Sam Perry Memorial Scholarship Applications Available Now
/by WIZS StaffThe Granville Health System Foundation is accepting applications for the 2024 Sam Perry Memorial Scholarship, which awards $1,000 to a Granville County resident who wants to pursue a career in health care.
Now in its 14th year, the scholarship is named for a physician’s assistant who had a long career with Granville Health System.

The winner will be announced by the end of May 2024, according to information from Lauren Roberson, Granville Health System’s Marketing & Foundation director. This is a one-time scholarship, but individuals may reapply for as many years as they are in school.
Students who have been accepted into a two-year or four-year Allied Health Program at an accredited school with the intention to pursue a career in the healthcare field are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. Programs eligible for this scholarship include clinical laboratory sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiological science, pharmacy, RN, BSN, ADN, LPN, dentistry and related careers, physician assistant and nurse practitioner.
Granville Medical Announces Selection Of Adam McConnell As New CEO
/by WIZS StaffGranville Health System has named Adam McConnell as its new Chief Executive Officer, according to information released earlier this week by GHS Marketing & Foundation Director Lauren B. Roberson.
The board of trustees selected McConnell, who has been the hospital’s chief financial officer for the past five years, following a comprehensive search process, according to information in a press statement.
McConnell said he looks forward to his new role. “I am profoundly grateful for this new responsibility. My commitment remains steadfast to the ideals and objectives that position GHS as a pillar of trust in healthcare for our community. Alongside our passionate team, our focus will be unwavering on patient-centric care, and active community involvement,” McConnell stated.
GHS Board of Trustees Chair David Smith welcomed McConnell. “Adam’s extensive experience within our organization, coupled with his strategic vision for healthcare delivery, made him the clear choice to lead us into the future. We have full confidence that his leadership will enhance our ability to provide top-quality care to our community,” Smith stated.
In his role as CFO, McConnell has brought innovative financial strategies to the forefront, bolstered hospital operations, and consistently championed the pursuit of excellence in Granville County’s Health System. Dr. Natalie Hobdy Joins Granville Primary Care

Granville Health System has announced the addition of a family physician to its medical staff.
Dr. Natalie Hobdy has joined the Granville Primary Care practice, located on the GHS campus in Oxford.
Interim CEO of Granville Health System Adam McConnell welcomed Hobdy to the staff. “Granville Health System consistently draws top-tier professionals like Dr. Hobdy. Her dedication to patient-centered care mirrors our ethos. We aspire to be the go-to primary care provider for Granville County, ever-committed to promoting well-being, accelerating healing and inspiring hope in our communities,” McConnell stated in a press release issued Tuesday.
Hobdy is a board-certified family physician and previously worked at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX.

My training at John Peter Smith in Texas and at Essentia Health in Minnesota has prepared me well for rural practices catering to all ages and stages of life. “The Hospital Compare ratings evaluate crucial facets such as patient experience, safety protocols, care efficiency, and clinical outcomes and are paramount for healthcare institutions nationwide,” according to information from GHS Marketing & Foundation Director Lauren Roberson.

Emergency Department RN Receives DAISY Award For Patient Care
/by WIZS StaffA registered nurse in the emergency department at Granville Health System is the first recipient of the DAISY award, an honor given to healthcare professionals who provide professional, compassionate care to patients.
Mckenzie Porterfield received the award last month, according to information from Granville Health System Marketing and Foundation Director Lauren Roberson.
Porterfield was nominated by a patient, Roberson stated.
“I recently received care in the Emergency Department of Granville Health System for vertigo/nausea and Mckenzie was my nurse,” the nomination read in part. “She was very nice, respectful and helpful, which made my visit at this hospital uneventful. Thank you, Mckenzie, so much for your wonderful care!”
The DAISY Foundation gives the awards as part of its mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care that health professionals provide patients and families every day.
“It is my honor to present our first DAISY Award to Mckenzie,” said Ann Marie Holtzman-Wheeler, chief nursing officer for Granville Health System. “She has demonstrated exceptional nursing care and we are grateful for her commitment to care for our patients in the communities that we serve.”

Harold Sherman Adult Day Center Open House Set For June 22
/by WIZS StaffCaregivers and family members who want to learn more about the Harold Sherman Adult Day Center in Granville County can attend an open house later this month in Oxford.
The open house will be held Wednesday, June 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1038-B College St., Oxford.
The Harold Sherman Adult Day Center provides services for residents of Granville, Vance and Warren counties, according to information from its director, Gail Barnes-Hall. Granville Health System established the adult day center in 1998 to meet the needs of disabled adults and their caregivers.
The purpose of the open house is to provide families and caregivers in the community with information about the adult day services program, Barnes-Hall said in a written statement. During the open house, caregivers will have an opportunity to tour the facility, speak with staff and discuss available funding options.

VGCC Nursing Faculty and Students help Granville Health COVID Vaccine Drive Thru Clinic
/by WIZS StaffNursing students at Vance-Granville Community College had the opportunity to help during recent COVID-19 vaccination events in the area. Dr. Anna Seaman, program head for the Associate Degree in Nursing at VGCC, along with others in the nursing program, helped at the vaccine drive-through at Granville Health Systems last weekend. Senior students got to help administer the vaccines; junior students and VGCC faculty supported in other ways.
Brande McILroy, simulation coordinator for the nursing program at the community college, also participated, according to information from Chris LaRocca in the VGCC communications department. The event took place on Saturday, Jan. 15 and Sunday, Jan. 16.
More than 2,000 people got vaccinated during the two-day event. While senior students actually help administer the shots, other faculty members and junior nursing students provided support in other areas, LaRocca stated, from gathering paperwork and documentation from clients to monitoring patients after they got the shot to make sure they had no adverse reactions.
The faculty and students plan to help with future events at Granville Health as well as other health care facilities in the service area.

This event welcomes and recognizes new employees to the Granville County Public School system and allows them an opportunity to meet local elected officials, as well as business and agency leaders in Granville County.

Granville County Chamber banking, investment, real estate, property management and insurance members are being invited to set up business displays to provide information for the newcomers.
