Henderson Men’s Shelter to Open Nov. 1; Meals & Donations Needed

100.1 FM ~ 1450 AM ~ WIZS, Your Community Voice ~ Click to LISTEN LOCAL

-Information courtesy Jane King, Community Partners of Hope

The Henderson/Vance Emergency Men’s Shelter opens for the 2020-2021 season on November 1.

Volunteers and staff are busy at work getting the shelter ready to open with extra precautions due to the coronavirus pandemic. The shelter can only house six men at a time, so stays are limited to 14 days (they can return after a week IF there is room).

Unfortunately, volunteers will not be used inside the shelter this year, but meals and donations are still needed. Someone is also needed to pick up meals from restaurants occasionally.

This year, meals must be delivered in take-out boxes so that the food is free from contamination. Eight meals will be needed each night (six men plus supervisors). Many men do not eat pork, so please avoid sending pork products.

If you bring beverages, they will need to be in individual bottles – water, tea, lemonade, etc.

If you want to use a local restaurant, please be sure the food is in individual servings (not a pizza in a large box).

The shelter is located in the basement of First Presbyterian Church in Henderson below the Fellowship Hall. Follow men’s shelter signs from the corner of Chestnut Street and Church Street – park in the alley and someone will come out to your car to get the meals.

You can sign up to bring meals by clicking here. If you need help signing up or if you have additional questions, please call Jane King at (252) 432-9494.

PRAYERS

Please continue to hold the shelter, its guests, its staff, its volunteers and board of directors, and all who face homelessness in your prayers.

Henderson Men’s Shelter, Hope House to Open Under New COVID Guidelines

100.1 FM ~ 1450 AM ~ WIZS, Your Community Voice ~ Click to LISTEN LOCAL

-Information courtesy Jane King, Community Partners of Hope

Community Partners of Hope has had to navigate some new obstacles this year, but with your help, we will continue to offer services to homeless men both in the emergency men’s shelter and in Hope House.

However, there will be some big changes for the upcoming shelter season which are necessary to keep everyone as safe as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.

VOLUNTEERS

We will not be able to use volunteers for supervision this year. Even with the strictest safety guidelines, we need to minimize the number of people who come into contact with our guests at the shelter, so we will depend on a minimum number of paid staff to cover all shifts and provide backup in case someone is not able to work a shift. This puts an added burden on our budget, so it would help greatly if you would consider donating money instead of your time as a volunteer this year.

MAXIMUM OCCUPANCY

The maximum occupancy for the 2020-2021 season will be six men. In order to maintain a minimum safe distance, we cannot house the 10-12 men we have had over the past year. This allows room for an adequate distance between sleeping spaces as well as during meals, showers, etc. To accomplish this we will limit stays to a maximum of 14 days. If a man still needs shelter after a seven-day break, he may return for another 14 days if there is room.

Health guidelines will be strictly enforced and if a man refuses to comply, he will be asked to leave. Where we have tried to be lenient in the past, the health and safety of our residents and staff require us to be very strict this year.

MEALS

We will still be asking people to sign up to bring meals, but in order to prevent the spread of germs, we are asking that volunteers bring eight meals served in take-out trays and/or lunch bags. Individual bottles of water, tea, or juice will be greatly appreciated.   Each man will receive his meal without touching any other person’s food. You can remain in your car when you bring the meal and someone will come out to get the food.

There are a few restaurants that will provide meals occasionally, but we need volunteers to pick those up and deliver to the shelter. If you know of a restaurant to add to our list, please contact me. Breakfast will consist of cereal bars, juice boxes, etc. that can be bagged for the men to take as they leave.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Everyone in the shelter MUST wear a mask over their mouth and nose except when eating, showering, or sleeping. Hand washing and social distancing will be enforced. Anyone who does not comply will be asked to leave.

We have asked the Health Department for guidance on cleaning, and we are exploring additional safeguards including an air handling system to circulate and disinfect the air in the shelter.

