Crime Stoppers Presents Community Awards for Service, Support

Granville County Crime Stoppers recently made awards presentations for community service and support. Due to COVID-19 mass gathering restrictions, the annual recognitions, usually made during the annual Crime Stoppers Banquet in October, were made through personal visits by Crime Stoppers President Frank Sossamon.

Award recipients included:

  • Bobby Wheeler – Jim and Nancy Smith Citizenship Award;
  • CertainTeed – Corporate Partnership Award;
  • The Butner-Creedmoor News – Local Business Partnership Award; and
  • Vickie Boyd – Crime Stoppers Board Member of the Year.

The local Crime Stoppers organization was also the recipient of four state awards (out of six recognitions given) through the North Carolina Crime Stoppers Association:

  • Best Promotional Idea – Eat Out Against Crime 2019;
  • Most Innovative Fundraising Idea – Crime Stoppers Annual Banquet 2019;
  • Productivity Award – Populations of 50,000 to 99,000; and
  • N.C. Coordinator of the Year 2019 – Ricky Cates, Creedmoor Police Department.

Crime Stoppers is comprised of members of the community, law enforcement agencies, the media, and businesses who work together to help solve crimes and make our communities a safer place to live, work and raise a family. Citizens are encouraged, through cash rewards and a promise of confidentiality, to provide information leading to the arrest and indictment of criminals.

Through personal visits to each precinct and law enforcement station, Granville County Crime Stoppers honored the 2020 Law Enforcement Officers of the Year during the month of October, which is Crime Prevention Month.

Nominated by their superiors for outstanding job performance and work ethic, officers recognized represented the Town of Butner, the City of Creedmoor, the Granville County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Oxford, the Town of Stem and the Town of Stovall.

Due to COVID-19 mass gathering restrictions, the plaque presentations, usually held during the annual Crime Stoppers Banquet, were made at each site by Granville County Crime Stoppers President Frank Sossamon.

Law Enforcement Officers of the Year for 2020 included:

  • Andrew Spritzer, Butner Public Safety;
  • Thomas A. Wallace, Creedmoor Police Department;
  • Joshua Coppock, Granville County Sheriff’s Office;
  • Lynn Curl, Oxford Police Department;
  • Jay Long, Stem Police Department; and
  • Steven Hayes, Stovall Police Department.

The purpose of Granville County Crime Stoppers is to help make Granville County a safer place to live, work, and raise a family by assisting law enforcement in the fight against crime.

Crime Stoppers is comprised of members of the community, law enforcement agencies, the media and businesses, working together to help solve crimes. Citizens are encouraged, through cash rewards and a promise of confidentiality, to provide information leading to the arrest and indictment of criminals. Each law enforcement agency in Granville County is an important part of the local Crime Stoppers organization.

Crime Stoppers Seeks Public’s Assistance in ‘Suspicious’ Weary Supply Fire; Reward Doubled

On December 11, 2019, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a structure fire was reported at Weary Supply, located at 9153 Grassy Creek Road in Bullock, NC. Through the course of the investigation, the cause of the fire has been determined to be suspicious, due to evidence collected and submitted to the State Crime Lab for analysis.

As a result of the fire, the structure was a total loss. It is believed that someone has information that would assist in identifying the person(s) involved in this incident.

Granville County Crime Stoppers has authorized the payment of up to $1,000 for information received that would lead to an arrest and conviction. Another individual has also donated an additional $1,000, bringing the total reward to $2,000.

Berea Mini Mart Robbery

Information Sought for Two Persons of Interest in Berea Mini-Mart Robbery

Information about two persons of interest is being requested after a July 13, 2020, robbery of the Berea Mini-Mart, located off Hwy 156 W in Oxford, NC.

During late evening hours, $1,000 was criminally removed from the cash drawer. The Granville County Crime Stoppers Board of Directors has authorized the payment of a reward for information leading to the arrest/indictment of those responsible for this crime.

Crime Stoppers: Catalytic Converters Stolen From Vehicles at Oxford Express Mart

Do you have any information about these crimes?

Sometime between the early morning and late afternoon hours of Friday, October 18, 2019, an unknown person(s) unlawfully went upon the private property of Oxford Express Mart, located off Hwy 158 E, Oxford, and criminally removed catalytic converters from vehicles.

Also, sometime between Wednesday, October 23 and Saturday, October 26, an unknown person(s) unlawfully went upon private property off Old NC Hwy 75 in Stem and criminally removed one homemade tobacco trailer, about 12 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Granville County Crime Stoppers to Host Annual Banquet

Granville County Crime Stoppers will host their Fourth Annual Banquet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The event will be held at the First Baptist Church in Creedmoor to recognize and to show support for local law enforcement officers all across the county. Awards will also be given to businesses and individuals who are instrumental in helping Crime Stoppers achieve their goal of making our communities a safer place to live.

Special guest and keynote speaker will be Superior Court Judge John Dunlowe. The former attorney, who now sits on the bench, has extensive knowledge of the role of law enforcement in the criminal justice system.

This year’s event will be opened by the presentation of colors, courtesy of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard, and the singing of the National Anthem by the chorus of one of Granville County’s Public Schools. The meal, served by local volunteers, will consist of bbq chicken, two sides, bread, dessert and beverages.

Individual tickets are now available, or tables can be reserved for businesses, organizations, churches, agencies or civic clubs.

Granville Co. Crime Stoppers to Host Seminar on Ministry Safety

Granville County Crime Stoppers will host a seminar on Ministry Safety and Security on September 4.

This one-day course, to be held at West Oxford Baptist Church (627 Hillsboro Street), will instruct participants on how to build a security team, how to deal with difficult people and situations and ways to protect people from harm.

The purpose of Granville County Crime Stoppers is to help make Granville County a safer place to live, work, and raise a family by assisting law enforcement in the fight against crime.

The church is a public place and is susceptible to a variety of safety and security situations.

Fees for this seminar include the cost of materials and lunch.

Sometime between Sunday, July 14 and Monday, July 15, 2019, an unknown person(s) unlawfully went upon private property off Antler Way Lane in Creedmoor and removed items from a work truck.

Stolen were one Husqvarna 395XP, one Husqvarna 372XP with 16-20″ bar, one Stihl MS200 and one Stihl MS261 16-20″ bar chainsaws.

Approximately 2 – 4 weeks prior to February 24, 2019, an unknown person or persons unlawfully went upon private property of a residence located off Range Road, Rougemont, NC and criminally removed one (1) Husqvarna 350 chainsaw, (1) Husqvarna 231 chainsaw, (1) Husqvarna 150 backpack leaf blower (with an uppercase (S) painted on it in Black) and (1) Stihl MS 441 M chainsaw from a storage shed.

On March 3, 2019, an unknown person or persons unlawfully went upon the private property of a residence located off Lewis Jones Road, Oxford, NC and criminally removed a TCL Roku 55 inch flat-screen smart television.

Sometime between Monday, February 11 and Sunday, March 3, 2019, an unknown person or persons unlawfully went upon the private property of a residence located off Cornwall Road, Oxford, NC and criminally removed copper from an air conditioner.
