Granville Wedding And Event Expo Gathers Vendors Under One Roof

The Granville County Convention and Expo Center will transform into a one-stop shopping venue for the upcoming Wedding and Events Expo on Saturday, Mar. 4 .

Angela Allen, Granville County Tourism Development Authority director, said the event will be a perfect opportunity for anyone looking for ideas as they plan special events, from birthday celebrations to weddings.

A variety of vendors will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to talk with prospective clients who may be looking for a venue, photographer, florists and much more. Allen said vendors will be on hand representing event venues, caterers, event rental companies, invitation designers, balloon artists, photographers, makeup professionals, hair stylists, accommodation options, dessert makers, event planners and florists.

Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean up, parking, registration and other tasks that go along with such a big project, Allen said. Granville Tourism Dollars Up 26.9%, Topping $50M For 2021

Visitors to Granville County spent $50 million in 2021, an increase of 26.9 percent from 2020 of more than $13 million. The data comes from an annual study commissioned by Visit North Carolina, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.  “Visitors are truly finding that Granville County is uniquely Carolina,” said Angela Allen, director of the Granville County Tourism Development Authority. “From big events like the NC Hot Sauce Contest & Festival, to the first female, veteran-owned brewery at Tobacco Wood Brewery, or an art gallery that features more than 250 artists at Cedar Creek Gallery, Granville has so much to offer. Visitors are finding that Granville County is a great place for a day trip or a quick getaway weekend that is so close and convenient to the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area but feels like a world away.”

Tourism impact highlights in 2021 for Granville County: 

  • The travel and tourism industry directly employees more than 275 people.
  • Total payroll generated by the tourism industry was $11.6 million.
  • State tax revenue generated totaled $2.3 million through state sales and excise taxes, and taxes on personal and corporate income. About $1.8 million in local taxes were generated from sales and property tax revenue from travel-generated and travel-supported businesses.

 

These statistics come from the “Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties 2021,” which can be accessed at partners.visitnc.com/economic-impact-studies. The study was prepared for Visit North Carolina by Tourism Economics in collaboration with the U.S. Travel Association.  Statewide, visitor spending in 2021 rebounded by 44.9 percent to reach $28.9 billion. Following the devastating pandemic-related losses of 2020, the total fell just short of the record $29.22 spent in 2019. Direct tourism employment increased 10.5 percent to 197,500. “These findings are something that everyone in North Carolina can celebrate,” said Visit NC Director Wit Tuttell.  “They’re a testament to the resilience of our businesses and our residents, and to the enduring appeal of destinations that include everything a traveler might want. The economic well-being of the state and all its communities rises with the pleasures travelers find in the natural beauty of our public spaces, our culinary traditions and innovation, our remarkable towns, and our spirited cities. North Carolina can claim it all.”

 

 

Granville Tourism Mini-Grant Application Period Open Through April 18 For 2022-23

The Granville Tourism Development Authority (GTDA) is now accepting grant applications for the upcoming fiscal year.

The primary purpose of the GTDA’s mini-grant program is to assist Granville County organizations and agencies in the promotion and marketing of events and activities that encourage tourism and create an economic impact from visitor spending. The goal is to help stimulate events/activities that can grow and eventually thrive on their own merit, without direct funding. Any approved funding should be considered as a supplemental resource only.

Applicants eligible for grant funding must be a Granville County-based community group, nonprofit organization, or a municipality or recognized community located within Granville County. For-profit groups cannot apply for grant funding unless the event’s proceeds will go to a community-supported organization.

Projects to be considered should encourage out-of-county visitors, with primary consideration given to those that promote the GTDA’s mission of marketing the area as a travel destination. (The tourism industry’s definition of a “visitor” is an individual trekking outside of 50 miles to attend an event or activity.) Events planned for off-peak times may receive higher priority.

Total funding of any event, project or program will not be greater than 25 percent of the total project budget and will not exceed $5,000. Included with the request can be a one-time artist/entertainment allowance of up to $1,000.