HOPE HOUSE

Our resident capacity will be limited to no more than four men. We have three men in Hope House at the moment, and the oversight committee is reviewing applications to accept one new resident. During this pandemic, we believe it safest to have only two men in each bedroom, and we are keeping the single room free in case of a need to quarantine.

The Hope House residents are following safety guidelines and keeping the house sanitized as much as possible.

DONATIONS

Here is a list of the most needed items:

  • Socks – white tube socks – not short socks or dress socks
  • Underwear – boxers and tee-shirts in sizes L, XL, 2X, and 3X
  • Thermal underwear – prefer black waffle weave – sizes L, XL, 2X, and 3X
  • Gloves – waterproof, please – not knitted
  • Shower shoes
  • Hand sanitizer in small bottles that men can carry in their pocket
  • Disposable razors
  • Toothpaste – sample sizes
  • Soap – travel sizes
  • Laundry pods – eliminates the problem of not measuring powder or liquid properly
  • Tall Kitchen Trash Bags (13 Gallon Size)
  • Pine-sol type cleaner – gallon containers
  • Spray shower cleaner (scrubbing bubbles or similar item)
  • Paper Towels
  • Bleach
  • Clorox spray cleaner plus bleach

We cannot accept used clothing, bedding, or other items. New items should be delivered in their original packaging.

Please do not bring donations to the shelter! Needed items can be delivered to WIZS radio station or to the First Presbyterian Church office in Henderson on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Please contact Jane King at (252) 432-9494 to make other arrangements.

Henderson Men’s Shelter Updates; 220 Fundraiser Rescheduled for June

100.1 FM ~ 1450 AM ~ WIZS, Your Community Voice ~ Click to LISTEN LOCAL

220 Fundraiser:

The Community Partners of Hope/Henderson Men’s Shelter’s 220 Seafood fundraiser originally scheduled for April 27 has been rescheduled for Monday, June 29, 2020, in hopes that social distancing will be somewhat relaxed by then.

With timelines related to COVID-19 so uncertain, the organization has decided to hold off on printing and distributing tickets for now. Please contact Jane King at (252) 432-9494 about any tickets that you have received or sold.

More details on ticket sales should be available by late May.

Henderson Men’s Shelter/Hope House Updates:

In the meantime, the shelter did close at the end of March and it is believed that all of the remaining men had somewhere else to go – either back with family or to some other housing.

For the last two weeks, volunteers had to cancel their commitment. The shelter recognizes Darryl Jones, Josh Stokes and William Avery who continued to cover all shifts to be sure the men had a safe place to be.

Hope House has six residents now who are doing their best to practice social distancing in close spaces. Darryl Jones is working with them to be sure the area is being adequately sanitized.

Because some of the men in Hope House are unable to work now, their “shared expense” cost has been waived for at least the month of April and food boxes have been provided. Expenses still remain for utilities, supplies, insurance, salaries, etc.

If you wish to help, you may always mail a tax-deductible check to Community Partners of Hope, Inc, P.O. Box 1791, Henderson, NC 27536.

Henderson Men’s Shelter ‘Running Smoothly’ As Season Comes to a Close

100.1 FM ~ 1450 AM ~ WIZS, Your Community Voice ~ Click to LISTEN LOCAL

WIZS checked in with Jane King, volunteer coordinator for the Henderson Men’s Shelter, to see how shelter staff and the men they serve are faring in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

King reported that the shelter is running smoothly as it nears the closing of its season at the end of March. “Basically, all of our volunteers have asked to be excused, but our paid staff are committed to keeping the shelter open and are making a concerted effort to have the men practice good hygiene and social distancing as much as possible,” King said. “Our meal volunteers have continued to bring food and all seems to be well.”

At this time, King said the shelter is down to four men who are working on having a place to go when the shelter closes later this month. “We also have five men living in Hope House (year-round transitional home) and they are also being advised of safe practices,” explained King.

