Upcoming Community Resource Festival Shaping Up To Be Largest Yet

With more than 100 vendors already registered, the Community Resource Festival 2025 is shaping up to be the largest resource gathering in two counties, and organizers are eager to provide the community with valuable information and a fun day of networking.

The third annual event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 16 at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. In addition to VGCC, sponsors include Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, Granville County Chamber of Commerce and Huff Consulting, LLC

Michele Walker with Huff Consulting, LLC is one of the volunteer organizers. Interest in the event has been great, she said – so much so that some vendors have been placed on a wait list. If previously registered vendors know they cannot attend, Walker asks that they contact organizers as soon as possible to allow as many vendors as possible to take part.

“Thank you so much for making it happen and breaking records, yet again!” Walker said in a written request to vendors for door prizes and other donations.

Walker asks vendors to share on social media outlets counts as the participation/registration fee, she said. Vendors are asked to “tag” the resource partners to help get the word out to as many people as possible.

Facebook users can add “Shelli Walker” to their tags for verification as well. Walker said she will accept all “follow” requests and she will be showcasing random vendors as a way to further promote the event’s activities and participants.

“Again, we can’t thank you enough for being a part of this Community Resource Festival and we hope you all have an amazing time yourselves! Network, Network, Network!” Walker said.

This year, vendors are eligible to win door prizes, she said. Vendors who are donating prizes are asked to inform organizers no later than Monday, Apr. 7 of the type and quantity of door prizes they’ll be providing.

There will be a table by the entrance to the Civic Center to drop donated items on the day of the event. That’s also where the winners will be announced. Previous door prizes have been gift cards, gift baskets, books and donated services.

Granville Chamber Names Charles Currin John Penn Citizen Of The Year

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce named Charles Currin as John Penn Citizen of the Year, capping an evening of celebration during its 83rd annual membership meeting and banquet Monday, Mar. 10.

Currin was recognized for his servant leadership and for giving selfless service to his community. In remarks leading up to the announcement, Rev. Joe Don Cooper said Currin, a lifelong Granville County resident, has dedicated himself to helping others throughout his life. From solving electrical issues, lending his craftsmanship, or simply by being the first  to show up when someone is in need, Currin exemplifies what it means to be a servant leader. His volunteer efforts stretch far beyond the county—he played a key role in disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Matthew, spending nearly a year helping rebuild communities in hard-hit Tarboro. Locally, he is an integral part of the Oxford Lions Club, where his contributions have kept fundraising efforts thriving for more than a decade. His work at Oxford Baptist Church, where he has served in multiple leadership roles, further demonstrates his unwavering commitment to service.

Described by friends and colleagues as “a man of action,” Currin never seeks recognition but always  answers the call to serve. Whether constructing wheelchair ramps for those in need, organizing community fundraisers, or even sharing produce from his garden with neighbors, his generosity knows no bounds. His impact is felt not only in the projects he leads but in the countless lives he has touched with his kindness, humor and willingness to give.

In addition to honoring Currin, the Chamber also recognized George’s Oxford Village Family Restaurant as the Small Business of the Year. A cornerstone of the community, George’s has built a reputation for excellence in customer service and hospitality, serving Granville County for years with dedication and heart.

The evening also showcased the Chamber’s commitment to education. Serenity Cameron, one of the Chamber’s four 2024-2025 Student Spotlight winners, was awarded a scholarship from the Chamber’s Education Committee in recognition of her academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to her community. The Granville County Chamber of Commerce extends its deepest gratitude to its sponsors, attendees and all those who continue to support its mission of fostering economic growth, leadership and  community engagement.

TownTalk: Resource Fair At VGCC April 27

Organizers for an upcoming community resource fair are pleased with how planning is going so far, and they are predicting a win-win situation for all involved – for those who provide resources and for those who are seeking information.

Huff Consulting of Oxford, along with partners Vance-Granville Community College and the Henderson-Vance and Granville County Chambers of Commerce have been planning for months.

Michele Walker, Huff Consulting’s sales and account manager, said there are 65 vendors – nonprofits, for-profit companies, churches and more – lined up to participate in the April 27 event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the VGCC Civic Center on the Main Campus in Henderson.

“We’re very fortunate to have the community coming together for this,” Walker said on TownTalk.

Huff Consulting is a recruiting firm that works with a wide range of employees – from day laborers to corporate executives, Walker said, adding that her company has recognized the struggles that face many in the community. “Everybody has a need,” she said. And this resource festival is a way to bridge the gap between available resources and the folks who are looking for them.

Sandra Wilkerson, president of the Henderson-Vance Chamber, said this coordinated effort across county lines fits perfectly with the local Chamber’s 2023 theme “Year of Collaboration.”

The resource fair participants not only will be able to provide information to attendees, but they’ll also have the chance to build collaborations among themselves.

Having so many different segments of the community and region under one roof for the day is sure to create connections, said Lauren Roberson, director of the Granville County Chamber.

“We’re super excited to be a part of it and help in any way we can,” Roberson said.

In addition to sharing information with the community, Roberson said another goal is to shine a light on all the opportunities within the whole Kerr-Tar region, which includes Vance, Granville, Warren, Franklin and Person counties.

“You’re going to get way more done collaborating than working against each other,” she said. “We’re going to succeed by all working together.”

If people can live and work in the same area, that means there’s a greater chance that they’ll spend more time – and dollars – in that same area.

“We want to keep people in the Kerr-Tar region,” Roberson noted.

Don’t fret if you’re interested in coming out to the festival but have young children in tow – VGCC Public Information Officer Courtney Cissel said you’re in luck: VGCC’s Science Department is having an event that day as part of the NC Science Festival. There will be a Kid’s Corner where children can “come in and have fun with science,” Cissel noted.