Grants applications will be accepted until April 18, 2022, for inclusion in the upcoming fiscal year (July 2022 through June 2023). The GTDA Board will review applications and will be prepared to make recommendations for approval during their June board meeting. Award recipients will be notified after July 1, 2022, when the new fiscal year begins.

Granville County Survey to Help Determine Tourism Strategies

In an effort to distinguish Granville County in the marketplace, the Tourism Development Authority is conducting market research to develop a branding strategy and consistent message to visitors and residents. The Hughes Marketing Group of Matthews, NC has been retained to facilitate this process and will be collecting surveys from visitors and residents to learn more about the events and locales that attract visitors and have the most appeal to those who live in Granville County.

Surveys will be collected through Oct. 31 and are available online at www.granville-survey.com or through the offices of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce (Oxford and Creedmoor) and the Granville County Administration office at 141 Williamsboro Street in Oxford. An online survey is also available through the Visit Granville NC website at https://www.visitgranvillenc.com/win100.

Those participating in the survey are eligible for prize drawings such as a $100 Visa Gift Card, tickets to Granville Haunt Farm, gift certificates for Cedar Creek Gallery, Uptown 101, Java Dave’s, Owl House Café or Georges Restaurant and a Visit Granville gift bag.

Questions for residents include a ranking of factors that may attract visitors to the area, as well as residential longevity in the county and personal opinions about reasons Granville County is a unique place to live, work and visit.

Butner’s Annual Street Dance and Chicken Pickin’ Sure to Entertain

The Butner-Community Association is making final plans for the 24th Annual Butner Chicken Pickin’!

Butner Street Dance

The festival weekend kicks off with the Butner Street Dance, which will be held on Friday, June 1 from 7 – 10 p.m.

Due to unpredictable weather, this event will held at Solider’s Memorial Gym on 24th Street in Butner.

The band for this year’s street dance is The Konnection Band.

Butner Chicken Pickin’

The Butner Chicken Pickin’ is always held on the first Saturday in June, so mark your calendars for Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.! The day’s event includes day-long live entertainment on two stages, a BBQ chicken cook-off contest, lots of food and craft vendors, kiddie activities and rides, a tractor show and a car show that can’t be beat!

The featured band this year is The Castaways Band, which is a local favorite!

The event will be held rain or shine at Gazebo Park on Central Avenue in Butner

For the safety of others, pets, skateboards and bicycles are not allowed at the event.

TRAC in Granville County Region – WIZS Live Broadcast

Thursday May 18th from 10 am to 2 pm, tourism-related businesses in Granville County and the surrounding region will have an opportunity to work with Visit North Carolina staff to learn about its research, development and marketing services, and discuss best practices in reaching travelers, the media and increasing tourism visitation and spending. Visit North Carolina’s Tourism Resource Assistance Center (TRAC), a community-based training program designed to help small tourism-related businesses, will be held at Cedar Creek Gallery located on 1150 Fleming Road in Creedmoor.  The gallery offers for sale the work of over 200 of America’s most accomplished craftspeople in a unique, relaxing atmosphere.  For more information about the gallery, log onto www.cedarcreekgallery.com.  The event will also feature the Baton Rouge Cuisine Food Truck providing authentic, fresh Cajun & Soul food for sale.

There is no charge to attend TRAC, no reservation is required, and there are no PowerPoint presentations. This is a come-when-you-can/stay-as-long-as-you’d-like event opportunity for all tourism-related businesses to meet one-on-one with program managers to discuss better ways to promote their property or event. TRAC brings Visit North Carolina’s program managers to local communities to discuss the nuts and bolts of working with the organization. This invaluable program is designed to help tourism-related businesses engage more fully with programs offered by Visit North Carolina and its partners.

WIZS will broadcast live from the event from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. for interested citizens and business owners that may not have the opportunity to attend.

Representatives from the EDPNC’s BLNC, N.C. Dept. of Commerce, N.C. Dept. of Natural & Cultural Resources, GotToBe NC Agri-Tourism and NC GreenTravel will also be on hand to discuss services they can provide businesses, including strategic planning, assisting with identifying funding sources and serving as liaisons with other local, state and federal agencies.