According to King, continued prayers and monetary donations to help meet payroll and prepare for next year are great ways for the community to support the shelter at this time.

Henderson Men’s Shelter in Need of Volunteers for Winter Season

100.1 FM / 1450 AM WIZS; Local News broadcasts M-F 8am, 12pm, 5pm

-Information courtesy Community Partners of Hope

The Henderson Men’s Shelter needs the community’s help with providing supervision for the shelter for the remainder of the winter season. Our supply of volunteers and partner churches has slowly eroded to the point that we cannot find volunteers to cover all of the nights.

We have a responsibility to provide coverage, even when there are no volunteers, and we need additional monies for unforeseeable occurrences – especially “white flag” days and nights where the temperature falls below 28 degrees.

We are already paying staff for one of the two slots needed for each shift – this has added continuity and much smoother shelter operations. We had hoped to use volunteers for the additional coverage so that we always have two people supervising.

On most nights, one person would be enough if we could guarantee there would be no emergency, but though they are rare, emergencies do happen and we need to be ready to deal with them.

The Board of Directors has decided to approve paying one of our part-time staff members to cover additional nights when we cannot find volunteers. Hopefully, more volunteers will step up and we won’t have to resort to this too often – but frankly, we do not have the funding in our budget for this need.

We are already committed to replacing the failing roof on Hope House and even though much of the material has been donated, we still will have considerable costs.

WE NEED DONATIONS!

Please consider taking a volunteer shift or asking your church to get involved to take a few nights (just MTWTH each week).

We are running a Facebook fundraiser which gives us 100% of the payments received via credit card on a secure platform.

Checks can also be made payable to CPOH and mailed to:

Henderson Men’s Shelter Prepares to Kick Off 2019-2020 Season

100.1 FM / 1450 AM WIZS; Local News broadcasts M-F 8am, 12pm, 5pm

-Information courtesy Community Partners of Hope

On Thursday, October 24, 2019, at 6 p.m. volunteers and staff of the Henderson Men’s Shelter will gather in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church for a brief review and a service of prayer to kick off the 2019-2020 shelter season.

The shelter serves homeless men in the basement of the church from November – March and will officially open for the season on Friday, November 1.

Shelter Cleanup Day

A group will work in the shelter on Tuesday, October 15 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Work involves dusting, sweeping, mopping, folding, stacking, washing and organizing.

Please call Jane at (252) 432-9494 or email cpofhope@gmail.com if you would like to help.

Staff

Changes have been made to the staffing schedule for the new season.

Darryl Jones will be the manager on duty every weeknight during the welcome shift. A volunteer is still needed to work with him to assist with check-in and interact with the men.

Josh Stokes will be the weekend welcome shift supervisor (5 – 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.) A volunteer is still needed to work with him on Saturday and Sunday.

Some regular staff (mostly volunteer) will have primary responsibility for the overnight shift, but volunteers are still needed so that there are always two supervisors on duty.

Shifts Needed

Meals are needed every night of the week, but several groups have already signed up – some claiming several evenings for each of the five months.

Welcome Shift (5 – 10 p.m.) – Mostly need Sunday through Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Most Thursdays and Fridays are already covered.

Overnight Shift – (9 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.) Mostly need Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesday, Friday and Saturdays are mostly covered.

Funding

Per the shelter, “although we try to be extremely frugal, we have ongoing monthly costs for utilities and repairs at Hope House, supplies, insurance, etc. We are still considering a more permanent location for the shelter, but we can’t move forward without significant cash donations. We would also like to be able to pay a few more of the overnight staff.

The Hope House roof will be repaired in January and we have some of the funds needed for that but still need to find more. Huge thanks to Certainteed Roofing for providing the shingles and to Lowes Home Improvement for providing building materials at a significant discount!”

All contributions are tax deductible.

