TownTalk: Business Spotlight: Henderson Country Club

Now through February, golfers can call the Henderson Country Club to book a tee time and get an up-close look at newly renovated greens and more, all for the low price of $40.

This is the second year the club has offered the special rates – which are in effect now through the end of February.

Golfers can take advantage of the nice, moderate weather and enjoy a round of golf as the club optimizes filling available tee times. Give the club a call at 252.433.7089 to book a tee time.

The HCC was Thursday’s Business Spotlight on TownTalk, and President Joseph Falkner and Membership Chairman Jeff Fleming talked about the many ways that the public can enjoy the grounds and facilities, not just the course, with its newly renovated greens.

Falkner said the new greenskeeper and his staff have done a great job to create championship greens. The weather cooperated when the greens were first installed, so they grew perfectly.

“This is the best the greens have ever rolled and the best the course has ever looked,” he added.

“Ultimately, it’s a community center for people,” Falkner said. “We’ve got a great kitchen staff…and can support hundreds of people at the time” for banquets, private parties and more.

There are plenty of opportunities for the public to enjoy what HCC has to offer, Falkner said, in addition to playing golf, the dining spaces can accommodate small or large groups. Recent upgrades to the banquet area include new chairs and fixtures.

“We are a full-service club,” Fleming reminded. “You have to think beyond golf.” Other amenities include tennis courts, swimming pool, workout area and the stately clubhouse.

Falkner said he sees HCC as a major attraction for families relocating to Henderson, making it a place the whole family can enjoy.

“Every successful and thriving small town has a club similar to ours,” Fleming said, adding that this facility can work as a hub to facilitate business.

The golf course is the location for numerous fundraiser tournaments, including Vance-Granville Community College and the local Chamber of Commerce. Then there’s the annual Invitational tournament and Member-Guest, just to name a few.

Expect to hear about additional tournaments next year, as the board continues to garner more attention for the club and its facilities.

“There are a lot of young business leaders on this board,” Fleming said. “We’ve come back strong.”

TownTalk: McGregor Hall’s Inaugural Golf Tournament Sept. 15

McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center is raising the curtain on another event next month – its inaugural golf tournament fundraiser.

Victoria Huggins, Miss North Carolina 2017, has trod the boards at McGregor Hall on several occasions. She was Belle in 2018 and Ariel last year in productions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.

But this year, she’s taking to the fairways and greens of Henderson Country Club and she invites the community to do the same.

“I miss y’all so much!” she exclaimed during Thursday’s TownTalk. “I’m so excited to be headed back to Henderson – and I need your help!”

The tournament will take place Friday, Sept. 15. Participants will gather at 8 a.m. and there will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

As marketing coordinator, Huggins is one of McGregor Hall’s staunchest supporters. She helps the 501c3 with its social media campaign and has taken on the role as golf tournament organizer.

“It’s no secret that I love McGregor Hall,” Huggins said. And she said she loves the game of golf, so a tournament fundraiser was a good match.

She’s looking for hole sponsors – she had three as of Thursday morning, so there’s an opportunity for 15 more (13 actually, because WIZS is going to take a hole on the front 9 and a hole on the back 9).

Hole sponsorships are $100; register teams of 4 for $400.

Huggins is shooting to have a minimum of 18 teams participate in the tournament. Sign up at www.mcgregorhall.org/golftournament.

There are four ways to support the McGregor Hall golf tournament: be a hole sponsor, register to play or sponsor a team, volunteer and provide branded swag for the golfers’ goodie bags.

Email Huggins at media@mcgregorhall.org to get more information.

Sponsors can be business owners, of course, but sponsors also can honor someone they know who has been in a show at McGregor Hall, she said.

McGregor Hall is a special place for the Henderson community and beyond, Huggins said. Besides being an economic catalyst, she said it’s a place that also gives young people their first taste of theater and performing arts.

For those reasons, and more, Huggins said she is excited to be able to give back to a place that has given her – and the community – so much joy.

“When we come together for a cause, we not only show up but we show off,” she said.

VGCC to hold 33rd benefit golf tournament on May 2

Vance-Granville Community College’s 33rd Annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, presented by Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, will be held at the Henderson Country Club on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. All event proceeds support the mission of the college, the Endowment Fund and student scholarships.

With the support of numerous golfers and sponsors, the annual event has raised more than $750,000 since its inception in 1985. The 2016 tournament alone generated a record-breaking $104,160.

This year’s morning and afternoon rounds will begin with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and at 1 p.m. The afternoon round is sold out, but there are openings in the morning round.

The format is four-person “Captain’s Choice Super Ball.” Golfers can form their own teams of four, or sign up and be put on a team. Teams will be handicapped based on handicaps supplied by each player. Trophies will be awarded for first net, second net and first gross. Other awards will be given for “closest to the pin” and “longest drive.”

A hole-in-one on Hole 9 will be rewarded with a 2017 Cadillac XT5, courtesy of Charles Boyd Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC. A player who hits a hole-in-one (with a $10 donation) on Hole 16 will win $5,000, while another $5,000 will be awarded to the VGCC Endowment Fund.

The cost for one golfer to enter the tournament is $150. In either round, that fee includes greens fees, cart, meals, gift bag and practice balls.

A light breakfast, lunch and dinner (immediately following the afternoon round) will be served in the HCC clubhouse. A silent auction and door prize drawings will be held in conjunction with dinner.

Businesses and individuals can take advantage of sponsorship opportunities at various levels. Businesses may also donate products or premium items featuring the company’s logo to be placed in golfers’ gift bags, or to be given as door prizes.
