Online Meeting May 19 To Talk About Business Recovery Grants

The N.C. Department of Revenue has scheduled an online information session next week to help businesses adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic apply for Business Recovery Grant money.

The session will be held Thursday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to noon and is open to anyone interested in learning more about the grant’s Phase 2, according to Sheri Jones, VGCC Small Business Center Director. “The state is eager to distribute these funds to eligible businesses so I would encourage anyone who was in business during the pandemic to take a look at the criteria and apply – it is much broader and covers more business types in this phase, Jones said.

The deadline to apply is June 1.

The N.C. General Assembly passed the legislation and Gov. Roy Cooper signed it into law in March. The BRG issues awards of up to $500,000 to eligible North Carolina businesses that suffered substantial economic loss during the pandemic.
Two types of grants are available through the program:

  • A hospitality grant is available to an eligible arts, entertainment or recreation business,
    as well as an eligible accommodation or food service business such as a hotel, restaurant or bar (NAICS code 71 and 72).
  • A reimbursement grant is available to an eligible business not classified in NAICS Code
    71 and 72.

For Phase 2, the law was changed to make more businesses eligible for a grant. A business that received other COVID-19 relief may now be eligible for a grant in Phase 2.

Reserve Your Place Today For Rescheduled Granville Chamber Banquet

The deadline to reserve tickets for the upcoming Granville County Chamber of Commerce banquet is fast approaching – members have through Friday, Mar. 18 to register to attend, according to information from Chamber Director Lauren Bennett.

The banquet is scheduled for Monday, Mar. 28 at 6 p.m.  at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. The speaker is UNC basketball legend Phil Ford.

The Chamber also is accepting nominations for 2021 Small Business of the Year.

Leadership Granville Class Sponsoring Two Community Events – Blood Drives And Collection For Two Children’s Homes

The 2021-22 Leadership Granville class is sponsoring two events as its class project and challenges all previous graduates of the program to participate.

Two blood drives are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22 from noon until 4:30 p.m., according to information from Granville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lauren Roberson.

One blood drive will be held in Oxford at the Public Works Building, 127 Penn Ave. The second blood drive will be at Butner Town Hall, 415 Central Ave.

Blood donations have suffered during the pandemic and the Red Cross says the national blood supply is critically low.

A second event is collecting essential items to benefit the children at Central Children’s Home and the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford.

There are nine donation locations throughout the county where residents can drop off items now until Feb. 22.

Because of COVID-19 safety protocols, only new, unused items are being collected and include:

  • Shampoo and hair conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • lip balm
  • twin size bed linens, comforters and pillows
  • socks, shoes, boots, coats, knit caps, gloves
  • bicycles
  • books
  • toys, games, art supplies
  • flashlights
  • power strips

John Penn Citizen Of The Year Nominations Open; Due To Chamber By Jan. 4, 2022

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce has opened nominations for the annual John Penn Citizen of the Year award, given to a local citizen for outstanding service to the community.

John Penn was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and he lived in Granville County and was elected to the Continental Congress in 1775.

Chamber members are invited to nominate individuals who have contributed to the local community. According to the nomination form, the nominee’s employment may be related to the individual’s accomplishments, but they should be separate and apart from their work duties.

Nominations are due to the Chamber office no later than Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022. A committee will review all applications and the winner will be announced at the annual Chamber banquet.

The nomination should contain evidence of the nominee’s positive impact on the community and should contain the areas that the nominee is active – town, county, church, civic group, schools, recreation – as well as any specific action and involvement that is directly related to the nomination.

Butner’s Polk Correctional Facility Gets New Name – Now Granville Correctional Institution

The former Polk Correctional Institution in Butner has been officially re-named Granville Correctional Institution on Monday, Oct. 4. Warden Johnny Hawkins cut the ribbon to mark the occasion, which was held at Gazebo Park in Butner. Representatives of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce were on hand with other officials to witness the name change ceremony.