220 Seafood Fundraiser to Benefit Henderson Men’s Shelter, Hope House

Jane King, volunteer coordinator for Community Partners of Hope, Inc. was on Thursday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to discuss the organization’s biggest fundraiser event of the year – a fish fry to be held at 220 Seafood on Monday, April 29, 2019, from 4 until 7 p.m.

The meal includes trout, fries, coleslaw and hushpuppies for $7 per plate. Plates are available for drive-thru style pick up or guests are welcome to eat inside. Additional tickets will be available at the door.

“Several years ago, we broke the record for 220 fundraisers and had over 1,400 dinners served in one night,” King said. “We hope to increase that number this year!”

King is pleased to announce that the organization has a “good number” of volunteers committed to assisting with the fish fry, including a local school group.

“The National Honor Society at Crossroads Christian School has volunteered for several years now. They also help serve meals at the Men’s Shelter. We expect 17 young people to help with this year’s fundraiser.”

Proceeds from the fish fry help fund Community Partners of Hope’s two main projects – the Henderson Men’s Shelter and the Hope House.

In discussing the outcome of the recent winter season at the shelter, King said the organization was pleased with its overall numbers.

“We served 50 men through the winter season, with an average stay of 10 nights. Two moved into Hope House; others were able to find housing or help with housing by being connected to Social Services, Veteran Affairs, Disability Services, etc.”

Currently located in the basement of First Presbyterian Church, King said the long-term goal for the Henderson Men’s Shelter is to find a permanent, independent location.

When asked what it would take to make that happen, King responded honestly, “We need a lot of money. If we find a permanent location, we are going to have to put money into upgrading it to what we need or build a building. There will be ongoing utilities and salaries. Also, I’m afraid we’re coming close to needing a new roof on Hope House; those don’t come cheap.”

Hope House is considered “a step up” in that it allows men from the Henderson Shelter, or other shelters, a place to stay along with an assigned mentor for a small fee. “Most men are working when they move in but may not yet be fully employed. Living in Hope House allows them to save money while working and assists them in finding permanent housing,” King said.

King reported that 40 men have resided in Hope House in the four years that it has been in operation.

Looking even further into the future, King said that she would like to see family shelters in the area. “There are currently men’s shelters and women’s shelters but not somewhere for a family to go.”

To help Community Partners of Hope meet their financial needs, and to feed yourself and your family on Monday evening, please consider supporting the organization’s 220 Seafood fundraiser. 220 Seafood is located at 1812 N. Garnett St. in Henderson.

Community Partners of Hope to Hold 220 Seafood Fundraiser for Men’s Shelter

-Information courtesy Community Partners of Hope

Another season at the Henderson Men’s Shelter is coming to a close this week. Hope House continues to operate on a year-round basis and serves up to seven men at a time.

All of this takes money for staffing, supplies, utilities, repairs and more. We hope we are coming closer to a permanent shelter location, but that will require money for facility upgrades and ongoing expenses.

One of the ways that we raise money is the Spring Fundraiser at 220 Seafood in Henderson, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The fundraiser will be held on Monday, April 29, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 220 Seafood. The meal consists of fried trout, french fries, hushpuppies and slaw. A drink is served for those who eat in the restaurant.

Tickets can be picked up at the office of First Baptist Church (11 a.m. – 2 p.m. MTWT) 205 West Winder Street in Henderson – enter driveway beside playground and use intercom button by the elevator – (252) 438-3172.

Additional plates can be purchased at the door – credit cards not accepted.

FUNDRAISER VOLUNTEERS

We also need lots of folks who are willing to greet, serve, pour drinks, bus tables and more. School or church groups are especially welcome. Food is served from 4 – 7 p.m., so we need volunteers to arrive between 3:30 and 3:45 p.m. if possible for training and/or duty assignments. We work hard, but we have fun – PLEASE JOIN US!

To volunteer, or with questions, please call Jane King at (252) 432-9494.
