Fleming as the Kerr Lake Park Ranger of the Year.  Fleming is park superintendent at the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area.  Farmer introduced Fleming as the caretaker of a major resource in our area, and one that attracts a tremendous number of visitors.  Fleming thanked the already mentioned officers and departments for all they do.  He said, “A park ranger blends a lot of what you do.  Everyone of you has helped us, and we thank you.”

Musical entertainment was provided before the presentations by J and J including Jimmy Barrier on bass and vocals, Keith Aiken on the dobro, Mike Watkins and Roger Knox on guitar and Curtis Tyndal on Bass.  Mr. Jerry Delbridge also sang and presented a most lovely poem, from memory, about God forming man.