The Butner facility opened in 1997 to replace the Polk Youth Center in Raleigh. Originally designed to house youthful offenders between the ages of 18 and 21, it evolved to become a detention facility for those between 19 and 25.

8th Annual Granville Chamber Golf Tournament Set For Sept. 21; Moves To Kerr Lake Country Club

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce has announced that its 8th annual golf tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, September 21, 2021. This year’s tournament will be held at Kerr Lake Country Club.

The club, located at 600 Hedrick Drive, Henderson, is a new member of the Granville Chamber.

Registration begins at noon and a box lunch will be provided, according to information from Executive Director Lauren Bennett Roberson. The shotgun start will be at 1 p.m.

Snacks and beverages will be included during play and there will be various contests throughout the day, including a 50/50 raffle, longest drive, closest to the pin challenge and a hole-in-one shootout.

Corporate sponsorships are $450 and include a 4-player team. Individual spots are $100, as are hole sponsors.

Granville Chamber Announces Roberson As New Executive Director

Vance County native Lauren Bennett Roberson has been named the new executive director of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce. Roberson will begin her job on Monday, July 12, according to a press release.

The Chamber’s board of directors made the announcement on Thursday. Roberson is a 2012 graduate of NC State University and has experience in working in a family business, as well as with marketing and social media, the press release stated.

In accepting the position, Roberson told the board she looks forward to working in the community.  “The chamber has and will continue to be a vital part of the county by advocating for our members and shining a spotlight on this thriving community,” Roberson said. “I love Granville County and cannot wait to meet with and show our members and potential members what the Chamber has to offer them.”

The statement from the chamber board said “she brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to the position as well as an innovative spirit that will serve as a basis for growing and supporting out membership.”

Roberson and husband Colin are members of Island Creek Baptist Church in Vance County. They have one daughter, Everly.

Longtime director Ginnie Currin retired in late 2020, after serving as director since 1997. The chamber board statement said it looks forward to Roberson continuing the work begun under Currin’s leadership.

Granville Chamber Hosting 7th Annual Golf Tournament Sept. 29

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 7th Annual Golf Tournament Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at Chamber member Henderson Country Club, 300 Country Club Drive, Henderson.

Both the Chamber and the Henderson Country Club are committed to offering a safe and enjoyable play environment. Thus, there will be a morning and an afternoon round so that a one golfer per golf cart policy may be adhered to during the tournament. There will be eight teams playing in the morning and eight teams playing in the afternoon. Masks and social distancing will be practiced.

Registration for the morning round will begin at 8 a.m. with a boxed lunch provided (at the conclusion of the round completion). Tee time for the morning round will be at 8:30 a.m. Two teams of four players will begin on the first and tenth holes. Twelve (12) minutes later, at 8:42 a.m., a second group will begin on the first and tenth holes, continuing every 12 minutes until all morning teams have begun.

A boxed lunch will be provided for those playing in the afternoon round upon their arrival. The afternoon round will begin at 1:30 p.m., following the same start instructions as the morning round – two teams of four players will begin on the first and tenth holes, four players will begin off the front, and four players will begin off the back. Twelve (12) minutes later, the second group will begin with other groups following the same procedure.

Corporate sponsorships of $450 offer a hole sponsorship and a four-man team. Hole sponsors are $100, and individual players pay $100 to play. All players receive 18 holes of golf w/cart, boxed lunch and concessions. Mulligans and tee busters will be $10 per player.

There will be contests for a 50/50 raffle, closest to the pin challenge, longest drive and hole-in-one shootout. Prizes and participant goodie bags are being provided by local Chamber members.

Volunteers are needed throughout the morning and afternoon of September 29, beginning at 8 a.m., to assist with registration and driving snack/beverage carts. Anyone who is available to volunteer from 8 a.m. until noon and/or 1 until 4:30 p.m. for an hour or two will be appreciated.

Come enjoy the afternoon with golfers and other volunteers for this, the Chamber’ seventh annual golf event.
