Joint Commissioners, School Board Meeting Cancelled; Commissioners Still On For Nov. 15 at 7 P.M.

The joint meeting of the Granville County Board of Commissioners and the Granville Board of Education, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 15, 2021 at 2 p.m., has been cancelled, according to information received from Debra Weary, clerk to the board of commissioners.

The commissioners will meet on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. for the regular scheduled meeting.

 The commissioners meet at the Granville Expo & Convention Center, 4185 Highway 15, Oxford.

The district boundary map will be on the agenda for consideration at the Nov. 15 meeting.

Granville School Board To Meet Sept. 13

The Granville County Board of Education will meet for a regular board meeting on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021 at 6 p.m. at the Mary Potter Center of Education, 200 Taylor Street, Oxford. The The livestream link is https://live.myvrspot.com/st?cid=MDhkZj.

The Board also will meet in closed session in accordance with N.C. General Statute 143.318.11 (a)(6), 143-318.11 (a)(3), 143.318.11 (a)(5) and Section 115C-321 for Personnel, and Attorney/Client Privilege.

Public comments for this meeting can be made  in one of three ways:

  • In person at the board meeting
  • In writing by placing comments in a box that will be located outside of the board room at the Mary Potter Center of Education from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • In writing by using the following link: https://tinyurl.com/y37evl6zComments made using the link must be submitted between the hours of `12 noon and 4 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2021.

A copy will be distributed to the board of education members.  A maximum of 30 minutes in total will be allotted for public comment.

Members of the public wishing to attend the meeting will be required to wear face coverings and cooperate with social distancing requirements. There will be limited seating available.

The Granville County Board of Education will hold a special called meeting on Monday, November 16, 2020, at 4:30 p.m., at the Mary Potter Center of Education, 200 Taylor Street, Oxford.

The purpose of the meeting will be to hold a closed session pursuant to G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1), (3), and (5) to consult with the Board’s attorney, preserve the attorney-client privilege and consider personnel information that is confidential under G.S. 115C-321.

Following the closed session, the Board may take action in an open session as needed to implement any decisions made during the closed session.

The Granville County Board of Education will meet for a work session on Monday, October 19, 2020, at 4 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is (1) to interview a candidate for a vacant Board seat; (2) to receive information from staff regarding School Improvement Plans; (3) to discuss Remote Learning Centers;
(4) to receive information concerning the sign request for South Granville High School.

In addition, the Board will meet in closed session pursuant to G.C. 143-318.11(a)(1) and (3) to consult with the Board attorney.

Individuals wishing to participate in public comment may do so in person. Those wishing to speak must provide their name and topic on a sign-up sheet to be posted in front of the Mary Potter Center for Education from 5-6 p.m. on October 5. Comments will be received by the board in the order of sign up and will be limited to no more than five minutes per person. Board Policy 2310 allows for 30 minutes of public comment.

Granville Board of Education Accepting Applications for Vacant District 3 Seat

The Granville County Board of Education will continue with six members until a replacement for District 3 is appointed. Per Policy 2115 – Unexpired Term Fulfillment, the Granville County Board of Education will proceed with the process for filling the District 3 seat made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Rob Rivers effective September 30, 2020.

It is the intent of the Board to identify and appoint a suitable candidate for this position using the process outlined below, with the ultimate goal of serving the students of Granville County Public Schools.

Interested candidates should review the “Duties of the Board” guidelines issued by the NC School Board Association, which may be found at the NCSBA website:  https://www.ncsba.org/news-resources/board-member-knowledge-base/duties-of-the-board/

Candidates should submit a letter of interest, a C.V. or resume, and three letters of recommendation to Ms. Lynn Henderson, by the close of business, September 30, 2020. These documents should provide information that highlights the candidate’s ability and experiences related to education and service to children.

All candidates must reside in District 3 in order to be considered for this position. Proof of residency will be required. District 3 map and information may be found at the Granville County website:  https://www.granvillecounty.org/government/county-commissioners/district-map/

During its regular scheduled meeting on October 5, 2020, the Board will review the documents submitted by each candidate and vote to issue invitations to those the Board wishes to interview.

During a special called meeting to be scheduled in October 2020, the Board will interview candidates (the Board will use a list of questions asked of each candidate, chosen at the beginning of the meeting).

At its regular scheduled meeting on November 2, 2020, the Board will vote on who will fill the unexpired term of District 3. Interviews and vote will take place in Open Session.

At a date to be determined, the chosen candidate will take the oath of office.

NOTE: If no suitable candidates are selected, the above process will be repeated as necessary, with new dates selected, until the position is filled.

The Board of Education will also hold a special meeting on Monday, August 3, at 5 p.m., prior to the regular Board meeting.

The purpose of the special meeting will be to meet in Closed Session under G.S. 143-318.11(a)(1), (a)(3) and (a)(6) to prevent the disclosure of confidential personnel information and consult with the Board’s attorney.

Due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, this meeting will take place electronically. The Board will convene in open session at 6 p.m. for its regular meeting.
